MemberOvomorphJun-15-2012 7:35 AMi suppose it depends if you judge films by their box office takings.
also what do you mean by "make it" . does that mean break even? how much did the movie cost to produce?

Drakeequation
MemberOvomorphJun-15-2012 7:41 AM@fluke he means that the movie may be considered a flop if it doesn't break at least 250 million worldwide as the production budget (120 million) combined with the massive marketing campaign most likely pushed the costs well above 200 million. Films usually must earn 3X their production budget at the box office to be profitable (4.5X when it comes to total gross which includes box office, bluray/dvd, and licensing deals). So to be considered successful by studio standards it should earn about 360 million worldwide. If it flops at the box office you can probably forget about a sequel.

Worldwide Sales as of 2 days ago: $158,069,945 which means it's just got back its production budget and a bit of its marketing budget.
2013 sci-fi horror novels 'Custodian' and 'Tandem' available from Amazon, B&N, iTunes etc...

MemberOvomorphJun-15-2012 8:04 AMcool thanks for the info. i do want to see a sequel so hope it does it.

MemberOvomorphJun-15-2012 8:17 AMlet it flop. I hope Scott is alarmed to do A FINE BLUE RAY FINAL CUT that deserves his name. We know he can. That would be a nice DVD sale I BET.

MemberOvomorphJun-15-2012 8:25 AM@Kane77
I doubt a Blue-Ray final cut will make this film anymore than what it is now? Blade-Runner final cut is only revered because it reinstated the better ending (the original is beyond an abomination and shows what happens when studio execs consider themselves 'artists'). But the Alien directors cut? It's ok. But it's not better than the original per se? The original works fine how it is.
Perhaps the additional half hour of cut Prometheus scenes will flesh the film out and give it more room to breathe, but it won't contain any of the answers people on this board are rabidly looking for.
And like Drakequation points out: if it doesn't recoup we will NOT see a sequel. So we'll never get any answers.

MemberOvomorphJun-15-2012 8:38 AMPeople, people, people...
Prometheus is NOT a flop by any definition of the word!
It's held up well against a sequel to a popular kids film, Madagascar 3. A rated R film holding its own in the number two spot is nothing to sneeze at. NO WAY was Prometheus ever going to take the Number One spot ahead of Madagascar. Too many kids out of school going to the movies and you can't compare the audiences. The audience for Prometheus was always going to be smaller. So, no surprises there. Even so, I don't understand why people are surprised by these numbers. It has NOTHING to do with the quality of the film.
I'm sure the suits at Fox knew Prometheus would not do Madagascar numbers...and I'm sure they are happy with how it's doing. If anything, they should blame themselves for the release date they picked.
Don't take my word for it though...here's the box office numbers (Granted, these are US numbers but the US market is still the determining factor with regard to whether there will be a sequel, not China, the UK or Timbuktu):

Prometheus is doing well in the states ($65,000,000) so far compared to the UK's (£12,000,000). And the budget of $120 million has been recouped to the tune of $150 million and counting.
But (as referenced above) a film generally needs to make twice its budget to be branded as a 'financial' success. And unless the amount of people seeing 'Prometheus' picks up staggeringly in the next week or so then a sequel might not be in the bag.
So, you're right: the UK isn't the determining factor. But the UK, plus China, plus Timbuktu, plus Narnia, plus every other market? Yeah. Might just have to be.
It's gonna be a group effort.
EVERYBODY DIG IN!!!

MemberOvomorphJun-15-2012 9:34 AM@Freespirit - Yes, I forgot to mention the current total in which I did at another thread.
The point I was making is that the UK receipts have the highest tallies and since you guys are seeing the movie like 8 times in a row lol. It should hit 250 million easily.
Remember, when you pay for the ticket; half goes to the movie theater that is why it has to make double of its budget plus marketing.
I did not know there are much more foreign markets but I thought the only one to come close to the UK is Germany.
When I was stationed in Germany last year; I loved those movie theaters. They served beer and better nachos than here in the states.

MemberOvomorphJun-15-2012 9:35 AMLOL@Brightonrock regarding "Narnia"...HAHAHA!!!
Well, I think the international market as outlined by Kane77 above WILL have a huge impact! It's good to see there are so many markets remaining to experience this film. I would guess this would do well in Europe and in Japan -- we'll see.
Even so, I think it's doing very well. I would think a sequel is a foregone conclusion at this point...
Oh, and I've only seen it twice...but both times 3D IMAX. Yes, we should all see it multiple times...why not?
I look at it as supporting Ridley! LOL!!

Custodian
MemberOvomorphJun-15-2012 10:24 AMThey'll add a second or third film to this 'franchise' (shudders) as I heard it called by Lindelof.
I 'know' Alien or Predator is a franchise, but Prometheus isn't YET.
God, I hope (whoever gets the job) can write the wrongs, or at least convincingly paste over the cracks so no one'll notice on first viewing; I mean nothing that anyone does will survive a serious Alien-bound surveyor's report right?

This, your paragraph - is a thing of beauty.

Forever War
MemberOvomorphJun-15-2012 12:21 PMIt's got a long way to go still in the theaters...a long summer ahead...premature here, but its looking good for what it is....the R is a factor which also separates it in a good way, depending on how one looks at it

Juxtapose
MemberOvomorphJun-15-2012 1:36 PM....a sequel is an inevitability....lesser movies has had sequels and Prometheus is doing extremely well right now......sure it's not breaking any records....no R rated movie ever has.....so chillax we will get our sequel without any doubt....just not sure if ridley will direct it?....i will be very happy with Cameron or perhaps a collaboration between the 2....that would be sooooo.... epic !
