We get to see something interesting when we look at the umbilical cords in the movie. We see two of them. One is connected to Shaw when she initiates a self-directed cesarean section. It is connected from her body to the amniotic sac containing baby alien creature. This is correct biology (science) for mammals in which the cord provides the nutrient and waste exchange between the growing embryo and the mother. Second umbilical cord is seen when the Deacon xeno breaks free of his host Engineer body and slides onto the floor. He has a umbilical cord that is connected to a large yellow sac similar to a egg yolk. This would imply that the host body acts as a egg would while the fetus develops. Birds lay eggs which contain a nutrient yolk sac and the allantois that stores wastes and allows for improved gas exchange. There is no umbilical cord. This is incorrect biology (fiction). What does this suggest? Just a thought. I welcome yours :)

There's a lot of speculation about that. Some think that it is a placental sac. Others think that it is a nascent egg indicating possibly that the Deacon is a queen. In the artifacts among the conceptual artwork for Prometheus there is one drawing showing the Deacon walking toward the crashed Juggernaut. This is a suggestive image as it reminds us of the LV 426 derelict with its cargo hold of eggs and ruptured space jockey seated in his pilot's chair. Well, the Deacon just finished doing the same thing to the last engineer. So, perhaps....

I think it's unwise to assume that the "Deacon Xeno" would/should have similar fetal development with reguard to umbilical cords and what may or may not be a yolk, to earth mammals because well for one it's an alien...and also nothing else about its insemination or fetal growth or anything is similar to earth mammals.. more closely related to some sort of parasite. Plus it's a movie, not a science lecture :) doesn't have to be accurate.

@ Josiyah, I don't assume anything, but I do find it intriguing. :)

Also of note is the Sacrificial Engineer has a belly button. Thus he too had a cord.
