MemberOvomorphJan-22-2013 3:32 PMIt has been suggested that weyland knew he was meeting gods and so would be cheating death. Hence no need for certain items on this trip.
I think we are letting this movie and storyline off the hook on easy answers.
I think if we put our brains to it a valid explantion can be forthcoming.
Some missing items I feel need mention:
*Back Up David
*Security Weapons/Equipment
*Back Up Prometheus even a shadow used in a double launch
*Communications that work both to home base and from the tunels to the ship
*Too much extra room on this mission(the gym for one) considerting that David is the only one actually using the Gym, the one in least need for physcical therapy.
*Unisex med Pods for all of the staff to use, if needed.
I suspect many answers will be coming forth in the next storyline but i still have these questions about this adventure, this storyline, this crew and this movie.
The more we seek out the Gods' the more I think the storyline detracts the serious viewer's understanding what is really going on.
Perhaps in answering the basic questions the overall unseen storyline will be revealed.

Possible he was a prototype, but really - why the need for a back up?
*Security Weapons/Equipment
They had weapons.
*Back Up Prometheus even a shadow used in a double launch
Cost. NASA didn't launch two Apollo space craft at the same time.
*Communications that work both to home base and from the tunels to the ship
If by home base, you mean Earth, then such technology didn't exist at the time. And despite some dropouts they were able to communicate most of the time from the pyramid to the ship. Way more than Dallas and co could from the Derelict.
*Too much extra room on this mission(the gym for one) considerting that David is the only one actually using the Gym, the one in least need for physcical therapy.
No one planned that whole crew would be dead and the ship destroyed less than 2 days after arriving. They were obviously planning on an extended archeological dig for which there would be downtime.
*Unisex med Pods for all of the staff to use, if needed.
Only 12 were ever made, and they had a medical bay for the crew.

MemberOvomorphJan-22-2013 4:46 PMI don't believe there was a double launch however I like to think something like that is the most possible for one of the ways it could go. Perhaps not Weyland industries. I kind of think the theory about Yutani is true but I use a different version of what I think happened.
I think Yutani already knew somethings because the quiet eye technology sort of infiltrated Weyland industries and they were making sure the "King" was going to treat his servants fairly... Sort of like Yutani really isn't evil at this point. They're more like the last form of true gov't on the planet. And actually care about people at this point.
We know Yutani had some sort of quiet eye technology involved prior to the secret mission that Weyland was setting up. Some of the public & even the rest of Weyland industries may not have known this went on because of the classified nature.
So I believe what we have is a lot more going on that surface narrative of the story. And a lot of people on this site have done a really good job at going much deeper than the surface.
Helping others to connect things and looking at all the possibilities. All the possible evidence, like good little scientists. Not only working out the "broad strokes" like David.
However, there's still so many more questions that haven't been completely answered yet that could lead in a lot of different ways.
The "water"/martian piss that wasn't frozen.... what the frick???? I don't know enough to even hazard much of a guess, or choose what I believe about that.
Now David's left with the knowledge of the signal of LV-426.

MemberOvomorphJan-22-2013 5:29 PMRidley did say he wanted to leave a lot of unanswered questions. He even made mention a few times about wanting to encourage speculation in online forums.
But he also said he didn't want people writing essays on it. Could be a clue that there are still a few ways it could go and some things are red herrings. Ridley may want us to analyze the movie but not over-analyze it, and the answers will eventually come. It's kind of like some answers could be very simple--like Yutani showing up as new characters. While others take a bit more thinking. However, over-thinking it without relying on a combination of science, logic, and intuition can also be dangerous and lead to the wrong answers. It's why scientists have to start with the hypothesis/observation. They have to start with an observation. Then a question, "what if?", that leads to trials of the theory and a search for the validity of the hypothesis. In the process new evidence is discovered, different conclusions, or evidence that can actually reshape the original hypothesis.

MemberOvomorphJan-22-2013 11:44 PMThe Prometheus seemed less a scientific vessel and more like an outerspace version of a luxury yacht. I think weyland believed he could wow his makers by how far we had come as a species. He could not have been more wrong. In hindsight they should have had a military backup, but weyland must have thought he would be received with open arms if indeed he really believed there were any engineers left. Certainly he expected to find something of great value - one does not spend a trillion dollars based on a few cave drawings alone. I do feel there will be an investigation as to what happened on lv223, shaw's warning will not be a sufficient explanation for the investors and family members of the team who will no doubt demand to know more. As for a backup david, one was more than adequate.
