CULT

Ok. I said I wouldn't do this, but here goes. First and foremost there's not much that can be added to the conversation in regards to critiquing this film that hasn't been hashed and rehashed before. Personally, any discussion about PROMETHEUS takes on a more therapeutic role. Seriously. Would my objective opinion be any different had I not tracked down and watched every %#*!&@ trailer? Am I trying to find any reason whatsoever to justify wanting to like this film? If I had it all to do over again, would it be any different? Man, these are big questions!   Seriously, I'm just looking for something to make some sense. Truth be told, I suspect that for me at the ripe age of 45 I may need to find other obsessions to invest my time (NECA SJ does look pretty cool!). Those of us inducted into this 'cult of A L I E N' in early our prepubescents don't seem have much choice in the matter.. and so it seems we all must suffer...  So, when's the BLADE RUNNER REDUX site launching? See ya'll there.. ps. Indulge me one Q & A is that LV-426 in proximity of LV-223? I might just sleep a little better... MEM

They are approx 10 light years away by my calculations. LV 426 is about 4.5 light years further from Earth. Yes, Ridley Scott has written a devious detailed story, that may only be a gripping experience for people who cannot handle something that has no sense, if it gives every indication that it SHOULD. Have you ever seen "Cow Tools" by Gary Larson? I think another comparison might be Lost... everyone keeps mentioning it, but it's a TV show, and I have no TV... so unable to comment. Some people are reading up on all types of mythology in MASSIVE detail... Really the surface detail will do, enough to spot why you are being teased. The film is full of red herrings, and almost nothing is conclusive. You can watch to the end and think "Wow, the believer was right, there is a god somewhere and she can fly off and find it" - These people need to remember classic sci-fi on this ... It is also possible to take a completely skeptical look and arrive at the conclusion.... "Wow, she got people killed for nothing, including one which would have answered ALL her questions, and now she's seeking out some very bad people who probably care little about her need to know, and even less about philosophical debates" In every scene there is misdirection and multiple interpretations. It's a trap for the curious. It's a FACEHUGGER of a film. It is a bit of a shock to the system, it's uncomfortable. It plants a seed of a puzzle in you, which broke out, and now, your here, on the internet 'still searching'. Personally, I think it's very clever in many ways, make a film that perplexes people, but put in the draw of Ridley Scott visuals great acting and the backdrop of the popular Alien universe... and then convulse their minds. They will spend ages on the little puzzles of so many 'plot holes and unanswered questions' before it dawns on them. The message of the film is be careful about jumping to unfounded conclusions. Either way you interpret the end, that is ultimately the cause of death for 15 people in this film.

@mem, I am 46 so I can share in your frustration that what we experienced as early teenagers is no longer the same when it comes to quality of story. In my last thread, I posted the script of the original Alien aka Star Beast and can see why they approved this trash. http://www.dailyscript.com/scripts/alien_early.html The people who like this are justifying its vagueness in tones and coming up with so many off the wall reasons on how this story synchs with the rest of the Quadrilogy. I thought the Star Trekkies were eggheads but these people take the cake lol Besides being geeks; they sound very naive and immature.

I dont know if we can call people immature for difference of oppinion.... Alien never had a massive plot, i mean Aliens plot was more detailed... But the way the Alien plot was executed was pure class, tense and suspense. With the way technology and effects move on and how the world as evolved since the earlier days of film, what shocked people in 60's and 70's does not have the effect that it does now. I remember seeing Star Wars and the effects was fantastic, but the younger people (post 1990 and especially 2000+) when they see movies like say the Star Wars Prequel effects, Transformers effects and Avatars they are not as impressed with such advancements as the older generations who saw Advancements from movies like 2001, through to Alien, to Terminator to Predator and Total Recall. I guess they cant apreciate the advances, just like those born to play in the PS2 and onwards generations cant grasp the changes from next generation to the next in Video games. Not like those who had humble ZX Spectrums and Atari 2600 to 8 Bit NES, to 16 bit SNES etc etc, we saw a dramatic change in the quality of visuals from each Generation... Those born into the lattest Generation seem to not be able to see the differences in advancements in Special Effects and Visuals. The DR Whos we old ones, saw how each Dr Came and the visual effects improved over time even though low budget.... The newer higher budget Dr Who fans some cant seem to apreicate how things was years ago.... They would see a old Dr Who and laugh and think it was crap..... not knowing that the Technolgies that the year 2000+ brought was not available back in those days.

What I meant by immature is that many of the positive fans sound like they are between 15-19 years of age (meaning they interpret things from a different "way out there" perspective) and make sense out of things that dont make sense but yes there are some kids out there who loved this film who are 35 and older lol

I think the people praising the film are doing so because they are making order out of chaos. This is a disjointed sloppy film and was made with just enough pretentiousness to appear as a deep high "brow" film instead of the cheap commercial sequel bait that it really is. It does not respect the intelligence of the audience and so relies on people to buy into the fact that just because the story is incoherent and all over the place means that it must be philosophical and intellectually engaging.
