I think you're both right. The back of the head has more taper than it needs to be the classic alien.

Exactly, I watched a clip showing this end scene with this new xeno over and over, then looked at the mural, noticed the head as you said is more tapered down...seems to be...

Well...
i think theres a similarity too. By the way, i kinda like the design; i dont think its ridicolous, but very disturbing, "alien", but different. It kinda looks like its still mutating while you watch it.

I think we can draw similarities.....
But its left open for a reason....
We can assume that the Xeno in Alien already happened... but we get no direct answers because if we did then that would rule out the new Xeno to be the Progenitor....
Likewise if the movie ended with the Engineer getting into another ship take off and then crash on LV 426 and then get Chest Busted, this would then rule out the Xeno being created years prior and also the direct organism that wiped out the Engineers all but one that is...
Lindelofs style would leave that as it is and never ever answer either.
I think Ridley will be under pressure to in Prometheus 2 or a 3rd to eventually clear up and give which of those events leads to the Xeno.
Or indeed another event unrelated all together.

Not to be pedantic here but...
Surely the Xeno we're familiar with only came about because of the splicing of the Face Hugger and Kane's DNA.
It's all a bit of a minefield really - The new Xeno wouldn't have happened if Shaw hadn't got pregnant, and Cuddles hadn't got to the SJ. The fact that both Aliens look similar leads me to suspect that SJ's have obviously been messing around with their DNA for some time. Maybe they revered the Xeno (hence the mural) and wanted to somehow splice the two species together... but it all went tits up.
Maybe the sequels will show further variations to the evolution of the Xeno, finally getting us back to Alien (wasn't that what Scott speculated about Prom III)?
