When David Lynch made that film in '84, I thought many things just didn't fit.
Even though Kyle MacLachlan is a superb actor, I just didn't think he fit the role of Paul. But, trying to squeeze a HUGE novel like that into one feature film was a very tough task. I'm not saying it's a bad film, just confusing to those that have not read the novel.
SciFi's "Frank Herbert's Dune" is a superior film as everything fit so nicely. For those that haven't seen it, I highly recommend it. If you haven't read the novel, do so. One of the best pieces of literature ever written.
