Lindelof explaination for black goo...how it does the things it does...

Per DL from interview with him & scott... http://www.totalfilm.com/news/ridley-scott-reveals-prometheus-secrets-to-t3 The movie demonstrates what it does in certain circumstances. So, here’s what it does if it gets on worms; here’s what it does if it gets on your face; here’s what it does if someone just puts a little bit of it in your drink. Now we see that that lots of this is headed to Earth. Now, you used the word “weapon” – you’re extrapolating that based on the theory Janek [Idris Elba] has, because it looks like a payload to him; all these ships are loaded with this stuff, and they’re headed for Earth. The intent has to be to wipe us out, or is it to evolve us, or is it for something else? These are all hopefully questions and points of debate – frustrating for some – but ultimately the kind of science fiction. Why the two movies that Ridley did decades ago are still being discussed is this idea that when you walk out of the cinema that you have to go into a community and start to discuss. “Well, wait a minute, this is what I think happened.” And you’re hopefully mirroring the conversation that the characters are having in the movie, and more importantly this is why Shaw says what she says at the end of the movie. Which is, “I’m not going back to Earth and calling it a day, I need to know a little bit more about what’s happening here.”

No Nvidia, science fiction makes you discuss ideas, not "what does this poorly written plot furthering device do?" Believe me the writer had no idea what the goo did either, but it gave him a means to an end. To further the "story" to its conclusion and to provide cheap thrills-of which there were none. Don't waste your time trying to make sense of it. As any Lost fan will tell you there isn't any. Although Lost had strong characters in it. This film has no characters in it, merely faces. :)

I hope now Lindelof will step down and humbly bow the fuck out from script writing

I agree with @Secure that shit Hudson! Doesn't fly - it's just a lazy, unsophisticated, huckster-ish, smoke & mirrors approach.

Not that I'm defending Lindelof, but thought this would be interesting to you based on the way the conversation is going. From an interview with Lindelof here. "All these questions were on the table and yes, there were drafts with more specifically spelled out versions. Ridley’s instinct was to pull back and I’d say ‘I’m still eating shit a year on from the end of Lost where we didn’t directly spell everything out – are you sure you want to do this?’ He would rather have had people fighting against it and not know then spell it out. I know its obnoxious to say that you should see the movie a couple of times to really appreciate it but that is how the movie was designed" "You don’t argue with Ridley Scott about the movie he wants to make. If you have unanswered questions some people are going to be creatively intrigue by it and others will be pissed off by it and that galvanised him – as there’s nothing he loves more than to piss people off. In the right way of course."

"I’m still eating shit a year on from the end of Lost where we didn’t directly spell everything out " such a liar....he will be eating shit for 20 years for this little stunt he pulled with Prometheus

I Believe the First Engineer was Prometheus, he gave life to a planet, I believe he wasn't supposed to. So his people wanted to destroy what he gave to that planet, i believe he was a rouge, he sacrificed himself, his DNA mixed with the stuff that was in that bowl, and sparked life....

Come on! Did Ridley see X-Files? Black goo doing stuff to people?... so original. Lindeldork as always, scavenging from where he can... :)

I think the black goo was more like ADAM from bioshock. It breaks tissue down at a molecular level and makes the tissue pliable to any specific situation making organics a sort of canvas for evolution. With "advanced species" like the engineers it would break them down if consumed then mixed with water it would begin to form life at it's most basic level. With the worms, it actually evolved them into the xeno cobra type of animal. With the guy who got the helmet melted to his face. He was in shock disarray and pain while the goo got onto his face and most likely into his brain which made him go completely mad. I think that the writer new what the black goo was.

in which case i'm sure David incorrectly assumed that infecting the dr. with the drop in his drink would create an engineer had he impregnated shaw

@SmokedLtStash,... Well, Bioshock (excellent game BTW) is predated by the black oil in X-Files by almost 12 years. That is what I mean about the lack of originality. But in its effect, it compares to BS. And probably, Lindeldork took it out of BS anyway, being the cheesy pop writer that he is. About David´s actions with the black goo: he was ordered by Weyland to experiment on a crew member to see if that gives some kind of endurance or rejuvenation. :)

Interesting theory, Thoughtking05. I hadn't thought of that. I think I remember Scott stating in an interview that the opening scene could have been earth or any other planet in need of life.
