SPOILER ALERT- Faris

Faris was in the room with Oram's wife (sorry I don't recall her name) and got sprayed in the face with what could be assumed contaminated blood. Faris told her to stay put and then left locking the door to prevent escape. When Faris returned, she wouldn't let Oram's wife out. WHY? There was time to open to open the door and close it before the buster shot out. Faris was just as contaminated and ran all over the ship if contamination was the issue. They could have had two guns shooting at that morph.

Thoughts?

Hey Buddy - I think she was panicking and didn't know what to do.

dk

MemberTrilobiteApr-28-2017 7:31 PM

She did panic and the crew may not have been trained for situations like that. It is a military mindset and looking at it from that perspective. It will be a gripe of mine but it will not deter from enjoyment. Besides, there would be no movie if everything went as planned lol!

For me Faris behavier is very strange, I watching several times the Backbuters scene (very scary!) and how she is locking the door and seals it, sacrificing and betraying her friend in a very selfish way, I guess It was pure survival instinct.

MemberTrilobiteApr-28-2017 7:47 PM

Roger55 It is too bad. Save those who can be saved. Then again she couldn't save her own skin for that matter as it turned out. I wonder if that characteristic will be hinted at in the movie.

I can only put this down to Panic....

Which means maybe we can explain Milburn?

I wonder if he was one of these Furry Fursuit Fetish people... that would explain that scene.

At least we put this to bed...

I thought it was that glove but its on the wrong hand... maybe she changed hands..

But the footage now shows its Faris and it was a Gun... that in the Trailer was a Un-Gun ;)

I think we need enjoy the movie.... but i can see critics picking up potential errors and plot holes of sorts in this movie.. it may even have more than Prometheus.

But as long as there is Face Huggers, Aliens Gore etc i think people would just over look it.. as i think Prometheus was picked on in part because there was no actual Alien Answer and No Xenomorphs ;)

I agree BigDave. I will enjoy the movie and that little part will be a critique point (it is a movie after all. But we have to have something to nit pick about to keep the forum alive). Others will find their own little points of contention. I like what is given so far.

MemberTrilobiteApr-28-2017 8:28 PM

BigDave- indeed it seems the blurry figure is Faris, but I think the voice on the head set was different from the trailer if memory serves. There could still be some clever editing going on.

BigDave

MemberDeaconApr-28-2017 8:37 PM

It is editing, the voice is clearly hers but its put out of timing in the video... and the Shaw with the "Take Me Home" could be a similar thing.

The whole scene, now we have seen it (Alien Day Special) has cleared the Faris thing up, but also made me notice some mistakes..

I doubt the whole Med-bay and Corridor on Drop Ship debate wont get the same attention as the Egg Chamber on Derelict though ;)

I really liked the ten minute video but it seemed obvious it was edited for time. Pacing like that would lose impact without some "breathing room" over the long haul imo.

MemberFacehuggerApr-28-2017 8:56 PM

She should have quarentined herself in the room as well and it might have been a fair fight.  Thier situational conditioning had to have been extensive - cryosleep group above all else...Otherwise it's a joke.  Plot hole or a person that was selected for the task in error.  But, I am someone who deals in scenario analysis - they would have planned for this in reality.  The conversation would have been "get in here", not "let me out".

Definitely Faris running away...

Spearfish First, I will enjoy the movie and immerse in its world. I will always think of issues of security and quarantine issues. Scenario analysis like you stated is important as well. Frankly, I was taken aback when they entered the surface on foot in water without any real environmental protection gear being worn. Again, I will just try to enjoy the ride.

On the other hand, it is nice to be among members who care about details. IMO, it adds an extra level of appreciation for scifi in general.

Dk- I appreciate the comments.  i am excited as hell, and believe me that I will mentally plant myself into the movie which includes a lot of preparation and execution errors...But those errors accurately replicate being human :-).  I agree on landing site and protocols issues, it's just fun to point out as we escape life and drill down into this film.  I guess I am looking for this film to outsmart this forum group, and that is a tough thing to do.

Whether we like to admit it or not, people in highly-adrenalized states from fear can and will think of their own keester first and foremost, and will sacrifice friends and family.

Faris was borderline on total shutdown, and while she might have passed eval for the mission, there's NO way to really test for some mind-twisting horror happening right before your eyes.

Consider it from her perspective exclusively, basically her mind shut-down to Basic self-preservation mode from massive adrenaline and star, screaming monkey-brain terror.

Blackwinter-witch I agree with both your and Spearfish's observations. My views might not be fair, but I am a fan too like anyone else.

I am feeling this movie will bring it home.

Personal things remind me that pre mission realistic training should prepare people for missions, especially for panic situations- training so repetitive and to the point and so basic that one falls back on "muscle memory" in fight/flight situations. Please know that I am not bashing. That is just my thing that is as meaningful to me as a Lwrence of Arabia quote might be to some one else. IT IS ALL GOOD. but I gotta bitch a litte.

Spearfish

MemberFacehuggerApr-28-2017 9:50 PM

I understand fight or flight, but for this primary crew you want people that memorize and follow predetermined protocols - like a robot (where is Walter?). Emergency protocol, followed in their sleep.  With that, there is no panic, there is only speed of response as a variable.

Think - "Navy SEAL".  Extreme preparation, and minimal panic.  That would have been the staff that I would have chosen for the operational flight crew.  At least trained to 90%, which is no small task.

I don't find her behavior unexplainable, and she does her best, it seems, to fight instead of just losing it under shock from experiencing the horror. And I think acting here is a definite improvement over the last several installments - Resurrection acting sucked throughout (the film was full of "jokes" that made it almost a joke, and that reflected on the actors, or they brought it...), AVP and AVPR are not even worth mentioning in that department, and Prometheus... Prometheus (which I still love) employed big names, but the acting, with exceptions of Fassbender and Rapace, was either over the top (sorry Vickers and Holloway) or lazy (sorry, pretty much everyone else) or out of context. I think all actors in this 10-minute footage are showing decent acting chops, and hopefully that is the case with the rest of the film. They appear quite human, and it makes the viewer (I speak for myself) care for them and feel sad for their unfair demise.

MemberTrilobiteApr-28-2017 11:36 PM

JonesRules Good observations. I think the acting was good in AR and it did have a comedy or humorous side to it. But it also had that gruesome dark failed experiment room- heavy duty for its time imo.

I agree that that the acting in the 10 minute clip is gritty and realistic. That is what the series needs.

GOOD points, but while we did see evidence of Faris operating pretty much on training and such, )quarantining the room, going for a gun, sending out a call for assistance)
...the inside of her head, her psychological state would be so profoundly kicked in the guts that it would hamper even hard-core Navy SEAL/Russian Spetsnaz training and conditioning due to the active mind trying to come to terms with the 'unreal'

dk I agree with you regarding AR and still like that film a lot, it just felt like a step down from the three that came before it, specifically in terms of dialogue and its delivery (which is a big part of the acting). But, you know, bad lines of dialogue can make any Oscar-winner look like a high-school play participant (wink wink at a certain suit in Prometheus).

I'm not bitter, I am a big fan of the whole franchise, it is just that multiple viewings of the favorite films make you notice flaws more and more. And I am enormously hyped for A:C and am willing to ignore any possible flaws at this point, until I see the masterpiece (which I am close to be sure it is).

Training like that can be lengthy and deep to be able to fall back on the mission despite what is going on. It is not simple. Some might compare it to a form of brain washing. To broad brush it, mission comes first along with safety of personnel- just ask Hicks or Hudson.

MemberTrilobiteApr-29-2017 12:02 AM

JonesRules Agree. We have the luxury of spoilers and teasers and can formulate expectations before the movie drops. That can be a good thing. Speaking of things, I am old enough to remember when Carpenter's The Thing came out in 1982 and you pretty much just had to go by a picture and possibly a mention in a news paper or magazine. You went into the movie with very little knowledge, if any, of what to expect. Same goes for Alien.

MemberOvomorphApr-29-2017 12:10 AM

dk - good point. It was the same for me with Aliens, though I did not see it in 1986. It was in the early 90s, still in the theatre. Knew nothing, was numb throughout, fell in love, never looked back. Flaws? What flaws? ))
