Just wanted to get some insight on how people are reacting to all the reviews out there.
I'm sorry but I LOVE reading some of the negative reviews. For some reason they give me joy, make me laugh etc. Not because I will not like the film. Jury is out on that until 12:01. I am very pro-RS and the way they chose to go with the film in regards to it not being a straight prequel and their view on questions vs answers. I think I'll love it tbh. But I just can't stay away from all the rants. They provide so much entertainment for me. This film deserves my money just for providing me with this entertainment.
Are the negative reviews swaying any of you? Are the positive reviews swaying you? Will you or do you normally let reviews sway your decision to see a film?

I let reviews sway my opinion only if they are extremely negative (less than 10% on Rottentomatoes or Metacritic) otherwise I only take them into account when discussing the film. Ultimately, I will decide on what I think of the film after I see it. Now, knowing that Lindelof wrote it and the complaints are mainly being vaulted against him and the script, does give me serous pause.

Each to their own, you should never let what people say about a movie put you off.
Especially if its a movie you have been waiting for ages for..
If you watch it and it fails to live up to your expectations then you should make that judgement on your own by watching it yourself and not by what others put.
If anything it may lead you to not have as high expectation and in which case you could leave very pleased with the out come.
I understand the fustration by some mods on here at Nagative reviews and spoiler reviews in General, especially if they are from the USA and dont get to see the movie yet.
As they have sacreviced themselves by being mods, you see when we choose to look at spoilers we do so by our own choice....
Some spoilers are posted in none spoiler sections and the mods have to go and move and clear up those posts and thus can spoil the movie for themselves as far as knowing the plot.
Not everyone will see the movie the same as each other, thats life and human nature...
The movie is not as bad as some make out, and has a lot of promise for Prometheus 2.
I hope you enjoy the movie, i am going to see it again the weekend or next wednesday this time in 2D.

No its not as bad as some make it out, but its still pretty bad. Cheesy dialogue, plot holes, poor acting from everyone bar Fassbender. I swear the script at times is how Rob Zombie imagines teenagers to talk in his films.
June 06, 2012
Nope. Not at all.
I'll see this film and at least walk out with something good. I cannot believe it's a flop. I've waited since '79 for this film. Good or not, I'll pay my $8.00 and enjoy.
But, I'll state my likes and dislikes after.
June 06, 2012
It would be better to go see the movie and be disapointed than to not had seen it and then see it on TV years latter and then think....
Actually thats not bad at all.... or i enjoyed that.
Someone could tell me that a certain flavour sandwich is awfull but i would rather find out for myself.

@Double Ice Back fire...I'm not asking anyone's opinion on the film. This is about the affect of all the reviews on each individual.
Please everyone, no talk of what you thought about the film. There are PLENTY of other threads and sections to talk about those issues.
@Drake&BigDave...Good thoughts. Personally, I do sometimes let reviews sway my descision. Those cases are few and far between though. Usually I only let that happen in regards to b-movies and even if they get bad reviews I still sometimes watch them. For instance there's a film called The Last Lovecraft: Relic of Cthulu that I had never heard of but saw a copy of at a half price book store. I didn't want to fork over the cash going in blind so I read some reviews. Some were decent so I bought it. It usually works that way for me. I usually read the reviews and then decide to buy rather than not buy. Like I said that rarely happens. With netflix and everything there is less risk inviolved as far as wasting cash.
TBH I read more of the negative reviews than the positive. It kinda fuels my fire to love the film as I'm usually one to go against the grain. I don't go against the grain for the sake of going against the grain, though. If I dont like the film I don't like the film.
Man, do I really have to wait another 24 hours and some change?!

Thats what i am saying...
I like Peperoni on my Pizza i like a lot of meat on them, but also has to have some veg, i dont like Meet Feasts thats too much Peperoni and other Meets and no Veg......
But some may love that kind of Pizza...
There are more things i liked about the movie than disliked, and someone should be able to go see and make their own minds up....
I hope you enjoy it...... i know one thing i will garuntee..... The Visuals and attention to detail in the Visual department is near flawless.....
The Plot is also very bold and deep..... just needed more longer movie to flesh it out and do it the justice it needed.
But we have Prometheus 2 for that ;)

I read reviews, assimilated too many spoilers, had my expectations (thankfully) lowered and went into the film mentally confirming every plot detail that I had foolishly sought and found on the internet, leaving the film very underwhelmed.
This has been a lesson in how not to become obsessed with future film. You just set yourself up for a fall.
That said, I have completely neglected The Dark Knight Rises in my rather comprehensive scouring of all things Prometheus. I may even enjoy it.
June 06, 2012
Watched Prometheus at the cinema last night and found it very enjoyable, although I must admit the enjoyment was not instantaneous. Without giving anything away, my initial feelings were of resentment when comparing the style of the other Alien films to Prometheus.
However, the enjoyment factor built up afterwards in a suspenseful way which had me asking questions and wondering about the unknown. This was more rewarding than an action flick with no brains and the reason I joined this forum.
Like Carpenter, Scott is my kind of director.

yesterday I started a thread asking everyone to list all the alien movies in order with their favourite 1st and out of the 17 replies I got no 2 were the same obviously it's on a very small scale but it does show how everyone on here will take something different away from the movie
Everybody is different and everyone will rate it differently so the only review that matters is yours
enjoy the movie
Or not it's up to you ;-)

The movie has some serious problems, but I am still dragging a bunch of friends to see it in 3D IMAX this weekend. The one thing you won't hear from even the harshest critics is that the movie doesn't look good. Ridley himself always says he is primarily a visual director and those visuals are definitely worth experiencing on the big screen.
June 06, 2012
Like BigDave said, never let someones reviews or opinions influence your opinion on something. Just go into it with an open mind.
Personally, I was EXTREMELY disappointed leaving the cinema and felt somehow cheated.
But thankfully a 2nd viewing made the film a lot better for me. It was just a shock at first that the movie doesnt answer much and needs either an extended cut or a sequel for it to work IMO.
Also, while the 3D was great, and done subtly, I think it mightve been a bit of a distraction?
My family who knew NOTHING of the film(I kept it secret for them) and are all Alien fans gave it 3/10 which I think is a bit unfair really....they mustve hated it a LOT more than I did lol
@taka - Yeah, the movie has incredible visuals.

I’ve found a few pro critics with whom I generally agree (because I think we're generally on the same wavelength, share the same taste, etc.) and I do pay attention to their reviews, especially if they really praise an art film that I'm otherwise unlikely to have heard of.
But, I'd never let a critic’s negative review sway me from seeing something I'm interested in. My tastes tend to skew way away from EVERYTHING the general public relates to. If I like a new, unusual jam flavor at Trader Joes®, it'll be gone from the shelves (discontinued) in 4 months time. I like moss, and most people are not even sure if it's a plant or not. I speak constructed alien languages, and almost everyone alive thinks that's the weirdest thing possible. I've grown accustomed to having to "fend for myself" when it comes to evaluating almost everything. So, I tend much more to listen to critics who are positive, but still with my own meta-critic ear.
I also love it when critics REALLY hate something and they pull out humor (cleverly) to prove how strongly they feel bout something. This is the perfect example. “I wanted to cry for help, but in bread no one can hear you scream.” OMG. Still brings tears of joy to my eyes. But, I don't really dislike John Carter. It was just a horrible waste of (over budget) money and opportunity to make the adult-focused film that it should have been. (Disney never could have pulled it off in the first place. Not in their DNA.)
The thing that's fascinating about the RANTS here (by non-pros), is the vitriol that Prometheus’ detractors spew upon those who want to and do enjoy the film. Raw (protected by anonymity) human nature is a far more horrific thing than anything that Scott or Lindelof seem to have dreamed up for this incarnation of "Alien universe" entertainment.
I'm looking forward to Friday.

Still don't see why everyone comes in here and talks about what they thought of the movie. Like I said there are PLENTY, PLENTY, PLENTY and one more PLENTY of other threads and areas of this site to talk about that on. Geeeeez. It's like members come in here and post without reading any of the posts already here.
That said, I think it's really kind of silly when some act like you shouldn't give ANY weight to critics or reviews. That's ludicrous. I don't know anyone who actually let reviews and others opinion dictate how they feel about a film which is how most are acting in this instance. Seem like a lot are saying "make up your own mind about if you like the film or not" instead of "make up your own mind about if you want to SEE the film or not."
Reviews are there to help us and like sukkal has basically said, you have to find a few that have your tastes and decide how much weight their opinions deserve.
I basically started this thread as a kind of wink to all the negative reviews, not from critics but from others, that go a bit overboard and have let their excpectations or desire for this film to be what THEY think it should be warp their view of how bad the film is. I honestly think those reviews are funny.
@sukkal...LOVE your last paragraph!

It is a bit different than many (myseld as well) expected on story side, I think that is one of the main sources of disappointment and negative critics.
The other is probably that this film is not that scary, dark and "horror" type as the first two Alien. So do not expect that. I went to the movie theater with open mind and I don't feel as such. Lucky me. :)
But on the other side I think this film is a perfect prequel of the (to be made?) real prequel(s ?) of the Alien franchise films.
I am happy that I got a lot of answers to the origins and roots of the species, and of course with some thinking these infos help connect some of the pieces toghether with the Alien films. On the other side it left many questions unanswered or new ones opened.
I definitely recommend the film for watching even for stict Alien1-2 fans. I really enjoyed it from start to end, my only disappointment this time is that it has an "end" and I can`t wait to see the follow up movie. Fingers crossed that it will happen and all the remaining things get sorted out and connected.
