Are engineers a friendly race

Is the Engineer in the beginning forced to sacrifice himself on earth for a higher being? Are they thiefs that stole the secrets of life from another race in the galaxy? Maybe they aren't creators, but space pirates that do hideous things to other life. They remind me of a game called Metroid on Nintendo computer consoles.

I think that good and evil are a matter of perspective...to me, the Engineers appear to be indifferent or impersonal to humans until some type of behavior on the part of the humans initiates a response from the Engineers. Again, whether its a good response or a bad one depends on perspective.
I dont see enough in the film to answer your other questions, I wish I did but I dont...what do you think? What happens in that game?

One question: Are we a friendly or a hostile race?
I think they might be like us, can be friendly but also be hostile.
I mean look how violent mankind's history has been. How many
wars we fought and how often we see robbery, rapes, murder etc.?
Are we better than them?
I don't think so.
Maybe mankind has been even more violent than the engineers so
that they planned to wipe us out and replace by something else.
The xenomorph is even more violent but they usually don't fight
each other. Remember that the xenomorph in Alien Resurrection
already had human DNA from Ripley mixed when she got cloned.

I don't think that what we are seeing in Prometheus is indicative of the "Engineering race". We see what we presume to be an engineer sacrificing his body to seed life on a planet, not necessarily Earth. That life ended up producing some very nasty dinosaurs way before mammals came on the scene and we've only been civil, arguably, for about the last few decades (debatable what with genocide still happening as we speak).
What we perceived to have been "engineers" could be some race of the Engineers that is of the lowest caste. Drones, workers, cloned unichs (sp)? I think that most of your questions will be answered in the sequel, however, I believe that the engineering race is a clever portrayal of US.

The Engineers seemed hostile because of their actions in the movie, but when it's put into context it's harder to tell. They created humans, and later they planned to destroy them. Naturally, the final engineer wouldn't drop all hostility because a robot asked him to give this old guy eternal life. He just continued what had been started and interrupted a long time ago.
Let's imagine that we created all of these androids, and then they did something that made us very angry, so we decide to wipe them out. A lot of time passes, and then suddenly, an android rouses you from your sleep and asks you to do it a favor. Would you do it? Or would you just carry out your prior plans to get rid of them?
We don't know enough to decide yet. I think we'll definitely get an answer when the sequel comes out, though.
