My thoughts on Prometheus

Saw Prometheus Friday at 11am, then had a 7 hour drive. Consequently, I had a lot of time to think about the movie. My first thought was that it was good...although not what I expected. After having time to take it in, I really loved it! It answered some questions, and presented some more that I am eager to have answered! The visuals, acting, story were magnificent. Music and pacing were somewhat awkward, but still better than most sci-fi movies these days. Now after 3 days, I find myself really wanting to see it again...which is a reaction I've only had to a handful of movies in my life (I'm 33). I sincerely think Prometheus is a sci-fi game changer, and a beginning to a new and wonderful film franchise. Prometheus is ahead of its time, and will after some time be recognized as a revolutionary and masterpiece film. That is all.

I think it's visually appealing but it leaves far too many blanks for the viewer to have a brainmelt over. Honestly I don't want to wait another 20 years before RS deigns to let the cat out of the bag. Iv'e always pondered the mystery of the derelict spacecraft and I still do considering it was hyperspaced off of LV232 (whatever the name) then wheres the original wreckage? Just curious about that one. Funny thing to me was that Shaw & David blasted off in Startrek TNG style to discover new life, new civilizations aboard the Engineers vessel. Considering Shaw only took a handful of provisions it'll be even more curious how she survives past 1-2 weeks worth of rations. Its not like theres a damn food replicator on board. I think the story is far simpler than we all think. The urns filled with black goo is really the Engineers sperm bank. They were trying to procreate but all of their hottest hoes got up and left em cuz their all evil dickheads. The surviving engineer that Weyland & company revived was just bummed that Shaw got preggy with someone elses baby. In his cryotube he'd been watching a repeating pirated copy of Girl with the Dragon Tattoo for 2000 years and wanted to get some play off of her. Thats why he initially killed everyone but her.

I have seen it twice, and after doing so have realized that Ridley has left us with a LOT of questions that this particular movie does not answer. In fact, so much so that I'm certain the casual viewer doesn't have a clue that there are questions unanswered. Who is the "Sacrificial" Engineer? What is it exactly that Peter Weyland is looking for? What is David really showing Dr. Holloway when he infects him? Why does David know how to work the Engineer's ships so easily? Why does Fiffe come back to life the way he does? Why does David want to see Weyland dead? What does David actually say to the Engineer? Here's a kicker. Is Dr. Shaw the latest version of Weyland's AI? David reads her dreams (but nobody else's) and twice they are attempting to transmit them but there is no response. Transmit them to who? She cannot have children and David is passingly impressed with her survival skills. On the site http://www.youtube.com/prometheus6812 there are a number of videos. One is of Dr. Shaw sending a broadcast to Peter Weyland in April of 2079. We first see Dr. Shaw in the movie in 2089. Like the replicant in Blade Runner, it feels like Shaw is advanced AI but doesn't know it herself. There is a two year gap between the Irish finding and Prometheus leaving for LV-233....which of course is not LV-426. I am certain there is much we will learn in the years previous to 2089 and to the years following 2093.....

I hear ya. I've seen it twice already. That's something I haven't done since.....honestly I can't remember the last time I saw a movie in the theater twice. I think I may have done so with Star Wars Episode I when I was still in my denial stage of how bad it sucked. I highly reccomend seeing it for the second time. Very small details that I missed, especially about the urns/black goo/vials inside the urns, becomes crystal clear.

The sacrificial engineer is just the way the aliens seeded life thru the galaxy. He basically takes one for the team then lets his dna form the primordial soup on the planet to develop life in millions of years. Weyland was looking for a way to keep from dying. He was a trillionaire businessman that basically wanted to find a way to live forever. He was eccentric enough to invest money in the two scientists that said they thought they knew how to find the aliens that started life on earth. He figured if they could start life they probably knew how to keep him from dying. David could control the engineers ship because he could read their language and watched the video on how the pilot flew the ship. An advanced vessel would probably practically fly itself for the most part. Fiffe didnt get killed by the worm he just got burned by the acid and fell face down in the goo. David probably wants to see Weyland dead for creating him. I imagine it would kinda suck to know you cant every really be human with no soul (Weylands' words) and will live forever. Sorta like being a vampire I suppose. David probably told the engineer what Weyland asked him to. The engineers were most likely military personnel of the alien race working at a WMD facility, all the cannisters were basically cans of bioweapons. They basically had a mission to go and wipe out humanity most likely because it was either the next stage in their evolution plan for humanity or the engineers saw that humanity had developed enough to be a threat to their existence. (my personal belief) I've read other theories on the net with things like Jesus was actually one of the engineers sent back to restore purity to humanity and when humanity killed him it basically was the sign that humans werent ready and needed to be scrapped, hence the wipe out the earth plan.

you also have to look at it from the perspective of the engineers being a super advanced civilization thats advanced enough to have genetic research plans that spans millions of years. The engineers race probably kept tabs on all the races they seeded thru the galaxy and when the time was right actually brought that race into the fold. Which would explain how the ancient human civilizations had contact with them and also ties into the Jesus theory. (At the time of Jesus they figured humanity had advanced enough to hear the the truth but humanity killed him which proved humans needed to be scrapped hence the WMD plan. Just so happens the WMDs got out of control and wiped the mission out. In the movie when they carbon date the head its 2000 years old which would make the ill-fated mission to earth to drop the WMDs coincide with the crucifixion of Jesus) http://www.unleashthefanboy.com/movies/prometheus-god-and-my-boy-jesus-christ/13945

The explanations from oflow seem to simplify the story dramatically, which I think takes us in the wrong direction. The producers of this film have spent a great deal of time creating the back story to this movie and the ones that will follow. The story being told here is not for the casual movie goer. There is a lot going on here. 1. To seed life in the primordial, u simply need to bring the building blocks and drop it off. Why sacrifice an Engineer for something to take place millions or billions of years later. I'm not seeing where there is any indication of that at all. 2. Yes, Weyland thinks the engineers can give him the ability to cheat death, but why does he think that? There is more to it than just they have superior tech and therefore they will bestow it upon whoever shows up on their doorstep. He is clearly looking for something specific, and he believes its on LV-233. 3. David knows how to manipulate the pyramid from the second he walks into it. This knowledge cannot possibly come from some DVD or hallogramm he watched. How would they know. Surmising what a pre-sumarian language might be is one thing, knowing the writing and the exact move strokes to open the doors is somethng else. He has knowledge that we are not privy to yet. 4. Acid in the face. Fiffe is pretty dead, and certainly should not come back as super human. There is something going on here. 5. It is doubtful to me that David tells the engineer what Weyland thinks he does. Hence, its in a language we do not understand, thus we do not really understand the engineer's reaction to what was said. I could go on and on, but I don't want to post too long a thought. Thing is, this movie was made with a lot of thought put into it. If u find the simple explanation;;;or worse yet, guess at the explanations...I think you'll miss what's really going on. Like Syphonox said, Ridley Scott and the producers of this film are changing the rules, and changing them for the better. For the much better. It has been decades since I've been so intrigued by the story at hand and how its being delivered....

Two lines I thought were important into possible reasons why the Engineers wanted to destroy mankind (albeit one of the lines isn't in the actual film itself) which relates to Man striving to become God-like: "..why they even made us in the first place" "why do you think your people made me?" "we made you because we could" http://youtu.be/jRa_xmJ4zXg "we are the Gods now" http://youtu.be/lpYUW0ekPSA "In the Western classical tradition, Prometheus became a figure who represented human striving, particularly the quest for scientific knowledge, and the risk of overreaching or unintended consequences. In particular, he was regarded in the Romantic era as embodying the lone genius whose efforts to improve human existence could also result in tragedy: Mary Shelley, for instance, gave The Modern Prometheus as the subtitle to her novel Frankenstein (1818)." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prometheus
