The bit about Prometheus crew being submerged intrigued me to go back and have another look.  They don't appear to be submerged in the film at all.  They all appear to be dry.  Shaw is dry when David puts a towel on her, and the only liquid is what she spewed on the floor.  Her hair was dry when the cryotube was opened.

And yet Vickers leaves wet footprints between her tube chamber and her room, and is dripping wet when David finds her doing pushups.

Very curious.  Maybe she had already showered before David found her?

But they don't appear to be submerged in water, when David is watching Shaw sleep, nor when he opens the chambers.  The only pool of water is below Shaw's tube after they wake up, while she's purging.  There's no other pools of water on the floor or even wet footprints in the rest of the hypersleep chamber.

Shaw's hair is dry, while Vickers' is, oddly, dripping wet.

@S.M

That is quite intriguing, perhaps that's what made Vickers look so young compared to Weyland! Good eye!

I never even noticed the apparent discrepancy until Ati brought it up. These flicks just keep on giving. :)

Maybe I'm forgetting a scene in the film where "crew members are submerged in a viscous liquid during cryosleep"?  I watched the scene with David watching Shaw and when everyone wakes up.  Am I missing a scene?

Thanks for the advice though.  And the snark. :)

Also:

"The egg chamber is not actually a part of the Derelict, but rather a huge cavern beneath it"

I don't believe the book confirms this.  Kane and Dallas certainly speculate that it could be cave rather than part of the ship, but it's not settled.

@ SM,

It is possible that the crew of the Prometheus was submerged in a cryo-gel. For one we are thinking this all takes place several decades in the future. The gel could be reacting to a surface of nano spray on our skin. Maybe the cryo-gell falls off like water, just like in semi waterproof cell phones.

Lets face it 2 years is a long time for your skin to be exposed to air when you are not moving and very little circulation is going to your skin. The gel makes a lot of sense. The gel could be circulating through a machine and being oxygenated. A machine could be filtering out waste products. Also, it might deliver food and form structure for movement. Maybe it is made up of simple nano machines.

I know that a lot of viscous looking material was all over the floor where doctor Shaw was waking up with the plastic basin in her hand.

I have to admit there should have been a scene where they are being cooled down in the gel and prepped for space travel. This movies budget changed at some point requiring many larger sets not to be built.

Still enjoy the film anyway.

The gel makes sense in terms of protecting the skin - but there doesn't appear to be any evidence of it in the film.

I don't believe there needed to be a scene of them going to sleep, unless it had some information to impart.  The hypersleep chamber was already built, so they could've had such a scene if they wanted.

"I know that a lot of viscous looking material was all over the floor where doctor Shaw was waking up with the metal basin in her hand."

All things considered (ie. no one else has puddles under their tubes), pretty sure that's what she just threw up.  The way she was going, there's going to be a lot of spillage.

I never saw any evidence of liquid. The wake up scene is quite wet because everyone is hydrating and vomiting. Even the Engineer appears to have an abdominal issue when it wakes up.

It always looked to me that Vickers had iron discipline. And a shower.

Aorta:

I don't think it's an abdominal issue. I always assumed that was orthostatic hypotension. It's a sudden drop in blood pressure from lying supine for a long time. The blood pools in the lower extremities so you get 'lightheaded' or 'dizzy' from lack of oxygen to the brain. That's why we in the medical field have patients who are going from lying to standing pump their ankles to help move blood from the legs back up to the brain. You don't want people fainting on you.

I would love to read the novelization of Alien. I read the novelization of Alien 3 and it was somewhat disappointing. Wish their was a novelization for Prometheus.

"Vicker's footprints are in one direction, outward!"

Maybe her shower was in the cryotube chamber?

So how would you explain her being dripping wet, when no one else wakes up from cryosleep dripping wet?

Vickers "liked to minimize risk." She could have had some other parameters set up for her cryo.

I don't agree, seeing as her tube looks the same as everyone else's - including Weyland's - and every other cryotube in the Alien films doesn't involve being submerged.

But the "minimize risk" line does make it a possibility.

@Ati - no need to make jabs at S.M. Let's keep discussion civil and on-topic now shall we.

On the topic of the crew of the Prometheus waking up wet however, I always assumed they were encased in some form of gel, which kept the skin from drying out while being exposed to low temperatures. Also - waking up, the tubes likely were filled with a warm water/gel to assist in the body's acclimation to room temperature (like thawing meat).

If that's the case why does no one appear to be wet apart from Vickers? You would at least expect their hair to be wet, and more evidence of water on the floor?

When we see Shaw puking in a bucket, the floor looks wet, as does she and those around her. Holloway as well, has a towel wrapped around him.

I knew some of that, but great to see none the less. I need to get the Alien novel one of these days. Nursing school takes all of my money lately, but in May my training is complete.

Indeed.  And David puts a towel on Shaw.

However she isn't wet, neither is anyone else and no one else has puddles underneath their tubes.

It's very different from how we find Vickers.  No one is wet when the tubes open.

I looked at the scene again. And it doesn't look much like there is any liquid or gel in the cryo-chambers. But there is steam rising from them. So I'm thinking they must be kept somewhat humid or something to help maintain moisture.

Vickers is wet while the others are not. So that's odd. But then again so is she, so who knows. Maybe she doused herself in some antimicrobial substance with her risk minimizing tendencies.

Indeed there is condensation rather than being any liquid... and indeed Vickers is oddly wet but not her hair....

As far as the things in the book,  it is interesting and no matter what proof, or comments or what we chose to use as CANON they can change their minds to how the whole Derelict situation went down.

But the reason for why a Urn/Jar ended up in the Pilot Chamber and described different to the Oval things in the Cargo hold.. is interesting.

We dont know if this would be used to explain the Space Jockey Event in future movies... i will make a Topic as i have narrowed down the Space Jockey Story a bit..

But with Alien Covenant its all subject to change but indeed movies in the Franchise have re-used unused ideas, plots and concepts from previous movies.
