My Spoiler Free Prometheus Review. Prometheus is definitely a film that will have viewers wanting to sit down and digest it for awhile and will also inspire some arguments between sci-fi fans too. On the positive side, the film is well paced. Personally I always find it to be a plus when a two hour film feels like it went by in an hour and hate it when I watch a film that is less than 90 minutes, but feels like three hours. However Prometheus might be too tightly cut together since too many background characters are barely extras and there is little to no character development aside from Noomi Repace, whose character is central to the film. While Michael Fassbender delivers an intriguing performance, I think Repace held her own quite well and they both had a bit of onscreen chemistry together too. The Real (D) 3D is amazing though occasionally some of the action lost focus. I can't state if it was a result of the theater I caught the screening in or something inherent to the film itself. At times it is difficult to judge some of the action in the film though one cannot assume the motivations of an extraterrestrial species can ever be understood anymore than some Earthly creatures' behavior can appear as anything less than enigmatic besides the fight or flight response built into most known fauna. Some instances simply defy logic. Since the majority of the characters are flat, it should be no surprise that character actions and reactions are almost robotic. That is quite a problem when your film has a creepy android character that behaves more like a human than some of the human characters and there is no excuse for this especially in a story where profound ideas are supposed to be explored. Prometheus ultimately does not stand well at all as a complete story. Even films that are the midpoint of a larger story that conclude with cliffhangers, should still make the viewer feel like they have seen something complete onto itself. Otherwise there is no reason why someone would want to see the next installment. While the film may have little to no connection to Alien other than clearly taking place before the events of that film and featuring elements introduced in Alien, it does not create any kind of new mythology that is consistent throughout. At times it seems as though anything goes. Yet a few minor tweaks could have made this a more satisfying prequel to Alien and still explored the new themes Prometheus introduces to the franchise. As is, I think the filmmakers diluted the fear and wonder that made the original Alien such a classic. Prometheus could have been worse, but it could have been so much better. The only hope left lies in the future home video release, which I hope makes the film as a whole feel like a complete story instead of a pretty amalgamation of concepts and visuals with little focus. Prometheus is in theaters now in the US from Twentieth Century Fox. (c) Copyright 2012 By Mark Rivera All Rights Reserved.
