Big Things have Small Beginnings

One of my favourite lines! Any thoughts behind its true meaning? I think it spans many different meanings, but in the context of the black goo - had David calculated what it does? Evolve life from smaller things into larger creatures? I think so :)

Spuppet: no...not at all. My thoughts were set squarely on those whom serve to bash a film relentless and when you think about it, irrationally. (also not directed, but in general terms) You didn't like the movie? Awesome. No need to come here and piss all over the place like a puerile, prattling bitch about it either, if you don't agree with someone who genuinely liked the film. It's called a life. Get one. But of course, everyone is balls-deep in awesomesauce when hiding behind a screen name on the intarweb. And no, the irony of that statement is not lost on me, but I am being honest. VVV Corporal Hiccups, no. VVVV

@Goddamn Tropics in here, Yeah, I feel the same way. I think he calculated much more than we're let on to know. I really love that part of the film because so much can be interpreted from such a small line ;) They camera angle and lighting it so awesome as well. I think the whole film had the same feel to that one scene, and that's what IMO made it so good! Also, @paparhino you weren't directing that at me were you? I think the film was great, and I appreciate films will always be a matter of subjectivity - I was merely asking some people where their massive disappointment towards the film spawned from.

@ spuppet : You didn't really get a proper response to your question did you!!? I think this is a key moment/ line too Was David testing the goo as Weyland's instructions, or for himself, as he had no care for what would happened to Holloway? Holloway was also mean to David from the Start Perhaps he had calculated that it would react to Human DNA from his findings?

Paparhino, I apologise if I came across as condescending, it was never my intent, and I'll admit that I only created a log in account today. The reason that I created an account was because I feel so strongly about the film. I have been on this site for months but have never felt the need to post before. I have no agenda, I can assure you. I also don't have a problem with Lindelof. Some of the character development in lost was excellent and this is why I am so confused ad upset about the film that he and sir Ridley have served up. I honestly hope you enjoy the film. As you say everyone is entitled to their opinion, I just wish I could see a positive side to it. Having said that, I'm considering going to see it again tomorrow to see if I can salvage anything from it.

For me, one of the biggest issues was a lack of character development which arose from the fact that we go from discovering cave paintings in Scotland to being on the Prometheus in a matter of seconds. I didn't believe in the characters or care when any of them died. There are other issues with the film but you asked me not to go into detail so I'll end here unless you want more info. I just came out of it feeling empty. The visuals were great and fassbender's acting was superb. But that's as positive as I can be :(

There's no need to get snippy or upset, and everyone is entitled to their opinion on the film, it just seems a proliferance of people going waaaaaay way out of their way these past 6 days to be total condescending dicks about their views on the film. The endless Damon bashing and derogatory remarks about Ridley are very telling of the character of these people. And as the mods have said, and I resound, the log-on dates of these new posters almost reeks of a bait squad trying to spread negativity for no other reason than to get off on it or something. News flash: all the negative reviews are not going to taint my movie going experience, as I have the ability to inform my own opinions and take all others as the subjective views that they are. I won't be condescending in return, but I do find it sad that some (not all mind you) would come here expressly with the intent of slander and the like. Pathetic really. Trolls of the highest order.

I think it means that big things (the awesome original Alien film) have small beginnings (the pathetic Prometheus film) :)

I assume David knew or assumed that something significant would be spawned from the goo. But I don't think we should read too much into any of the dialogue. IMO it was a terrible, cliched script, cobbled together by financial committee. A terrible, terrible disappointment.

What is wrong with both of you? What (please don't go into to too much detail) made it such a disappointment? It draws brilliant parallels with the original - in terms of atmosphere, acting, dialogue, scenery and camera work. Knowing that the same guy directed "the awesome original Alien film" directed this film also, how can you say with such conviction it was "pathetic". It's unjust and unfair. It was a good movie. Just remember, Alien was given similar comments when it originally screened. You wait.

Is that directed at me? I think I've been quite polite in putting my message across.

My comment was not irrational, but I do understand that the negativity came across too strongly. I have been following this site for weeks, watching all the clips, reading the comments. I don't think Alien was the best film ever made, but I do think it was a good science fiction film and I always thought that the 'space-jockey' angle was potentially fascinating and I desperately, desperately wanted Prometheus to be a great movie. No doubt that was a major factor behind my negativity. I only 'signed up' yesterday because I had just seen the film and was so overwhelmingly disappointed by it. I know how Hollywood works, and I had prepared myself to be let down. I told myself that all the best bits would have been in the trailer(s). However, what I was not prepared for was the (IMO) horrible mess that Prometheus is. As others have said far more eloquently, the character development (arguably bar David) was non-existent. But also the plot was corny, the script was simplistic (or at least ended that way in the cutting room) and the acting was by numbers - I didn't feel any of the characters (again, except David ironically). I'm not interested in writing a long review, but if anyone wants to tell me how good the film is after seeing it (and I hope you enjoy it), I will gladly share my own opinions on particular aspects. I don't expect anyone here to share my views, but given my enormous disappointment I felt the need to express them. One of my favourite films is Before Sunset, which I imagine most people here would consider absolute crap. And for the same reason, you may enjoy Prometheus.

I think a lot of people share your opinions MattR. The problem is that some people seem to see our disappointment as a calculated attack on the movie. This couldn't be further from the truth. No one wanted this film to fail, but fail it has.

Fair comments, but where is there lacking character development? Where is Alien and Aliens was there any better character development (I AM NOT SAYING THERE WASN'T, I am interested and curious, as I obviously don't understand when characters are developed are not - genuinely).

Spuppet - In Alien we saw that Lambert was a very frightened woman and we shared her fear. In Aliens we saw that Hudson was a prick, but then felt empathy when he crumpled in the face of such horror. In Alien3 we understood the doctor's shame. In Prometheus virtually every character 'entered stage left and exited stage right' without revealing anything interesting about themselves. All we discovered was the stereotype they were there to portray. We had the corporate bitch who never actually did anything other than look like she had a cork in her butt. We had the crazy geologist who all but said "hey, I'm a crazy geologist - look at my hair". We had the tough captain who 'did the right thing' in the final reel. None of these characters were believable. Have you EVER met people like this in the real world? But Lambert, Hudson and Charles Dance's doctor? Yes, they were real, believable people. And therein lies one of the great fascinations/functions of good cinema. We feel for the characters. We share their joy, their fear, their hopes... We live a little life with them. In Prometheus I only felt any engagement with two of the characters. With Noomi Rapace, the overwhelming sense was "you are such a whiner, and a terrible scientist to boot". David was the only character that was remotely sympathetic (and yes, I am very well aware of the irony this fact entails). But he was ambiguous at the same time - when he infected Rapace's boyfriend it was possible to think: "well done!" and "you b*****d!" at the same time. Sorry to labour this point, but Fassbinder created a great character in a terrible movie.
