Good Characters and Bad

So, I liked Holloway, David, Shaw, Vickers, Weyalnd and Janek. Broadly speaking - because of the actors that portrayed them - they were enjoyable characters regardless of any plot issues/character moments that could have been rounded off better imho. Now the side characters are a different story: I did like Ravel and Chance, I just wish they had more to do. I did like their friendship and their relationship to Captain Janek. I thought Chance reminded me very much of a young Stanley Tucci. Milburn seemed to have been the dumbest biologist going. Surely he should have known better than anyone else to treat new lifeforms ( i.e. the Cobralien ) with extreme caution. I really disliked Fifield. He was a miserable so-and-so ( much like the actor who portrayed him it seems - judging from the London movie premiere interviews ), and extremely unpleasant. He's in it just for the money. I 'm sure Weyland or Vickers could have hired someone more competent than him. Wasn't there anyone more qualified on the entire Earth? He loves rocks yet he is unable to discern between a natural and modified rock edifice. If he'd dispatched his puppies to do an external survey before they all ventured into the unknown, he would have realised there's clearly a artificial carved face atop the pyramid. I was really glad when he bought the farm. The actress who played Ford sucked. Hre delivery of lines was entirely wooden. Anyone else, I've just forgotten.

David is the only character I remember. He's pretty cool by a Fassbender that's great as usual. The rest of the characters contribute nothing.

I would much rather have seen more of David for sure. One of my friends speculated, what if ALL the crew-members ( except for Weyland ) had been androids - but except for David, they just did not know it. Or even, what if all the crew members were different models of David - they would have done a darn sight better job than some of the human crew-members. And THAT would have been enough of a motivation for the Space Jockey to go nuts at the end - that humans have reached a point where they created and sent out their own creations to contact the 'gods'. In essence, 'We are the gods now' as Weyland stated in the TED Lecture.

There was nothing truly scientific about the scientists, the lack of impulse control made me know that there was no true story to be told, but the needed a way to kill people. Like: David Janek, Chance and Ravel Shaw (towards then end) the awaken Space Jockey (not much their design, but the aggression) the get away vehicle at the end (priceless) Like seeing the demise of: Holloway Milburn (most definitely) Fifefield (shody character, but he was solely on this mission as a hired hand)

I found the Captain too comic-strippy. Wooden. Macho. He'd have been better in Alien Ressurection. I actually enjoyed Fifield - he injected some aggressive energy into things. Less passive. David was brilliant obviously and after 2 viewings I love - and sympathise with Shaw more and more. John alienage11.com

I find it ironic that everyone raves about Michael Fassbender's performance as David, a character that was required to show no emotion whatsoever... No happiness, no sadness, no excitement, no anger, no remorse, ect... all he had to do was walk around and remember his lines. And he gave the best performance! lol

I just felt the movie needed longer you know like 30 mins plus to give us some more depth with Characters.... Yes the Mechanics, and Mercs was not main Characters and even Ford, Chance and Ravel..... I think Janek was good apart from the Cheesy scene were he was more bothered about flirting with Vickers rather than look out for and get to the bottom of any glitches with the Scanners..... this was out of Character for a Captain who would latter lay his life down to save Earth.... Vickers i feel she needed more time and depth but i guess she was making two movies at a time, the same can be said for Weyland and again he was making Lock Down around the same time. With Vickers again that cheesy moment with Janek was against her Character this was typical Lindelof writting for you... What should have been said was.... Janek..... "are you a robot" Vickers "well i am off to bed now, and i guess you will never find out" Not "come to my room and find out" I felt Shaw did well, the movie had some plot holes that concerned Shaw, Vickers, David and Weyland and Shaws C-Section... For me David was good and Holloway was a suprise....

Like(for the most part): David Shaw Vickers Dislike(for the most part): All others :/ Why did they use Guy Pearce in make-up to represent an old man? I really dont understand why they did that. It just doesnt work IMO. I could kind of understand if they were going to show Weyland when he was younger, but even then they couldve just used an old man who looks similar to Guy Pearce.

@Big Dave, Just seen a video interview where Ridley said the first cut of the movie was about 2 hrs and 27 mins, so they've cut the movie down to about two hours. I definitely think ( hope ) half an hour more could have been spent fleshing out a few more character moments, and plot points.

@Why Don't You Freeze Him?, I agree. I also think they could have used a 'Benjamin Button' type effect or Skinny Steve Rogers Effect from 'Captain America', to make Weyland's body look more frail. He looked too 'buff' in the body to convince as a extremely old man. Considering the TED Lecture is not in the film, nor is Weyland de-aged in the movie, seems a bit of a wasted opportunity to cast Guy Pearce ( as good an actor though he is ).

Ugh.....I hope we get a seamless longer cut of the movie on blu-ray at some point. I totally get why the cocoon scene was deleted from the theatrical cut of "Alien," but any movie is really only a ride the first time you see it. Dallas begging to die is pretty gut-wrenching stuff and the entire tableau conveys a lot of information, visually. 27 minutes, is a lot of footage.

I've just seen it second time, and noticed a bit more, and mellowed slightly from the shock of the change from the original feel to the Alien universe to this 'it's all connected mythology crock' which still sticks in my craw, but I'm a bit more ready to judge this on it's own merit. Like : Vickers - I think she is actually well presented, and gets a raw deal as a character. The palpable anger at being out of the loop of her dads ideas is really put across in parts where she doesn't even speak (like listening to her Dad praise David) and talk about who's in charge. David - interesting, and will certainly prove complicated in the sequel, paired with Shaw who now KNOWS that David killed Holloway. Revel and Chance - there for comic effect mainly but likeable. Janek - brave, not up in the clouds, and cares for the passengers and crew, the first to notice Milbunr anf Fifield didn't come back - but really should have spotted it well before (shares blame with Shaw and Holloway on that one) atribute two major bloopers to him. Warmed to : Shaw - thought she started off very flawed. I mean, the naivety sure, but also, the lack of command, despite being given it. She lets the BIOLOGIST leave when they find a BIOLOGICAL specimen... and she is so meek when David starts messing with control panels, and she takes no responsibility for getting her expedition back safe from the dig, pays no attention to somebody bagging things without telling her (a big bag with an urn in it FFS!) Even when being scanned, she is politely ASKING David to let her see a scan of her own body, far too meek given what's going on. Ludicrous devotion to her cross, (substitute for her dead parents) to the point where, on the brink of a mission to the home world of the space jockeys, and with 3 dead bodies around her, and dismembered David, her first question is "Where's my cross". Likewise her sign off. She's been through a nightmare and still sounds like someone imagining unicorns. Only that she turned out to be strangely tough did I warm to her. I don't think Shaw is going to be the main character, I think it will be David for the pinnochio idea, with Shaw there to remind us of the 'divine origin' stuff. barely registered Dr. Forde - wooden Jackson - likes to be armed, still gets beaten to death by unarmed opponent. Dislike : Holloway. What does Shaw see in this jerk? Company on long adventures looking at old archeological digs, and a buff body? He's a d-bag. Rude to David from the start and gets all sorry assed about the gods not being home, despite there never being anything living at his previous digs and being happy at clues. Gets drunk to drown his 'abandonment'. Fifield - unpleasant and becomes dumb as a tree when it suits the plot Milburn - unwise and becomes dumb as a tree when it suits the plot.
