Slime on Recording Device Switch?

So what was with the slime that David finds on the first "black box recording device switch" within the dome? He swipes it, pulls his fingers apart to reveal a strange type of effervescence and then smells it and is seemingly shocked, saying "impressive" or something along those lines. I'm still confused as to that little moment and what the hell it has to do with anything...

not a clue...you can go on and on with little unexplained things like this one. why were all the vases practically gushing with tar, while the one David brings back has a set of self-contained ampoules with a small amount of the black stuff...contained unless you break off the top if the ampoule?

it appeared that he sprayed some sort of gas on it, maybe to freeze it. Then he kept it refrigerated, Maybe at low temperatures it doesn't activate.

I'd like to see that scene again, but from what I remember I thought it gave a little electric zap when he pulled his fingers apart. I thought it was like a pizo electric crystal in gel form. Maybe left in the controls to power it from touch contact if power is down. No need to add batteries!!

It certainly was left over slime from something. It didn't seem like it had anything to do with the device. It was alien in nature.
