Dark City had ALL i expect from a perfect sci-fi plot.
- believable characters
- good original story and development
- superb, surprising, disturbing "breakup"
- leaves you satisfied when lights go on
Can all these attributs also be attached to Prometheus?

Dark city is a very nice LITTLE movie but with his shares of flaws
- the enemies are surely not original
- the protagonist is meh .
- there are many cliches
- of sci fi there is really little
- the final duel is silly
Is better to compare Prometheus with more similar movies like Pandorum ( great script that one ) or Sunshine ( better crew chemistry )

I agree with Frantz although I think there's plenty of science fiction in 'Dark City' (aliens, telekinetics, space ship, implanting memories).
I really liked 'Dark City', but I would struggle to compare it to 'Prometheus'.
I think they both stand alone in terms of original ideas (well, as original as you can be these days).

But which one TOUCHED you more and SATISFIED you more?
Other words - if you have not seen both movies at all, and you would have to pick ONE OF THEM up and take them to a lonely island, which one would you take with you?
Means - WHICH ONE WAS ALL IN ALL THE BETTER MOVIE, damn! haha

Can't answer that one yet. I've seen 'Dark City' a few dozen times and 'Prometheus' only once (that will become twice this Saturday).

I love Dark City. Definitely one of my favorite sci-fi films. Hell, one of my favorite films, period. But if I could only take one to an island it would be Prometheus hands down. They're both brilliant.
And talk about a difference between theatrical and directors cut. IMO Dark City's DC is in the top 3 right next to Kingdom of Heaven and Blade Runner in terms of actually adding substance to the film instead of more gore or longer scenes.

This is a hard case to compare. DARK CITY is one of my favorite movies of all time (I don't joke, I own three different versions of the film, DVD, Director's Cut DVD, and the Blu-Ray), but I can't compare it to PROMETHEUS, and you almost can't compare it in the terms y've described.
I will grant believable HUMAN characters:
- A main character with amnesia
- A hard boiled detective who's lost his faith and his partner
- A doctor who is apart of the creature's "vichey" regime but longs to find a way to change his and humanities fate
- and a very seductive Jennifer Connelly
The MacGffin is Shell Beach and works as a driving force behind unravelling everything implanted by the creatures.
Hell, the movie is very well done...except for the ending which was silly and the telekenetic brawl comes off as slightly cheesy nowadays -shrug-
Now whether or not its better than PROMETHEUS? That's a matter of opinion in terms of the definitions you've provided.
PROMETHEUS is an original story with it's development based on several dozen published materials within the "para-science" community, and is based on several versions of the creationist mythology.
The rest of the Xenobiology and plot devices are based on the original script for ALIEN in 1976, only they can be fully realized with the further advancements in special effects.
I'm not sure what you meant by "breakup." If you're referring to "sh** hitting the fan," than neither Movies accomplish this. Dark City begins to breakdown completely after its "big reveal"(I won't spoil it for those who haven't seen it), and degenerates into a Deus Ex Machina feel. The very last scene itself makes very little sense as to how the heck the entire ship functions after the showdown, nor how far out the atmosphere extends, there are no clouds due to a lack of condensed H20 and blah blah blah. There's just as many unanswered questions in Dark City as there are in PROMETHEUS.
Now, in terms of being satisfied when the lights go on? A big hell yea to BOTH movies. As a matter of fact I've been completely consumed with PROMETHEUS since Friday and I get my Art Book today so I'm ready for that as well! Also, its a part of my second favorite film franchise so it gets a bump on that alone.
As for Dark City, it's something I watch every so often and enjoy immensely every time I do. However, its compact, and when its done, I don't sit back and think of the ramifications of what I just watched in terms of Mythology, Theology, Cinema making, Film Scoring (I went to college for film scoring btw so these things matter to me lol), Script Concept and the revelations in to a mythology I've been following for 20 years.
Dark City, as much as I love it, doesn't do that for me. It's just quality entertainment that I enjoy and get a good inside chuckle from because I know that The Matrix ripped it off haha.

Dark City is the better film although I would not classify it as sci-fi, at least not your standard science fiction anyway. The film has a more horror/noir feel to it all the way up until the very end.
