How did David know.... (spoilers-inside)

Hi folks. Long time lurker, first time poster. Having seen the film (and been woefully disappointed) I wanted to ask a question that I haven't seen discussed yet: How did David know that Shaw's foetus was "about 3 months" old? Fair enough if it had been human he could make that assumption, but seeing as it was not, how could he tell the age? Furthermore, why did Shaw automatically assume it was something to do with the fact she had been intimate with Holloway the previous day? Couldn't she have become pregnant on Earth three months prior to going into hyper sleep? Couldn't the doctors who told her she was infertile have been wrong? I'm assuming that she had been romantically involved with Holloway prior to the intimacy on the ship. Any ideas?

If you've watched Prometheus then you know in the first 5 mintues the black goo alters DNA and if it can do that, altering a sterile body in order to conceive is childsplay.....no mystery

It was three months old in terms of size..... And she was infertile previous to being placed in hypersleep therefore she knew that the foetus was "alien" as in not natural rather than knowing it was a squid/ first facehugger beast

There are cases of women who were told they were sterile conceiving because doctors made an error. I thought that point was clear in the OP. As for the 3 months= size of foetus, thanks, That clear things up.

Dude, the whole story takes place on Fraking Christmas. Miracles happen on that day. As i sayed in one of my other posts: this pro-religious motives shine brighter than the bald pate of Bruce Willis on a sunny day.

As I said in another post- Both my daughters were born under the same circumstances without any fertility drugs or anything else. My wife was told she couldn't have children and had two separate healthy pregnancies. The realistic question should be whether Shaw was ALREADY pregnant when she became "infected".

Aintnozeno, that would have made for a much more horrific scenario. Imagine looking forward to becoming a parent only to discover your child has been corrupted by alien goo and turned into a monster? That would truly horrify any parent and would have had more impact. Great idea!

Noomi did say the medpod was "every woman's worst nightmare"... Of course, if you've seen what women go through just at a checkup... Jeez! I'm a BIG chicken compared to them! And yes, that would be a terrible realization Corporalhiccups- even for both parents. Unless Dad was burnt up on another planet or something. Hehe

It was still really rushed however. I think in any normal situation, the physiological implications could have been made in to an entire film in some instances This was a very cut and shut case. "let me see it" "no" BANG there it is

As posted above David probably guessed three months from the size. And while it is true that some people could get pregnant after being told they were infertile, you don't think they had check ups done before they were allowed on to a trillion dollar mission and put into stasis? I would guess that with the technology they have at that point they would have noticed she was pregnant before they left on the mission just from the health tests alone. So she knew she was not pregnant before going to sleep and now she is supposedly three months pregnant with a "non traditional fetus." yes it is a big mystery why she thought it could have something to do with the infected person she had sex with.

vinff7 is right on the money. She wasn't infected, she was impregnated with "infected" sperm. Infected sperm with Alien DNA, of course. They sure do grow quickly.
