hi there mate:
Before posting, please do a search on the Forum Threads. The subject of Fossilization/mumification of the SJ in Alien has been already discussed:
an example:

Welcome to the forums,
Yes this has been discussed many, many times...
and each time the same point comes up - for fossilization to occur the remains have to be placed between layers of sedimentary rock, which the dead Engineer in Alien wasn't - thus no fossilization.
please, in future, use the search bar.

Yes under the right conditions. The actual onset is very quick, or else every skeleton would be completely gone in a matter of months, years or decades. But the process itself continues until all the carbon 14 is gone and replaced by carbon 12. Very little other sediment to leech carbon 14 from here.
To be fossilized/petrified/preserved you need almost perfect or ideal conditions, sediments, burial, and usually a sudden incident, landslide, or a volcanic eruption creating vitrified glass layers etc. that preserves the thing all in the context it was left. Artifacts are actually a lot more rare than most people think because of how perfect things have to be. Something may start the process but ultimately end up being disturbed by geological processes and will start to deteriorate before completely fossilizing. That's why it's not fossilized, the gases would have eventually worn away at it before it got a chance to fossilize. The best it could be is mummified.
There is something to be said for how the alien genetics work by breaking things down, creating something different from elements, rewriting things and recombining them, and the idea that death or deterioration is inevitable unless you allow something to completely change you at a molecular level. What most people don't know is even though these things appear hard on the surface. The bonds between carbon molecules are incredibly different. And under the surface are just waiting to be exposed to a lot of oxygen and moisture, but I'll have to work on that and how that applies to the outside layer of the mummy appearing fossilized later.
Look into what happens to mummies when they're unwrapped and exposed to air for the first time in 1000's of years without proper care being taken to inject, spray and use all sort of fluids and preservatives to prevent them from crumbling to dust before your very eyes in the presence of oxygen.
I can feel even more death and resurrection/mummy themes in my bones already...

Yes, it certanly makes you wonder whether-or-not the Space Jockies bio-suit (if the SJ is confirmed as a Bio Engineer and looks the same underneath as in Prometheus - part of the same race) was in some way breached in-flight during a particular point in the ships manuevering which caused 'him' to be exposed to the rigors of LV-426 and that is now what we see as a result of eons of direct exposure to the elemnts. Or, a breach occured to the chair suit and the ship was in-flight through space when it happened and the lone pilot was exposed to vacum - directly. There were things I read before about The Derilict ship when it was functional was openly exposed to the rigors of space all along during use by the pilot - hence the use for the suit and the Chair helmet.
He was exposed to the vacum of space and was immidiately flash frozen because of the temperature variations depending upon where exactly you are in space at the time of such an unfortunate incodent such as this to occur. Being closer to a star and exposed to space directly might have a slight temperature variation then say if you were out side of the edge of the galaxy and was floating through the icy depths of inter-stellar space. Added to that 'He' was probably irradiated as well, bombarded with cosmic rays and radiation of just about every description imaginable. Then, as a result, the ship drifted, got caught up in the gravity field of LV-426's Gas Giant planet and was sling-shot into the little planets atmosphere and finally came to rest where it eventually was to be found by the crew of the Nostromo.

@HyperNova
This sounds better than I could make up...and ties in the facts as we know them from the film...
Now if there were only other Engineers around,,it would be more plausible.
