Both films were excellent, although I prefer prometheus over alien, because to me it has way more meaning, and IMO we can relate to prometheus more..... So which do you prefer?

Most definitely Prometheus. Alien gets boring for me once the Space Jockey scene is over. Alien just lacks any semblance of depth but that's the problem with most horror movies. Once you've watched a horror movie twice it's no longer scary, so if being scary is all it had going for it then it loses it's entertainment value with each subsequent viewing. So when alien comes on tv I just watch the SJ scene and then change the channel because that was the only mystery left to it.

To be honest, I never liked Alien. It was way too slow and too boring.

alien, too many reasons to list on here. but to me those 2 movies are so different i don't see them as ones to compare to each other. i feel like it would be like having to choose and compare "cheers" to "married with children".

This is like The Thing 1982 vs The Thing 2011 or like the Star Wars trilogies.

Holy Batman as Ripley said in Aliens - "Did IQs drop sharply when I was away?" I know everyone is entitled to their own opinion but Prometheus is a darn, awful film that destroyed the franchise. Alien Resurrection is much better than it. What gave it some legs was the updated visuals and a cast that pulled people. But it is nowhere near the masterpiece of Alien. Is anyone that posted positive in this thread, an American that is over 25? I worked on movies, saw Alien in the theater when I was a kid. Saw the rest over the years. I am 46 now and everybody that I know said the movie was a mess and shambles. Sometimes, I cannot believe the opinions of the movie on this site. It is beyond me at times.

I have to go with Alien.I actually lived in a time before Alien was released.Science Fiction horror was a bit different until Alien came out. For example:Have you ever seen Captain Kirks fight on a deserted planet with the Gorn.Or that original black & white Twilight Zone episode were the Cafe owner has a third paper mache eye because he's from Pluto.....or The Fonzie and Captain Caveman Happy Hour?...Ok,maybe not that but the others are examples of Pre-Alien Science Fiction horror. When Alien was released it was causing people to faint...throw-up...leave the theatre...all three of these things were considered signs of a really good movie in the 1970's...really :)

I like both movies equally. I saw the age of 25 disappear a long time ago, by the way. Alien terrified me. Prometheus intrigued me.
The most terrifying fact about the universe is not that it is hostile but that it is indifferent

ALIEN ! But I still enjoyed Prometheus. However, I find that they are two completely different movies and I find it difficult to compare them.

I prefer Prometheus over Alien because of the pace was faster and you get to see something. Alien was good but a little slow and you didn't see the xeno pretty much.

I think both movies are good in their own way. I enjoyed them both, even though 'Alien' is no longer scary to me.

100% ALIEN!!! I know this is a prometheus forum so you will get some prometheus's people but Alien wipes the floor with prometheus for most people. Alien I find is more for older people - I did used to like aliens better than alien till I got to the age of about 20 I think it was...when I was younger I guess I didn't appreciate the finer points and most teenage boys just like action and violence (sorry to say but we do have bad taste and poor critique as teenagers on the whole - just look at the most popular films driven by young men's taste on the whole ) etc....

Alien. The acting was superb, the ambient was claustrophobic, the thing was just pretty well done. Prometheus has it's Highlights, but a lot of downsides as well. The only part IMHO Prometheus would eventually win is in the Aesthetics. But Alien also has them in a diferent way

Alien. Not because of more gore. Not because of yet another monster killing the rest of the cast. (Like The Thing, or Leviathan, etc..) But more because of the originality of the Space Jockey. The crew of the Nostromo didn't know who he was. They didn't know what happened to him prior to his death, or how he became the victim that they found. He was a never-before-seen enigma with a story to tell. The crew of the Nostromo would only find out what happened to him and why as the film played out. Alien made me wonder why Dallas and Lambert didn't consider that what they saw having happened to the Space Jockey- might happen to Kane. The face hugger had something down his throat... The Space Jockey had a hole made from inside in his chest. Why didn't the crew of the Nostromo take the evidence seen in the Space Jockey into consideration when Kane woke up- after having been attacked by an organism found near a previous victim? I agree with SpaceNik when he states that the Space Jockey was the most interesting part of Alien. But I observed that Prometheus was all over the place so much that it made a mockery of the mystery of the Space Jockey. 48 year old Chicagoan.

Before you bash and berate Alien remember that without it there would be no Prometheus. There would be no franchise with it's subsequent glimpses into an alternate universe that has absolutely no bearing on reality. These films are like a walk in a house of mirrors. Your perception is at times closer to recogniseable shapes and other times deformed beyond comprehension. They represent totally different styles. The dark lush elegance of Alien reset the bar in the industry for a melding of horror and science fiction. It's characters were fleshed out believable blokes that you could see yourself working beside, depending on and perhaps relating to. Prometheus instilled me with a near criminal dislike of a couple of the characters. You'd not have need a spider zombie to take them out, I would have done it back at the ship. No black goo infection needed. Fifield would have been dead period, Charlie better watch his back too. Saying that Alien doesn't scare you, it's not surprising. We outgrow a lot of the things we like as children, and eventually it dawns on you that movies are fiction, nothing you see is real and they lose their power to draw you in without a superior musical score, dialogue, set design and cohesion. Alien doesn't frighten me, it fascinates me. Has done so since the first time I saw it as a child. The alien was like some kind of cyberenhanced feline that toyed with the crew of the Nostromo like mice. It watched them, poked and prodded them. The space jockey literally was jaw dropping, it was nightmarish, and at the same time if you "GOT" it rather sad. Alone isolated, and ultimately overcome by it's environment despite obviously knowing the risks. The engineers, the potential was there for so much more than just a brute that starts bashing the crew of the Prometheus upon having his stasis interrupted. I might have liked to hear just how long that stasis was programmed to continue. SOMETHING, ANYTHING, rather than let me just press buttons until something happens. Ultimately the symbolism in both film is entirely subjective as it relies upon the perception of it's audience. The engineer is overcome by a product of it's technology infused with the genetic spirit of humanity. Prometheus oddly enough becomes a giant symbol for the danger of assumption, and presumption on the part of humanity. So while they are different, Alien stands alone, it didn't need any sequels to fill in details about the universe that Ripley lived in. I didn't wonder what her life was like when she made it back home, I was just relieved that someone had survived the encounter. You saw from sequels that the expectation as well as vision was distorted by each directors need to put his DNA into it. The military and gung ho attitudes that drenched Aliens, the return to a desolate claustrophobic darkness of A3. However you realised that you could never be truely frightened again because it was merely revisting a familiar territory. RS was quoted as saying he wanted to scare the living SH&T out of you with Prometheus. Nothing about the film did that, it's hard to create magic twice, I'm a diehard fan of the original Alien, I made the mistake of expecting something as epic when I saw Prometheus. Though visually Prom was amazing, I'd expect nothing less from a 21st century big budget project. In closing, Alien doesn't need a reboot, it would gain nothing from a reimagining, the performances, cinematography and finished product were as close to perfection as possible considering when it was produced and the technology available. It's remarkable and people are still talking about it.
