The Six Typical 'Prometheus' Reactions: Which Are You?

"The Extremists "THAT WAS A PERFECT MOVIE! MIND BLOWN! SHUT UP IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT!" Here are your hardcore "Prometheus" fanboys. They waited patiently for this movie to come out, and when it did, they were never the same. The message spoke to them personally and echoes all of their own existential questions. If you question the film's quality, you are calling into question everything that the fanboy has ever felt, loved, and dreamt. If you don't get it, it's probably just because you're stupid, and weren't paying close enough attention. "THAT WAS AN AWFUL MOVIE! TIME WASTED! SHUT UP IF YOU LIKE IT!" This is where you'll find many of your extremist "Alien" fans. Ridley Scott's original outer space saga is buried deep within the hearts and minds of this collective and any new movie that tries to replicate, comment on or expand upon "Alien" is an affront to that film. To them, if you love "Prometheus," it's because you're fooling yourself with your emotional responses. This group may also send tweets to Damon Lindelof, blaming him for the whole ordeal, but most of that hate will be reserved for a later group. The Moderates "Things like plot specifics and characters details don't matter as much when the ideas are this big." Now we're getting into more sensible, moderate territory. These fans have thought about it more than gut reactionary groups above. "Prometheus" is not without its flaws, otherwise it wouldn't be divisive, but the damage done by exploring the larger themes is minimal. This group can admit that characters may have not gotten as much screen time, but they were there to serve a much larger, grander purpose. For them, the idea of a big, ambitious sci-fi movie is more than enough entertainment. "The ideas are big and ambitious but incomplete and get in the way of everything else." This group shares many things in common with the demo above, but the level of satisfaction with the mysteries of "Prometheus" is where they split. If the questions aren't enough to pacify them, the other problems in the movie are going to stick out more prominently. For them, posing a question should be followed by an answer. Asking it isn't enough, and that's where "Prometheus" really falls short for them. Close, Ridley, but no cigar. The "Lost" Fans "Damon Lindelof can do no wrong. This is perfect." An entire category of "Prometheus" reactions rests solely on how one felt about the "Lost" series finale. Those who loved it without being able to explain why they loved it can say the same about "Prometheus." Their love of and trust for Lindelof knows no bounds, so to reject anything he's attached to would betray the six years they spent watching a bunch of folks try to get off an island. "Damon Lindelof has a personal vendetta against me and everything I love." These fans forget that anyone else but Lindelof was involved in the making of "Prometheus." The ending of "Lost" left them feeling abandoned, and they never found out why the numbers caused bad luck. So because of that "Prometheus" had to suck, and when it did suck, they were going to personally tell Lindelof over Twitter. That will show him!" :) You see why I included a fan boy conflict in this skit. I tried to see it as a standalone film on first viewing, but I think a perceived turn towards mythology made me so annoyed, that I disliked it. I wasn't expecting Aliens, but I was expecting it to be set in a universe without hints of supernatural intervention. After I thought about it for a while, and realised it was a bit of a set up, I think I'm in the morderate camp. I think it's a novel twist, but that may be just because I haven't seen LOST.

It isn't perfect by any means; neither was "Alien." I think people will be talking about it for a very long time, assuming Scott doesn't supply us with too many direct answers in the sequel......and I don't expect him to. That would run counter to the implicit message of the movie.

I guess I would fall as a moderate with a twist... The only thing I was disappointed with in Prometheus was the lack of character depth and fleshing out. The stupidity of the biologist and geologist - what a waste of something that could have been really cool. The end where they took off was a bit...quick...does that make sense? To me it just seemed like it lacked in the editing dept more than the writing dept like everyone on these boards seem to point to. The whole movie made sense from start to finish AFTER you think about it and realize the nuggets and bread crumbs that were there. However, it didn't make a lot of sense because of the lack of suspense or getting attached to the characters because of the way it was edited, not written. The absolute hate for Lindelof is f%@&ing absurd folks!!!! How can you say anything about how bad of a writer he was for Lost then claim you never watched it LOL!!!! Man, this guy did EXACTLY what RS wanted him to do! I don't think DL wrote PROMETHEUS, met RS and said "have I got an idea for YOU!" HAHAHAHAHA! Try it the other way around! You can hate whoever you want without any reason...I don't care. But obviously, there are a bunch of very influential people on here that obviously want a witch hunt without paying attention to who to blame for a movie they don't like. If anyone wants to know how bad editing can hurt a film, I had the luxury of seeing a previous edit of Star Wars years ago...awful. It felt like I was watching a totally different movie that went absolutely nowhere! When I saw Prometheus I thought to myself "this has potential, but doesn't seem all there". I chalk it up to the editing. Just my thought.

I'm not sure wich one I fall into. I neither love it or hate it, but I'm not indiferent either. I watched it with low expectations, found some oddities in the screenwriting/acting department, loved the aesthetics, was ok for most of the flick. I'm way too rational to just sit back and enjoy the melodrama. I have this weird habit of deconstructing the flicks to their basics.

I’m more of “moderate Alien fan”. I love sci-fi. Absolutely adore 2001: A Space Odyssey. I’m a fan of Duncan Jones’s Moon. Blade Runner is one of the best films in history. I kind of expected “Alien meets Blade Runner with A Space Odyssey twist”. Prometheus felt hollow. I mean known philosophical questions are asked, but no effort is made to explore their interconnectedness. No logic is being employed to make the feeling of the plot being a part of higher (godly?) determination. My taste buds were watered when I have seen the graphic depiction of sentient Panspermia. I thought I shall be presented with a kind of Hyperion Cantos variation. My expectation where shattered when Hollywood part began – the plot line took me to see a bunch of redshirt cannon fodder doing crazy thing in order to die, than moved to yellowshirt ladies being squashed by a enormous donut and then ended the absurdity with a facial rape of a giant humanoid o_O Somehow I cannot care less where the stapled lady high on painkillers may have gone with the other donut. :-) Even the first Alien has been more thought over and logical than at first such promissing Prometheus. Awesome ideas where wasted to convince the sponsors to provide the vast budget. I guess Prometheus goes to the same shelf as Starship Troopers in my collection.

I'm a mix of #1 and #5. I loved the Engineers and the ideas presented in this movie and Lost is my #2 favorite all time show (X-Files #1). I love movies that are open ended and don't explain everything because they leave room for personal interpretations and discussion, making for a more personalized experience, in my opinion!

I am between a #1 and a #3. I loved the movie for my own personal reasons, but I won't ever say "SHUT UP IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT!" To each their own....
