As I've stated in other threads I'm so glad Scott decided to make what we see in Alien a suit instead of it being an exoskeleton. Monstrous aliens, like the xeno, have simply been done to death and are no longer interesting imo. They all look the same. It's all been done. Humanoid creatures that created us and hate us is so much more interesting imo. There are tons of new and interesting directions you can go with that. There's only so many things you could do with yet another strange alien that haven't been done before. The thing that had me worried the most before the film came out were the versions of upright, elephantine Sjs. Most looked simply laughable. Few looked decent. Below are some versions I was able to dig up on the net. Like I said, some are decent. However none are good enough to make me think they could be more interesting than the Engineers we know nor could Scott had have created a better story around them. Hats off to all the artists because the art is fantastic. The concept just works so much better as a suit and not a bioskeleton. IMO anyway. My favorite of those(if they weren't suits) would be the one with no legs. I like it a lot.

Am I the only one that was wandering why they are all so fat, also the one with no legs looks like he is taking a dump. @Engineering............. I agree with you, I think it being a suit is much more interesting. Not only for the reasons you mentioned but also because the Engineers being humanoid fits with them being our creator. In the Judeo Christian Bible God made humans in his own image. And also the look of the Engineers fits perfectly with Greek Mythology. Whereas elephant aliens does not.

Yeah, that's what I meant. The story possibilities are so much better with humanoids ie them being our creators etc. In the myth Prometheus also created humans, from clay, in the likness of the gods. He does look like he's taking a dump lol. I just find it more interesting and perhaps accurate since we can't see the SJ's legs in the cockpit chair.

agreed. i loved the choice of making the space jockey a suit, and have the engineers actually look like humanoids. its way more interesting because like op said, its never done before. having them look like humans makes me want to know more about them. are they violent just like us? is their civilization just like ours? how did they advance up to where they are today? how did they create black goo(or find it, acquire it) if all these questions can be answered, we can compare them to us humans. differences and similarities. and the suit looks so badass probably my favorite picture from the movie. loved all the designs

while I can see how the Engineer (in suit or chair) is a valid version of the "Who is the Space Jockey?" it still doesn't explain the fact that the original Space Jockey wasn't some walking around (on two legs or two arms) lifeform, but a CHAIR DWELLER. That's the thing this film missed, to show how something could be born and live its life in/as a Spacetime Telescope - what must be the BENEFIT of that sort of imprisoned life? Hell, maybe even THE WHOLE JUGGERNAUT was a lifeform, with one of its 'internal organs' being the Space Jockey brain bit. Imagine a planet of brand-new Juggernauts floating about and cavorting and linking up into larger Thought Communities and everything, learning how to hyperjump. What would a baby Space Jockey attached to his SPacetime Telescope seat look like? Anthropomorphise that story. That was a BIGGER question, organism-speakig, rather than "we're all from 'biochemists black goo'" - which again is valid in itself. Just a little done to death in several films before: Only time will tell, maybe PARADISE will have 'more' answers and it'll prove all the naysayers (oneself included) wrong.

In fact, having said all that, I'm VIVIDLY reminded of the JF Sebastian scene, the breakfast with Pris, that eye-flicking look of the CONSTRAINED TOY JF made, his little Pinnochio nose wobbling and some sort of massive wire across his face like a tooth brace. Remember that? That's what a seat-locked Space Jockey'd be like; inquisitive, lovely, immensely brainy behind his incapacitance. Gah, ah well, home again home again...

My only complaint about the Engineers was they were too small / short... nothing too impressive about them... and they need a tan. staff: Weyland Corp. Public Health and Enforcement, L6 Orbital Launch Platform # 3

Most of those do look to me like a Space Suit. Ridley also said a long long time prior that it was a space suit.... Not a skeleton..... However yes they could have gone for the creature under that space suit to be less Human looking, and that it retains a lot of the look of the Alien Space Jockey, and that it was wearing a pressure suit of sorts and the snorkel was not part of the creature. For this purpose this image stands out the best... The snorkel being part of the suit that attached to the creature. so without the suit he would look like this say.. So a combination of those images would had given a Alien looking race that looks better than a Elephant Organism. But i understand why Ridley went human looking because of the story that is to link that race with the creation of mankind. The other concept that i would had liked would indeed be that the Space Jockey was part of the Chair and that he can not leave the chair and the Space Jockey and Derelict are one and the same.
