Not a good sign for Alien: Covenant sequel

Why not?Yes disapointing but I read it hasn't opened in China and Japan yet.Then you have rentals and DVD sales.

The totals for the weekend aren't great, but still it's good to have the top box office number. I was expecting more though. I even noticed in the showings that I saw on Thursday and Friday, the theaters were pretty bare. Both times there was a very small group waiting outside the theater early, but not many more people showed up. 

I am going to guess that no matter how the box office numbers go, Fox will give it at least one more go.

There is too much value in building franchises nowadays to just ditch it now (and gear up for an inevitable reboot). It's an interesting franchise, but unfortunatley it divides people nowadays. This and Prometheus just cant generate the positive reviews to draw people in.

Side note: Have you guys looked at the imdb user reviews? It's literally almost ten pages of people crapping on the movie. SOOOO many 5 stars or less reviews. The internet is pretty much ripping it up. 

We probably still will get a sequel but it probably won't be for a long time now due to low box office numbers..Not to mention Ridley Scott is filming other projects at the moment..

The British producers will easily do another one on these numbers so far.

The movie cost 97-114 million to film.  That means it needs to make at least 250 million worldwide to bring in a profit for the studio.  Overseas box office is crucial but remember the studio gets 1/3 of that total amount.

Producers have nothing to do with financing of the movie.  The seek out a studio and distributor for financing; but if there is too much a risk, it may get shot down.

The possibility is still there for a sequel/prequel but the next movie needs to have the budget around the 90 million range.

The IMDB comments goes to show that the negative comments on this board is not a fluke or a small segment in the unhappy camp.  Even good and great directors have admitted to their crappy work. 

After seeing Covenant I hope they give any future Alien projects to another director.  If any other director had produced Covenant, the movie would've been trashed even more.

Covenant blows. It sucks what they did to the genuinely interesting concepts in Prometheus. The Alien franchise is dead to me now, so I hope it bombs. Ridley Scott, his writers, the studio and stupid fans complaining about Prometheus ruined this franchise. 

It's not the director that blows really, it's the writing. Although the director made serious mistakes in cutting the scenes of character development that were originally in the film.

The writing is light years behind ALIEN and ALIENS.

All I'm saying is that it might be a little longer until we get an Alien: Covenant sequel..I hope not but I guess we'll have to wait and see..

I can't believe this...Way to go people, bad mouthing this film might have cost us the sequel...

The next two weeks you have Baywatch and Pirates of the Caribbean being released.  It will depend on how much those films cut into Alien Covenant viewings in the next couple of weeks.  I know some fans are going for multiple viewings, so that is a positive.  I see the film crossing 200 million worldwide.  We need the UK, Japan and Russia to come through. 

Snake Not everybody is interested in that sequel if it is somehow related to this debacle. People should write an open letter to Michael Fassbender asking him please not to take part of the next movie.

People bad-mouthed Prometheus and still a sequel was made.  The same when Alien3 killed off Ripley.  What will really determine a sequel is if the movie makes a decent profit.

WEEKEND ESTIMATES

Alien Covenant should have killed Guardians of the Galaxy playing in its 3rd week.  

What on earth are u on about joylitt?? David was the best thing about this movie just as he was in prometheus. Michael Fassbender is easily one of the best actors in the game right now.

Working Joe I know he is great, but I am not interested in watching another movie about David.

Frankly, David is just another angry AI out to work the same, tired trope of 'KILL ALL HUMANS'...lame, worn-out, and cliche`.
David, Skynet, Cylons, etc..
Yeah, David's not original, he's just a Dr. Mengele/Moreau twist on a worn-out and cliche` theme.

Hardly surprised. They toss out the most interesting aspect of the film in the engineers and turn it into another mind-numbing, stalk-and-kill sci-fi monster movie with the same tired ending we've seen in every alien movie.

The only ones they have to blame is themselves.

This movie is the one that made the most damage to the franchise. It just didn't just divide the audience. It killed the interest in the franchise of many fans and casual movie goers. It perpetuated the concept that Alien is some kind of pretentious and incoherent rehash of sci fi tropes that exists merely on the promise of bigger and better things to come. 

The real problem is the vast majority of people could care less about David ....read around the net, read YouTube comments, etc. I understand that's where Scott has taken the story and for some it's very interesting....but most people don't get it, don't want to get it. Imagine seeing this film if you had not seen Prometheus lol

Well, that's what a lot of people are doing, and they have no idea what is happening. You could see ALIENS without seeing ALIEN and it would work just fine on a Friday night. Not so with this. This is cult picture, not one for the masses. "Pirates" is going to really cut into it's profits.

Great response Ocean.  Fassbender is a great actor but to extend his role as David is uncalled for.  Honestly, I think Ash (when you finally realize he is one) and Bishop were more compelling androids.  Bishop came back in Alien3 but we know he was the human that the android was modeled from.

David is better than Call.

I don't complain about the stupidity of the characters. I complain about the stupidity of the writers and their rote plot devices. Mistaken identity? What's next, amnesia?... Wait, I think that is what they have in store for us in the next one.

You can actually make great movie where everybody is a moron. Fargo is the living proof of that.

I loved ALIEN: COVENANT even if there were flaws and cliche moments in an Alien movie. I'm hoping this is the last one. I kinda want the Space Jockey to always be a mystery. PROMETHEUS made the Space Jockey less a mystery with the engineers and what happened on LV-223..So we'll see if a sequel does get made and hopefully David doesn't turn out to be the Space Jockey..That would just be lazy writing...
