Just saw this: Prometheus 2: Paradise, Or The End Of Mankind?

Ridley disappointed with prometheus script? Even I am not sure if the info in the article is correct sounds a bit unlikely in places but have a look...Maybe someone can check if it's true...

Hard to believe Ridley Scott was "disappointed" in the story when he was in the production since the beginning, way back when Prometheus was still just another Alien movie ("Alien: Engineers").

Scott himself gave greenlight to Damon Lindelof to expand Spaihts's original script - the director (who is also a producer) was there during the whole development process. If he disliked the premise or the screenplay itself, he'd just have Spaihts or Lindelof rewrite it.

I have to be honest. I am not a fan of the Hell on Earth idea. However, I have a feeling that this could be the plot. We have heard rumors that Ridley was recruiting other human parts. i find it very disappointing that they would kill Noomi's character. Shaw represents a very critical idea in this trilogy and it would be a shame to throw it away.

Hmmm yes its funny because I was just saying all the writers seem to be trying to copy game of thrones killing off main characters...but yer it all sounds a bit fishy so far - nothing to make it sound like the truth so ill wait for more info....it is slightly possible the studio took over and ridley wasnt in control it is true he hinted at this and there was a recession on and budgets were cut so maybe a rewrite wasnt possible. But still nothing big to back this idea up solidly so far.

The First Child › I agree completely. If they indeed kill Shaw off in the sequel, there is no way in hell I will like it more than the first film. Shaw and her faith-based quest for "God(s)" is the main motivation for the story to continue!

The Hell on Earth idea seems to me a path that would fall in line with of the Alien 3 script (1987) by William Gibson . There are quite a few points in that script that would fit into P2. Corporate recordings from the inside of the derelict being one of the things that stands out from that script.

In general I think there must me some seriously old ground being covered to generate this speculation

What, did Sigourney Weaver come up with these ideas? This sounds terrible enough that I would say (with confidence) that the whole thing is BS. I have read that article before and had the same reaction. Let's do an alien movie on Earth - i know that's you Sigourney, you old Battle Axe!

I'm just surprised this Nimrod character would be so loose lipped about what I presume would be a confidential conversation. Certainly, these plot ideas are not out of the question but I just don't see it. Yes there would probably have to be more human characters no matter what but they could be easily fit into the storyline as we imagine it. Or hope for it to be.

As for Ridley being unhappy with the script, it's possible, but would he say it? Unless he just made the colossal mistake of being frank with a chatterbox. It would dovetail with everything we've heard about the Company ( yok yok) interfering with the movie. But if he had a bum script he certainly ran with it and made it fun, I thought Prometheus was pretty badass, as you all know. Ridley Scott does a comic booky action horror epic! Anyway maybe he'll be more involved this time. I hope so.

Such a relief to hear that Ridley was dissppointed with the script for Prometheus, I'm not the least bit surprised. Hopefully that means he has not lost all of his marbles. I expected Prometheus to be great and I've never been so disappointed by any movie. Unintentionally funny, clumsy, pointless, without an ending.  It was a collossal dud, not even remotely deserving of the time and talk that has been wasted on it. I was hoping for a good sequel, but I can see right now, this series is not worth pursuing.

BSS1973, before getting a woody out of it, it'd be wiser to verify the (dubious) authenticity of such claims.

BSS1973, Your kind of a downer arent you? Hind sight is 20/20 and in my opinion the movie wasnt a dud or even a collossal dud. I really dont give a crap if your disappointed or not but talking like a loser doesnt help this case. If you "hated it" fine but dont drag the rest of down with you to hell where you were born. Not even remotely you drama Queen.

I already explained in a previous post in this very thread why I doubt Scott is disappointed in the story of the film - because it doesn't make sense. But IF he is, what's that supposed to mean?

Seeing who started this thread, it is clear that Ridley Scott being let down by his own movie would be the final "official" validation of all the hatred and disappointment many haters feel toward Prometheus.

I call bulls***.

Ingmar Bergman and Woody Allen, for instance, hate most of their own work.

Bergman said he only likes Persona, Cries & Whispers and From the Lives of Marionettes from his own oeuvre (looking for a source? Try The Ingmar Bergman Archives, by Taschen).

Woody Allen hates Manhattan! MANHATTAN! It's his own least favorite movie. Source.

So, all people who admire such films are losers? Are they wrong? Simply because the writer or the director or some actor who had a part in it dislike them?

If you say "yes", then I think you have no opinion of your own, and that's just sad.

Firstly - Anunnaki50 and BSS1973 - cool it, debate your point, not each other. Personal attacks are immature and unnecessary.

Secondly - IF, and it is a big IF, Ridley is disappointed with some or all of Prometheus we have to ask in what way - if in terms of editing, pace, narrative composition then this is no surprise - very few directors are happy with their movies upon completion, hence why we get so many different cuts after the movies release (how many time did Scott edit Blade Runner?). If in terms of the the story, the narrative structure, the logic, then this makes him human. Too much of Spaihts' original Alien prequel remained in the movie, the logic behind the "black goo" is muddled at best, and some of the characters are flatter than carboard cut outs. Prometheus is not a masterpiece, but at the same time it is not an abomination - it is a visually impressive, yet slightly flawed peek into the driving forces behind the Alien Franchise.

Finally you will notice the article, in its third idea proposition mentions an official site with the tag line "The search has only just begun". This site, found HERE, is actually part of this very site, and as such is not official - something a news reporter should check before posting, one thinks!

Yes still no evidence to say this is true so can't argue the point...I really hope Ridley does a proper bio about his life family and prometheus giving up the hidden secrets. And have it published after he's gone. But while he's alive I understand why we won't see much.

And yes even Howard the duck had fans out there no one can stop you liking something but the matter of it being muddled Ridley saying it was himself might change things some what. Anyway like I say we don't know yet. And yes I'm in the muddled but visually it was great and the original over all idea was great camp...just ended up disappointing...I'm still hoping for the patch up in part 2 maybe with flash backs...

Anyone can tell a story, but the trick is to tell it well. There a lots of factors to consider when looking at how well a movie delivers its story, and I think in the case of Prometheus a lot of the delivery was down to Lindelof’s characters. This is where I felt Prometheus fell short. That is only one area of delivery though and is not the bigger picture. I did not go to see Prometheus expecting just one movie. I came out expecting a sequel and that is what is now in the pipeline. The bigger picture is what comes next and I have felt that the main story has already been written, and quite some while back. I think the article referred to for this thread is just rewinding back the clock and doing nothing more than guessing even though it does raise some interesting points.

As for Ridley’s disappointment, that could be just about anything. The thing is that imo P1 and P2 are one story that was split into two. P1 being the set up and hopefully P2 will be the punchline. If that is the case then P1 was always going to be tricky to deliver because it is a bit like telling someone a joke and then saying, see you in a couple of years to hear the ending. I think Ridley has had to produce a film that does just exactly that with Prometheus, and has to want an audience want to come back and finish the tale.

I don’t think this is the first article we will have doing a bit of back peddling over old ground.

Pretty baffled by the lack of critical thinking, there is no evidence that verifies whether Ridley was in fact disappointed, this is mere conjecture. Ridley was happy with the theatrical and refused a Director's Cut for Christ's sake, that doesn't read as someone disappointed in his own film. Some healthy skepticism goes a long way, and I am also quite amused that dissenters of the film continue to languish on and on, the film really got under your skin, it seems lol.

Spaihts says
Something
Similar in this article.

User Avatar

Spaights: "The creature did change in some pretty dramatic ways from draft to draft. But the most dramatic change was the removal of the xenomorph from the film. That was a shift that happened at the same time as I stepped off the film. A lot of that push came from the studio very high up; they were interested in doing something original and not one more franchise film. That really came to a head at the studio - the major push to focus on the new mythology of Prometheus and dial the Aliens as far back as we could came down from the studio."

Just sayin.

Sorry, Spaihts quote doesn't change a thing, in my opinion.

The studio might've wanted to expand the storyline and create something more original (which is uusual and welcome, isn't it?) - THEN they hired Lindelof and Scott worked with him. The push for something less Alien-centric comes after bitter Spaihts depart the film. After that, there is all the rewriting of the original script. If Scott thought Lindelof's premise/story sucked, he'd have pushed for more rewrites.

The detail some of you is missing is actually quite simple: Sir Ridley Scott is not some no-name boy hot off film school. He's a veteran with considerable industry clout. I'll say it again: it makes no sense for him to accept whatever trash the studio supposedly throws his way and keep quiet. It just doesn't work that way when we're talking about Scott, Scorsese, Spielberg, Cameron etc.

This thread asks about the validity of the article. Quite simply I had noticed the places and times cited, which convinced me that it was false if Ridley is/was in Australia. Just a simple thing that did not add up in my mind. So, it would appear that Ridley is in discussions with a lot of people in London. This would imo be the root of maybe further articles and leaks etc. As to the real validity of the article in question. No smoke without fire.

Harrison Ford just got injured filming star wars lol maybe Ridley pretended to like him then got him back. Think he will be ok but he was airlifted to hospital but they are saying it was just the door to the millennium falcon fell on his ankle :p ...But they are also scanning his chest apparently who knows...

And yes Ridley is a veteran but there was a particular moment when I saw Ridley saying the studio pays the bills with a rye smile. And at the time it did make me think yes they control even him behind the scenes. Would be nice to know how much...

Well this is similar to what some person told me they heard the movie was going, in that its going to be more about David with a Ship carrying Hell on it, that he wishes to use for his Agenda and may not be going to Paradise but back to Earth.....

This would leave a lot of plot holes, well a story that would not match with Alien, unless its purely going as a Alternative like New Star Treks to the Older Movies.

I hope they dont go this route....

As far as disapointments... Yes Ridley was rumoured to not be happy with some elements, but untill you talk to him yourself you can not be 100% sure what he feels, as some rumours are he wanted a more Spaights draft and thus more about the Xeno Organism than the Space Jockey Race.

But for me the whole purpose of the movie was who are the Space Jockeys, that should had been covered or led to be covered by future movies as the main angle of the plot, with the Xeno and connection and how Weyland Yutani came about being sub plots.

And no soon as they went the route that these Engineers could be the Space Jockey or at very least related somehow and these Engineers played a part in our creation, and visits to Earth and Ancient mankind that we interpreted as many Ancient Gods etc...

This was a massive scope for a truly immense universe and plot, but with that comes a lot of hype to pull it off and thus could be a bit of a poisoned challace, compared to if they went the route that the Space Jockey/Engineers was some Alien Race from far far away that happend to have some connection to the Xeno and was either experimenting on them, or created them as a experiment of that they simply found them and wanted to exploit them but they got burnt by them just as the Humans in Alien Franchise did.

This would have been a more simplier way to go, but now they gone the Engineers/Space Jockey created or played a hand in our Creation and Visits to us over the thousands of years of our Evolution and that they may had played a hand in the Xeno creation or at very least re-engineer it or its predessor..

While they gone the Engineers/Space Jockey = Mankinds creator route they surely cant now go and drop that element or at least not touch up on it again....

The only things i can pick up about the movie changes are...

That Ridley seemed to be happy with Spaights draft, Fox wanted to tone down the Xeno Element and explore the Engineers and Weyland elements....  Lindeloff came in to change things a bit.

And Ridley had said that he felt the Spaights draft was too connected to Alien and that where they was going with this movie was to open up a new route that would lead to a new universe to explore while giving us hints to the Alien/Space Jockey connection.

This does not show that Ridley disliked Lindeloff draft or agreed and loved it.

Seems yes Fox pulls the strings but they own the Franchise, if Ridley wanted Part 2 to b like a Alien 5 and Fox wanted no Xenos in it at all, and Ridley rejected this.. can Ridley then provent a Part 2.. nope... Fox can go and get someone else in and change the story to ways that Ridley may not have wanted... this happened with Aliens,  Fox got Cameron in on it and Ridley could not say how he wanted the movie to proceed....

i would assume Ridley would play ball with Fox because he would rather have some input on the Franchise and the origins of the Xeno and who the Space Jockey are as opposed to no input.

I would think that any disapointment that he really has could be down to firstly the time allowed and budget, i am sure Ridley would have loved to have been able to produce a longer movie with higher budget but he had to work to restraints.

2nd Disapointment i think would be how the movie was recieved, and 3rd i think there are certain aspects in hindsight that Ridley would have loved to have done differently....

Maybe add more of the Alien Horror Element, as Prometheus lacked that from Alien and any Action from Aliens, was more of a 2001 Space Oddesy/Lost in Space meets our Ancient Creators kind of a Sci Fi movie.

I think Ridley may had been disapointed with he look and scale of the Engineers, and Elders, i think they have been cut and other scenes to portray the Engineers as merely a servant race, basically just a Biological David 8 for the Elders.

And thus maybe cutting the Elders allows for them to redesign them as a more Magestic Godlike race...
