Quality Death

I like the film, but don't love it. I feel this films lacks QUALITY death. ALIEN had quality death. We had never seen any deaths like that before upon its release. Filmmakers often have made that mistake. Death is an emotional subject for everyone. It stabs deep(no pun intended). When you have proper character development(Prometheus needed it) and each character(we care about) dies in a grisly AND nightmarish way, it strikes a special chord. ALIEN succeeded in that. Even ALIENS had it(Cpl. Ferro, Vasquez and Gorman). I feel Prometheus could've been a classic with it. I was also looking forward to Fifield mutating into some sort of abomination wreaking a nightmare on the crew. It was a 5 of 10 for me. I wanted it to match the movie experience I had with ALIEN(saw it in the theater as a 7yr old) and ALIENS(saw in theater in junior high). It was ok, but man, the potential. It was eye candy(ALIEN subtleties) enough for blu-ray(deleted scenes are desperately needed).

I absolutely agree with this post. I always refer to quality deaths as 'smart' deaths. This movie had absolutely no smart deaths, other than maybe Janek's sacrifice. Everything else just felt unnecessary. I was pretty bummed by this because many of the deaths could have been really smart by just a few minutes extra to set up the scenes. An example for you to consider; Fifield and Milburn. The static storm could have cut out their electronics periodically, and they got lost. The storm begins to affect their flashlights or they begin to bug out. They lose light. Light flashes on, reveals hissing Cobralien, and it attacks on sight. That may be a cheesy explanation to their death, but at least it would be -an- explanation to their death. I mean a geologist getting lost, and a biologist poking an alien creature. Makes me cringe! Anyhow, end of rant. The movie needed much more plausible deaths. *EDIT* Even a simple line like; "Oh my gosh Fifield, this is the first live non-terrestrial creature mankind has every come into contact with. We have to take back a sample," could've explained why they started to poke the Cobralien. Not, "Hey honey! You're so beautiful! Come here!"

Only 1 quality death but many by-the-numbers 'deserved to die' deaths. Fitfield and Milburn - morons who deserved to die Charlie - smarty pants know it all deserves to die Peter - rich mean old mortal who thinks he's a god deserved to die Janek - heroic death as a last ditch sacrifice Janek's crew - died to see winner of bet after death Meredith - bitch chicks deserve to be crushed Random spaceship guy - deserved to die because they were there Elizabeth - also deserved to die bur didnt coz even at the end she didnt undertand her mission was futile David - can't die as he's android but still fun to see standalone talking head Hostile Engineer - deserved to die coz they created the transformative goo

Alien had the best deaths of almost any horror movie I personally can recall. There was one 'dumb' death, but even that one was far outweighed by the smart deaths. Brett: Brett (guy with the hat) was originally with Ripley, and Parker looking for the chestburster. No one on the crew could have guessed this small worm like entity was going to turn into the monster we know as a Xenomorph. So they go out in search of the creature. They first find a cat on the radar. Parker / Ripley tells Brett to go get the cat so they don't misidentify the cat as the alien again (explains why Brett is separated from the group). Brett goes off to get the cat. He finds the alien's shedded skin too late, and is ambushed. - I don't see how this is a stupid death. Getting the cat was a great idea, and underestimating this small alien creature was reasonable without knowing the potential danger of a full grown Xenomorph. Dallas: Now seeing how dangerous this alien truly is the team come up with a pretty clever way to outsmart the creature and kill it. Corner it in the air ducts. Dallas goes into the airducts armed with a flamethrower, walkie-talkie, and radar. They close in on the Xenomorph, but are outsmarted. Dallas, becoming fearful and knowing he's been outsmarted, tries to escape. Xenomorph kills Dallas. - I don't see how that was stupid. Dallas was prepared, had a plan, and was outsmarted. Parker and Lambert: Parker and Lambert have to collect supplies for the trip back home. They both leave with walkie-talkies, and a flame-thrower. They were well prepared. Sadly, the Xenomorph was so terrifying Lambert went into shock and couldn't move. Parker, not being able to kill his own crewmember is compromised, because he cannot get a clean shot. The Xenomorph was smart enough to take this opportunity and killed Parker. Lambert, still being in a state of shock was easy pickings for the Xenomorph. - Again, not a stupid death to me. I've been so terrified I couldn't move before, and I could never kill anyone I'm close to in a flash decision like Parker. They came prepared and the Xenomorph again divided, conquered, used intelligent tactics. The dumb death: Kane: Tripped and fell into the egg stasis hanger. Stupidly gets too close to an obvious egg looking object and falls victim to the facehugger. To me all of these deaths (except Kane's) weren't stupid at all. The Xenomorph was just more intelligent and outwitted the humans.

Perhaps I should clarify my use for 'quality death' for all the teenie bopper geniuses here: I've seen people beaten to death, thrown to death, and burned to death before. That type of crap belongs in Lethal Weapon movies. Give me something new from creatures that may have a unique way of killing. The Chestburster scene was ahead of its time. The deaths of Brett and Parker were way ahead of its time. Friday the 13th, 'Mostly.....'??? Please. Ease up. Watch a chick flick, man.

Chick flick? Not sure what that's supposed to mean when I'm addressing the puerile first person shooter, 'faces of death' mentality involved here. Unique ways of dying could have made this a classic? I almostly feel a little sorry for you, almostly, but if that's what turns your crank, so be it.
