My Thoughts on the Engineer's Storyline

He drinks something black from a receptacle and soon he disintegrates and falls into the rapids. Under water, his body quickly disintegrates, spreading his genes and DNA in the flowing water.
The black substance or sticky goo is perhaps a life-creating dark matter that the Engineers have discovered or created. It is perhaps a powerful DNA accelerant, altering chemical of some sort. The aliens use it to create life on worlds that could harbor life like Earth when it was still in its primordial stages. But they know one must sacrifice himself to create life that would evolve into humans in their own image.
It is however also dangerous- if the goo is unleashed on the environment, any organism that comes in contact will quickly mutate. The squabbling scientists, Milburn and Fifield, got the brunt of its malevolence. Milburn is violently violated by the hammerpede and Fifield, in the ensuing struggle, fall flat on his face onto the black goo, turning him into a powerful zombie if you will.
The Engineers knew that if any of them is infected by the goo and if their seed is spread (thru sex), they could give birth to the facehuggers which will in turn give rise to the proto-xeno as seen in the climax. Shaw's partner, Holloway is infected by the goo, staged by the enigmatic android David and thru intercourse, the sterile Shaw becomes pregnant with a squid like monster. Perhaps the mural on the temple wall serves as a warning or reminder that the Engineers' home world was once destroyed by these monstrosities and any visitors or Engineer must exercise extreme caution.
Enter Prometheus- a space exploratory vessel, intended to reach the home world of the Engineers as shown on ancients cave walls from prehistoric human civilizations. Ominously named, the ship is named with a single purpose. Its benefactor, the old Weyland, desires immortality- he is afraid of death. He is determined to do whatever it takes to obtain any secrets the Gods may have and prolong his life. The android, played well by Michael Fassbender, is programmed to do just that.
David steals a canister filled with the black goo. He knew what it does and uses it to infect Holloway with the purpose of creating life, as if he has become a creator himself. Perhaps, Weyland wanted to know if the black goo could prolong his life. Maybe that is why he wanted David to 'try harder' and find out.
2000 years ago, the Engineers have realized their folly in revealing their home world's location to the humans. Although not clearly expressed on the ancient cave walls, but the temple presents a suitable clue if any intelligent human could decipher the writings on its walls (if they could travel there in the first place). What they showed is a probably a solar system, one of them being the moon that contained the black goo. This is where they store and harvest the substance. The giant head is probably a symbolic structure to show humans how it began, a religious structure if you will, for the humans to pay homage. But not to steal or desecrate.
David knew their location. It is etched on the walls or perhaps on the starmap from the bridge of the alien vessel.
Hence, they had to destroy Earth because the humans will one day, be advanced enough to meet them or more importanly, discovering the black goo for themselves. It will be too late to control to them by the time the humans have attained advanced space travel. They would have spread across the universe, populate everywhere, perhaps even discovering the black goo for themselves. Thus to control the destructive proto-Xenos or black goo contamination will prove difficult. The Engineers must destroy Earth once and for all, by infecting the planet with the black goo, turning its inhabitants into monsters, killing and destroying themselves.
But the most important reason that the humans must die can be the most damning. Throughout their history, the humans developed their own gods, forgetting their Creators despite numerous proofs of their existence (ancient cave walls). The concept of the human god of Christ, Allah and Yahweh is blasphemous to the Engineers. And 2000 years ago, they affirmed their belief by a so-called son of god. So mankind must die for their unbelief.
But before they could undertake the mission, a destructive black goo outbreak in the temple killed many of the Engineers. Only one Engineer remained in stasis. You may ask why the others did not arrive on the moon, to investigate the lost of contact. Perhaps they have sent probes but they too were lost. Perhaps their home world is wrought by the black goo chemical holocaust that many have gone into hiding or too weak to organize a proper search team.
Awakened by the android, the last remaining Engineer was asked to reveal the secret of immortality in a language so primitive yet understandable by the giant alien. Bemused, the Engineer discovered (by placing his hand on the David's head) that this synthetic life form had stolen one of the ampules containing the life-creating goo. The Engineer became furious by this that he gave the visitors a fatal beating.
The key to understanding the film is the initial imageries that the film imposes on the audience. The alien. The black substance. Prometheus, the ship which its actual mission is to steal from the gods.
Yes there were plot holes or scenes that evolve from poor screenwriting. Perhaps the theatrical cut proved too much that it leaves too many questions on the audience. We may yet see the director's cut on Blu-Ray and I am already ready to order it.
I may be wrong in my analysis but I feel it's the closest I can get to making the story plausible. Thanks for reading. Please share your thoughts.
