Engineer doesn't immediately attack after getting up from sleep - what pisses hi

Ridley's Alien
MemberOvomorphJune 09, 20121341 Views21 RepliesMr.Engineer gets up from sleep, sees some humans. If he wanted to really finish them, he wouldn't wait for the petty talk of Weyland or David. He would be straight onto destruction business. No he gave some time for them to say or react. I really think he might have been stunned for a minute to see the "creations" in front of him. Curiosity get the better of him to see why they came here. But when he notices David, he may have realised it to be an Android, then gets angry to see what his "creations" made. My creations replicate me ???? This reminds him his true purpose - destroy Earth. This is my theory. Of course, why they wanted to destory us in the first place is still unanswered. Please share your thoughts.

maybe he was just confused from stasis. the novelty of david and the rest wore off quickly. he remember that they were going to destroy these creations. once he "woke up" all the way it was back to the mission at hand.

The whole scene was quite cringe worthy & appalingly bad IMO. I'm completely impartial to it. For all I care the giant, angry smurf could have got up, realised he needed the toilet after such a long time asleep (morning glory), thought about it for a second before deciding to dispatch of everyone before he dashed off to the privy! There. That's my theory.

db73,
pre-emptying toilet slaughter?

David makes an apparent attempt to speak to the engineer in his own alien language right before the engineer goes ape$h*!. Maybe what David said was a "bad translation" of what he was trying to say. David is able to decipher the technical grammar and words of the alien language, but that does NOT mean he understands the connotations and cultural significance of the words/delivery/tone he's using to say it ---and when speaking to an alien civilization, who knows what those issues may be?
Here on Earth, in some cultures a smile is considered a threat of violence.

I guess that engineer is like me. I hardly get any sleep and when I do get sleep, I take some buffer time after I wake up from the sleep. I guess insomnia and the dream issues could be the reason for that guy to piss off. I think engineer should listen to the white noise before going to sleep. It worked for me.
Uncertainty is the only certainty there is, and knowing how to live with insecurity is the only security.

Aren't any of you thinking about the fact that the film features ancient mythologies and christian symbolism for a reason?
Tower of Babel... humans try to reach the heavens - punished
Prometheus, defies the god to give humans fire (ability to create their own fire ) and is punished with torture.
Once this Space Jockey wakes up, after planning to go kill the race that his kind created.... he finds 4 of them, plus one of THEIR creations ON HIS BRIDGE, waking him up, and daring to address him as equals in his language, seeking answers.
He looks at David, feels his head, realises he is an android (probably an abomination) and then rips his head off and uses it as a weapon to kill Weyland, who has come seeking immortality from the 'makers' - he had his feet washed and anointed beforehand .
The mythology stuff annoys me, but I knew that it was a core part of the film, so I paid attention. I think those are your clues as to what's going on.

That was a horrible first encounter. They made humans look like violent idiots. The engineer woke up and saw humans, got his bearings while all this noise was going on around him. The emotion of the room was violent, weak and anger all mixed together. The last thing that was said before David spoke were Weyland's words "Tell him why I'm here." I would imagine David said something like "The old man wants to be immortal."
The engineer most likely let his broken words go in one ear and out the other, took a second to analyze David (what we created) much like an artist looks at another's work then went on with his mission to kill all humans.

I think the reason the engineer attacked them after waking up was (1) David's existence offended him, (2) the human presence not just at his facility, but at his bedside with no offerings of at least milk and cookies and (3) he was going to black goo the whole race anyway.
So why were they going to black goo the Earth? Could be many reasons:
1) Simply because they could or felt like it (just like the reason for creation)
2) To test their new batch of urn/body-hugger/super-xenos out
3) They were offended during their last visit when they got no invite to the "last supper" after-dinner "rave party"
4) Because they had intel about this pesky Roman Empire that was going around being bossy (which was their job)

Why is everybody assuming that the Engineer decapitated David because he's an android, and ignoring the fact that we really don't know what David said to the Engineer right before said decapitation?
And, btw, the primordial black goo will be the destruction AND genetic enslavement of the human race---It's in the X-Files.

You make an excellent point. David could have gotten revenge on HIS creators and said, "The old geezer to my left told you to go bugger a xeno. And the others came here to steal your Eggo waffles. Oh, BTW, the red-head is about to bolt off to a ship near here and has tasty snacks and alcohol that she doesn't plan on sharing...not even with you, you blue smurf." : P

So i have this theory, is there a chance that the first giant robe-wearin' smurf at the beginning who went and made babies with earth was part of some cult/religion that wanted to make humans buuuut the cranky dude who wakes up and beats everyone up side the head isn't with the original makers and looks at humans as an abomination, and thats why he wasn't too jazzed to see them? As for the pause in attacking, waking up after 2000 years wouldn't feel too great, obviously seeing hairy mini me's everywhere would be a bit disorienting, and yes, now that i think about it seeing how advanced they had become by being there, and creating synthetic life in their own likeness would set him off...

the actor who plays David said in an interview that he said to the engineers basically what weyland told him to say.
maybe he didn't like the request for more life or maybe there was nothing the humans could say that would save them. Considering this engineers mission was to destroy all humans he might have just killed them anyway.
June 09, 2012
Perhaps the engineers believe that we are an "alien " that needs to be destroyed just like we believed that blowing up lv426 was the way to go in destroying the other species of aliens.

There is a similar thread to this earlier on... I think it links to what David said to the Engineer.... Just before they go out, doesn't David say to Shaw "don't we all wish our parents were dead?"... maybe he said something like..."These humans have travelled millions of miles across space from a planet called Earth, that you created, to come and destroy you... they created me in their image - just like you did to them.... only they did not have to destroy themselves to create life - check my head and you will see that I am not as they are...Their planet has millions of their kind who are rutheless and ready for war-they are the superior race now and they are a threat to you... what are you going to do about that?"...

When the Engineer places his hand on David's head does the Engineer have some ability to 'see' things from someone's mind? I guess it will all come out in the sequel

So the people of earth are on his shit list, but could he recognise us at first?
Possible reasons why not in no particular order:
-I bet they've taken loads of us away from earth over the years (we'd make great pets!)
-Have they adapted other species on other planets to their image? (That we could be confused with)
-He probably doesn't know that he's been out for 2000 years! (So genuine earthmen all the way out here might not be his first guess.)
-There's no way he would recognise our modern English.
-Then David starts chatting in ancient. The penny drops. He goes ape-shit.
