Ok - THE OPENING SEQUENCE - Was it earth, cant be sure, what if we are seeing the Engineers starting a new experiment in the present which would be why we are to be eliminated as the test on earth went wrong. Ok - 2000 YEARS AGO - the most obvious significant event at that time to me would be the birth of Jesus Christ. Now im not getting into the whole idea of did he exist or is christianity rel or whatever but what if his emergence signified a problem for the engineers or a culmination of the experiment and they rolled back the stone and they were the angels....... and demons. I always liked the idea of stargate with Aliens as God/s but often felt that the really meaty ideas could be found in the active religions. Oh and why do people try to imbue Aliens with human emotions and behavior. For all we know the dude at the beginning was buzzing his head off/ happy as a pig in S%^t/ having sex with a planets ecosystem???

When adding releigion to the mix, it takes us into another journey. We already have enough to consider and not enough answers to sooth us. Watching supeiror life forms going abou their business is not as easy to understand as one thinks

The Artbook of the film which I have states on page 28 to the 'dawn of time on earth' so yeh it must be earth. Also - 1. the landscapes shots at the beginning are on earth. 2. The dna scene - the blood is red and is a combination of engineer dna and water (we are like what 80 to 90% water?) 3. The whole film refers to the engineers being our makers. So all in all I dont see how people have been boggled by it. Its kind of loud and clear. I got it straight away when I first saw the film and didnt bother questioning it further Also concerning the engineer doing the sacrifice, if you look at both the artbook and the revealed alternate version of the scene involving an elder engineer, the whole birth of life on earth seemed to be a planned ritual and the engineer was either chosen or volunteered for the job.

2000 years ago was the date Shaw calculated for the death of the space jockey. Why do you ascribe some other importance to it? Do you also then ascribe some importance to the date of all the other visits? What was going on in Hawai'i in 680 CE then? Why assume that the Space Jockey schedule is related to ours? Maybe they just ran out of lab rats and were coming down to fetch some more. And Chris, how do you know those landscapes are meant to be Earth (We know it was shot in Iceland of course, which btw had not risen up from the ocean floor in primordial Earth. ) The DNA montage... same place as scene 1? same place as scene 3 (Earth) ? Why no zoom in from space to show our familiar moon, or some continents? Why are the only links from scene 1 to the Scottish scene, that one scene follows another, and a subliminal suggestion of continuity? The whole film refers to the engineers being our makers? Shaw, Holloway and Weyland do. Does that make them right? Milburn and Fifield strongly disagree, but they were first to die. Does that make them wrong? It's always worth questioning things further, especially in a mystery plot.

The opening sequence shows the engineer standing under a disk-shaped ship. On LV-223 the ship we see mapped out is C-shaped. So it is highly unlikely that the opening sequence was 2,000 years ago (or even on Earth)

"Oh and why do people try to imbue Aliens with human emotions and behavior. For all we know the dude at the beginning was buzzing his head off/ happy as a pig in S%^t/ having sex with a planets ecosystem???" Exactly, just like people attributing human emotions/feelings to their pets, especially dogs and cats. I guess that's just our nature, to familiarize so that we're not uncomfortable with the unknown. Think of death. There being absolutely nothing when we die is uncomprehending for us, hence religion and a multitude of various theories, beliefs, etc... We NEED to believe in something and attribute it to everything around us or we're lost in the chaos that life can be...

I used to wonder if the opening scene was Earth until I saw two interviews where people working on the film called it Earth. And why do people think the whole Jesus situation is so different that it triggered the Engineers to destroy us? There have been religions, gods, and dominant civilizations throughout history. The Engineers visited us many times and didn't destroy us. Maybe they weren't coming to Earth to detroy us. Maybe it was just another trip until they realized David's head didn't have a brain in it. Ridley Scott wants us to feel what it's like to be a tool...and replicant...a slave.

BTW, good replies to this topic. I like all of the points. Engineer Xeno: Where did you get the Artbook? Did you buy it somewhere? I want one! The writers picked Hawaii because there is something going on around that time that is very relevant. All of the archeological sites and dates have it.
