Why the engineers go back to destroy mankind

My theory as to why the engineer goes back to earth is because there were few engineers left and they had all died in the temple due to some reason we have yet to figure out. So in order to make more of the engineer race, they take all the vases in the ship back to earth. In the vases there is the same black water like material david gave to hollaway, which seemed to be the same black water the engineer drank in the beggining but in a much smaller dose, taking it longer to have an effect on holloway, but seemed to have similar results. By going to earth the will release the black water that was contained inside the green oval within the vase. When they release the material inside the vases they will destroy mankind itself on earth, but completely rewrite or reform the DNA (similar to what happened to the engineer in the beggining) Most likely in the black liquid there is material that can create a living organism that would be to the engineers desire, such as a xeno, the perfect being, or something very similar to a engineer itself. By completely wiping the "slate clean" and destroying man kind, it will in a way restart earth, and by that, once their living organism of their desire is created (something similar to them), they will put them selves out to be the supreme rulers or gods and make the newly created advanced race take up after them and follow after the engineers footsteps, because mainly they wouldnt know any better. The newly created species was just created and would have no one to look up to or be an example to, besides the engineers or just engineer, in that case they will take up after the engineer race. Simply by creating a new species possibly similar to them, they will treat the engineers as their gods, making the engineers the dominant life form, superior to all. These new species could also be wielded as a weapon against any enemy of the engineer, (elder engineer) or they could be used for a bigger agenda we are not aware of yet (possibly purposed in the sequel) This theory correlates with when david said "Sometimes to create life, you must first destroy it" so to create a beneficial new race possibly similar to the engineers, they must first destroy mankind itself... (remember this is just a theory and im not 100% sure on to why everything is happening the way it is)

I see where you're coming from, however here's my twist on things. I don't think the engineers were ever meant to be the dominant species, here's why. Go back to the opening scene, unknown to just how long ago it was, But im sure it was a lot longer than 2000 years. The engineer sacrificing his life....did you notice a difference between the elder engineer and the younger one in stasis? Not at all, they looked no different. Looking at humans, we've all evolved in some sort of way to adjust to our environment, be it eyes, skin color, hair texture. We've evolved. I wonder if they want us dead because of our ability to evolve and their not being able to, or if they want our homeworld so that our climates and atmospheric conditions can affect them in the ways that its effected us, making them more, survivable if you will. Here's an even deeper thought, what if the goo was created to mimic what they think our survivability may or will eventually become? Unstoppable and unstable.

Very interesting evolution theory as to why they want to destroy us, i would like to add tho, when i said elder engineer i meant the old looking humanoid in the concept art, i believe that old looking humanoid made that engineer sacrifice itself to create humans, and by doing so it made other engineers have a hatred for these old wrinkley looking humanoids, which could turn out to be their masters, in which they rebel and go against them, wanting to breed some sort of army of great distruction or create more engineers (at least something very similar to engineers) Remember the engineers are solely engineers, possibly employees to a far "greater race" that has them engineer for them, and possibly they grow hatred with that "far greater race" or their masters. I feel as if they want power due to this, no doubt they weren't meant to be a dominant species, but their potential to be a dominant species is great, due to all the capabilities they hold, such as creating life, which is above all.

Or simply that while they started out as a caste of worker drones dong the bidding of the Engineers, who we haven't seen yet, they started to realise they wanted to be more (as all life eventually does, no matter how you try to contain it - and if the Alien franchise thought us anything, it's that it's very hard to contain things :)) Anyhow, these drones always get the crap jobs, (like Igor digging corpses for Dr. Frankenstein, or the Replicants in Blade Runner) . What are their likely functions? Melt yourself to seed a planet. -right there in scene 1. Go work in a hazardous WMD facility on a barren planet. - we've seen that. Fly this stuff to where we want it deployed. -we've seen that. Act as a host for our Xenomorphs, who will then emerge on the target planet killing our enemies. - We haven't seen that, but it's hinted at on the walls, and by the way the urns are stored in cargo holds. Not like torpedos or bombs, just stacked - no aerodynamic fins, no propulsion. And LOTS of room for people to stand around. I'm guessing that somehow they start to recover their repressed desires for freedom and curiosity, and with that comes anger, revenge and jealousy Anger at being slaves, revenge on the engineers who made them, and jealousy that we humans were seeded by the death of a "Space Jockey" drone, but we have free will, and are allowed to have families, fun, and find our own place and purpose in the universe. If you were them, and resented this... who would you opt to be YOUR replacements as hosts for these terrible bioweapons? Especially, if the Engineers, after your revolt cut off your ability to clone (and thus reproduce)

This is just something to keep in mind, if that first scene was to establish how we were created... We're probably talking +2.5 million years. We just didn't walk out of the ooze, it took some time. I know some theorized it was a suicide but i think this was just a scientific experiment. It's hard to even estimate how old the race is, such sacrifice for science would probably be the norm for such an advance race. And another note, which I havn't seen many comment on... Do the maps/clues mean that they visited earth several times after the first scene? Why leave a star map to the base developing the weapon to destroy us. I've read many theories, but none really seem to answer the question why create us, then millions of years later, try to destroy us. Were we becoming to advanced? Why so many ships, the way the worms in the goo grow, seems like one ship could have done the trick.

They grow hatred for their masters or grow hatred for us? It smacks of the Ol' (and I hate to say this believe me I do, I'm no holy roller) "angels" jealousy of man for possessing a soul, given to man by the creator of both. Causing a "war" in heaven. Especially when the creator elevates man to be at his right hand, which was previously the place for the "angels". Oh boy I hope that is not the direction a sequel will take.

The answer to why they want to kill us is alluded to through the human crew's interaction with David. Its clear they show little regard to him and view him with disdain in some instances, despite how special he is. Human beings would sacrifice a robot they created without a moment's hesitation if they needed to, throwing them away when they ceased to fufill a purpose or were replaced by a newer version. Its likely the Engineers no longer had any reason to keep us around, and someone had to clean their little science experiment up.

I would highly agree @hadley's hope. I feel as If the engineers at first wanted to be visited by humans, but then during the time they had created us and the time time we had launched project Prometheus something went very wrong, either we did something horrible to them possibly when they came to visit us, or they came to a realization about us, based upon our actions. Possibly when they had came, we grew tired of them, cause we were growing at such a fast technological rate, or vise versu.. Either they grew a hatred for us some how or another...

@icophesis I disagree that all we were was a scientific experiment, there's a larger agenda/reasoning on to why they created and why they now want to destroy us..

I have not fully developed a theory about why the engineers want to destroy humanity on earth. With that said, the movie is wrapped up in a melding of religious theory and science. (Shaw's character exemplifies the melding - she's a scientist with faith who wears a cross.). 2000 years in the movie is probably more an estimate than an exact number of years as they get the number from some type of dating tool.. 2000 years earlier would be 93 AD. About 60 years after Christ is crucified. So there may be an element of the engineers being upset with worshiping a god in human form. Or they're smiting us for worship something other than them. Like I said- I have not fully developed this theory, but it is clear they are angry with us when Weyland and the others finally approach them. Lastly, I'm not sure "engineers" is the right word for them. They seem more military- they have the same DNA as we do but they are massive, muscular beings. Possibly, they were engineered to be military fighting machines. The right amount of the transforming black goo could do it.

@dayshifter. I somewhat agree with your comments (that earth could be a science experiment). And the reason the engineers would come back is to check on the terrarium they created. 2000 years ago, they discover that we are developing religion, government, proving that they themselves can live on earth. So they decided to clear out the natives and move in (just like we've done in so many instances in our colonizing past.)

Well it did bother me that we weren't worth even explaining their hate too. The engineer guy just started popping heads off and killing everyone. It was fitting that he got turned into a queen host lol. I read something from someone that there is a story in Persian i believe don't quote me mythology about the Annunaki creating mankind as a slave race while they did some stuff, because the race they had doing their dirty work rebelled. I don't remember the whole story, but it really hit home with me especially after watching the Prometheus for the first time. They better make another couple of movies, especially with Elizabeth Shaw putting in a Ridley like performance.

@Blambo i would disagree. If the engineers wanted to wipe out man kind why wouldn't they just make something meant for pure distraction, instead of a very complex black liquid material, that has a very large reason as to what it does and what it results in.

If you really want to understand a lot of the plot read revelations 13. Revelation  12:7   A war arose in heaven, Michael and his angels fought against the Dragon. The Dragon and his angels fought back but he was defeated. And there was no place left for them in heaven... Revelation 12:13 And when the Dragon found he was cast to the earth he pursued the woman who gave birth to the man child... Revelation 12:17  Then the Dragon became furious with the woman and went to make war with the remnant of her seed.... Look closely at the Xeno mural in the temple. Notice the wings.   In Alien 3 the Xeno is referred to as the Dragon. Could this be the answer to Shaws question "why do you hate us, why do you want to kill us?" Are the  original Xenos fallen Angels still jealous and furious at their Creators beloved creation man. Is this why they were sending a deadly cargo to earth 2000 years ago?Are the engineers worshipers of the beast, doing the will of their God? The Nephilim mentioned in genesis are giants.Offspring of fallen angels and daughters of men. Are these the engineers? Slaves of the God they worship?
