Prometheus v AVP

Firstly, no, I'm not mental. Having read many of my fellow posters views on Prometheus many feel the same as me in that whilst perhaps enjoying the film feel a little short changed with the lack of depth or plot substance. So many questions remain unanswered and so many potential plot vehicles were under used or ignored. In comparison to AVP which is much maligned by the purists. Personally I did enjoy it. There are distinct similarities in the plot in that a discovery is made which they travel to isolated locations to investigate only to encounter inevitable peril. The difference in my opinion is that AVP executes the story at a better pace and gives the audience the answers to the questions posed. As a visual spectacle there's no contest. Ridley Scott is clearly a visionary and created an aesthetic masterpiece, However I feel that after such a long wait for this story I'd have gladly compromised style for substance on this occasion in order to see the story I wanted told. Thoughts?

Well i must tell you - though i think i am a REAL hardcore-sci-fi-intelligent-thinking-blah Fanboy, AvP was EVEN BETTER then prometheus! I hate to say this but AvP (ONLY part 1) thrilled me even more and had a good "ground idea", though i am not sure if it is really necessary to "mix" creatures from different sci-fi-universes "just to make some $". Prometheus was neither a "thriller with interesting sci-fi ideas" NOR a "horror-monster-sci-fi-scary-movie". It was just as i remember TO STUPID, especially the last 1/3 of prometheus i wondered the whole time "...HEEEE? What shit is THIS about?...". but i will watch it anyway 2 or 3 times again, so may be i may change my opinion (not knowing to which direction..grmpf). all in all i am sad about the outcome of this large production, from sight of a fanboy.

Short changed, I like that Well I totally agree with you, if you've seen the film there are a lot of similarities in that respect. In terms of whether one film executes this better than the other, I think AVP wins in terms of pacing, screenplay, logical plot flow etc. In stating this, I found AVP quite boring and unintersting in comparison to prometheus, probably due to its predictability and lack of interesting subject matter. With reference to prometheus, the most frustrating thing is that I don't think it's even a question of style over substance. It escapes me why, in such an obviously hard thought out film, you can't have a decent, at least logical plot and screenplay, as well as those stunning visuals. Why can't one have it's cake and eat it too? The great irony between these two films (one an abomination, the other a saviour) is that, although we may look down our noses at AVP, it does the simple things well, which prometheus can't even manage to do. The question begs to be asked, were prometheus made by Anderson, would it have even turned out better? Let alone, with a Cameron, a Spielberg or a Lucas?

This is like saying that the Hare and the Tortoise is better than Shakespeare's King Lear, simply because the plot is more cohesive and easier to follow. There is no comparison between avp and prometheus. Prometheus is jampacked with ideas, stunning visuals, mindbending concepts and stuff that is so over our heads... I totally disagree that everything needed to be tied up nicely. Most things aren't tied up nicely, they aren't tied up at all, and its deliberate. The Alien movies are about the unknown, something never before seen, shocking the audience, showing them something they aren't prepared for (hence the name, alien!). Do you think that after five days on an abandonded planet you'd have any idea about the ins and outs of how the species living there worked, their political system, why you were sent there, who is who? Of course not. Having a cohesive plot is not the benchmark for a brilliant film, especially if its a movie about the senseless rampage of life and evolution. Keep in mind that this movie is hardcore, old school sci-fi. It is so out there and conceptual that we can't look at it in the same way you look at some crime thriller or action movie.

You also missed 1 very big point guys, Prometheus got between $120-130 million for a budget while AVP was only $60 million so they were hampered by want they could do, not to mention rule out any big space film. So really what we got was quite good when you compare it to Prometheus

ho - ly - shit! Surely we can't compare Prometheus to AVP? Other than to say one is shite and the other not. They are very different films (AVP just seemed an excuse to get predators facing off against Xenos, show a bit of action and then leg it to the bank) and (and I keep banging on about this!) I think there will be a directors cut which will much improve prometheus. I hope it will be more along the lines of 2001, with a more thoughtful pace, at least in the first half. When we get that I'm sure we'll have a classic sci fi film in the vein of 2001 or Bladerunner. Currently the film is too dense and short to deal with the big ideas it has, a little more time to develop the characters and plot will go a long way - there's an epic film in there somewhere, we just haven't seen it yet!

Structurally the same plot, but I'd say they're both pretty shite. Both are extremely derivative - AvP from the original movies, and Prometheus from stock horror cliches.

For someone who hates AVP, his movie sure does look a lot like it. From the archaeological writings found across cultures all over the world, to the scene where Charlize The mission - which looks and sounds very much like Sanaa Lathan's scene in AVP. I still hated AVPR, but AVP was good. I read that James Cameron was pleasantly surprised with AVP. I think Scotts visuals were incomparable. The depth of his story was better only because you could go so many more places with it. But way too many unanswered questions, and the xenomorph looking - what the hell? Despite having many more characters in avp (I think) they were developed sooo much better. Were supposed to care about Charlize'S character, but in the end nobody care about the Shakespearean tragedy of her daddy problems. People kept waiting for her to kick some ass, but she never did.
