MemberOvomorphJul-31-2012 2:59 AMAn iconic movie from the 1970s burnished decades later with three prequels to flesh out the original story more. The Alien series? Nope, Star Wars.
Now I'm not into Star Wars (it was a bit dewy-eyed and optimistic for me but I watch them if they're on the telly if I happen upon them and I've got naff all else to do) but I remember the reactions to the original prequel Episode One. It divided opinion in much the same way as Prometheus has.
In the latter two prequels the critical praise got better as the story connected more with the original series of films and I think (if there are to be two more prequels to this series) that might be the way it goes here.
I hope there are two more that wind their way round to being more conventionally-relevant to the 1979 original because around the time of the Star Wars prequels I felt a bit left out because I wasn't really into the films.
Though it is probably safe to say that with movies in this series you probably won't have promotions on cereal boxes like you had with George Lucas' films!

MemberOvomorphJul-31-2012 5:25 AMHmmm star wars episode one was awful - worse than prometheus even! - I dont think it divided opinion it was more like most people hated it and only a few liked it!
Also prometheus is looking like its the start of a tangent - a separate story so the link up may be just a side line all the way through if any...

MemberOvomorphJul-31-2012 12:17 PMI can't handle the awesomeness of the prometheus series anymore. :P Let their be sequel, prequel and whatever. They destroyed one good concept.
Now AVP wins hands down.

MemberOvomorphJul-31-2012 7:06 PMyeah...i dont think what happened with the star wars prequels is happening with prometheus. The star wars prequels (episode 1 in particular) didnt divide the star wars fan base. The aforementioned film(s) united that fanbase into a solid ball of hate and rage directed at lucas. Prometheus has definitely shaken/splintered our fanbase, but more people think the film was a success than dont. As far as the prometheus series (if there is to be one) making its way back to alien...i think all the evidence at hand points to any future films moving even further away from alien. Id very much like to see more films made. Post prometheus, the cinematic canvas (as it relates to the "alien" franchise) is primed for fresh and creative work. As ive said before, i feel that prometheus functions as a creative enema for a franchise that was stagnating and eating itself from within (alien "insurrection" and the AVP trash (though i dont consider AVP canon). I really think any future films will bolster the validity of prometheus. Bring em on.
