Here is my take...The old man wants longer life...David has been on that agenda from the begining. The old man even hid it from his daughter and she suspects something more than once...Remember her demanding to know what the old man told David and slamming him against the wall? Remember her telling the professors to report to her? The old man wants eternal life and she wants him dead already so she can take over....David finds a live engineer and the old man tells David to tell the engineer the following We know about the goo. We can use it against you or help you with it. All we want in return is your formula to extend life. Do we have a deal?

It comes from the flow of the scenes and builds up to this. The engineer is listening attentively and then realizes 1. These people got a go and offer rejected 2. So does there whole entire planet. None of this would have happened if they didnt have the metldown 2000 years ago. This engineer would have gone to earth and wiped it out...Look how the engineer moves with a purpose after leveling everyone in the room... By the way...it is my interpretation..but it flows He who commands and uses the GOO.....that is who rules...

I like it...provides the motivation...but why oh why did they decide to keep it purposefully a mystery from the audience. Ambiguity in moderation maybe, but in certain instances, especially if it drives the third act....? Daft

Because sci-fi is best enjoyed when you spoon feed it instead of gulping it. That is where the shock of it all comes in is when you figure out the OH NO...we were so wrong moment like shaw did....

This is all speculation, that's what makes it fun. My take on David is he had his own agenda. The line that clenched that for me was when he said what he thought all children wanted... For their parents to die. Sorry can't remember the exact quote.

It was interesting that the engineer was found and woke from a sleep chamber. If they had the key to everlasting life, the sleep chamber would be uneccesary.

The Engineer ripped off David's head and levels everyone in the room because of the what David have spoken, knowing that His creations might otherwise fulfill the knowledge to resolve a question they seek to sustain a longer life, or whatever resources that He would provide if ever He does accept what Weyland ask for. He rejected them, because humans as He figured are also capable of creation as he sees David and He doesnt want it to be done by them.

Substitute Black Goo with Black Oil, you have a story about a very relevant & modern conflict. And yes, it also centers around Middle East & North Africa where the Engineer is going. Question is who & what the Engineer represents in current context?
