ali81Alien: Covenant ForumA complete list of everything that is canon

for me, what is regarded as canon depends on what source comes first. for example, if certain avengers come together to fight a certain enemy and events unfold in a certain way in the comics but in the movie it differs as in say they use different characters to fight or the outcome is different, then the movie cannot be considered canon as the comic came first. the film is now a reboot or remake in someone elses image.

as for the novels. its hard to say really but id say novels with major differences cant be considered canon like the AC novel imo isn't canon. Daniels is aware of the David/ Walter switch at the end but in the novel she isn't. the movie came first and this is a major story arc for the sequel so for me the novel isn't canon. plus there are 3 face huggers brought onboard by David not the 2 we see in the film. such blatant and obvious differences are either stupidity or its done to make it clear the novel isn't canon. or did AFD have access to an early draft of the script and there were indeed 3 face huggers and Daniels was unaware it was David and the novel was released before he got to make the appropriate changes? if this is the case then Fox shoudlv known better than to allow its release before the changes but it still doesn't affect its outcome. I don't consider the novel canon as the novel contradicts the movie too much and in too many vital and obvious places

the comics and novels (non movie related) CAN be considered canon by individuals as they happen in their own timeline usually and there isn't much to discredit them as we haven't seen a movie that shows a different set of events that contradict them. river of pain is a prime example. it shows us what happens to Newts parents inside the derelict but as the movie never covers this and no one has said otherwise, surely those events can be considered canon? the only thing that can discredit River of pain is where RS takes the prequels to tie into Alien. if he shows that David for example steals the vessal we all know as the derelict, loads it with eggs and crashes/ lands on LV426, then the events of ROP involving Newts parents within the derelict is discredited and no longer canon as I assume the movie will take priority canon wise. personally I love ROP and would rather have its suggested turn of events to be the case but that's just me.

the original film will never look dated. its the best of the lot visually, story and character wise imo. hell, even the guy in a rubber suit monster looked better than anything theyv done since with cgi. nearly 40 years old and still a masterclass and will be in another 40 years. films like alien, predator, blade runner, lost boys etc r films that should never be remade

I Moon Girl Out of the Shadows was the best of that trilogy.

Sea of Sorrows is ok, but is just a return to the mine on LV178. Its good but doesn't really offer much more than OotS did.

I was excited for River of Pain as the story of Hadley's Hope, but to be honest it was pretty lacklustre. Slow burn first act which was great, then it rushed through the action once the shit his the fan.

Introduced a possible new protagonist for the franchise in Demian Brackett who as much reason to fight the Xenomorph as Ripley did...

I was hoping it would be more about Newt's ordeal surviving alone, but it was more a quick recap of what happened before Ripley and the marines arrived

Very true, but it better NOT be spooned fed to us.  Knowing Ridley though, that will never happen.

I liked Out of the Shadows, yet I haven't read the other two yet.  Yea, I know I fell behind.  I got Out of the Shadows when it first hit the bookstores.

Th problem with Out of the Shadows to me is that the fact Ripley seems forced into it.  It does make sense that someone could have found her in space before she was found in Aliens.  I guess it just seems forced to me because I'm so used to believing that she just floated in space for a long time.  I'll probably be reading River of Pain in the common months, so don't spoil me on any info!

"Are the books Out of the Shadows, Sea of Sorrow and River of Pain canon?"

I would agree that they are Dr. Curt Connors.

There are obvious inconsistencies when comparing the novels to the films (Alien, Alien: Covenant novels) but there are concepts in Sea of Sorrows that tend toward connecting with what we have seen in the films. Titan Books and 20th Century Fox were involved in the novels too and that helps toward canon in my opinion.

That is great Ati. I'm sure the writers just love our auditing of their everything regarding characters, places, etc...thank you. Good work...I wouldn't have found that....

One thing I noticed BigDave that the multi-trillion dollar Prometheus mission was confirmed lost, the insurance company agrees, and the funds are paid within a few years (less than a decade). And fund the Walter project in time for the Covenant mission. There must have been some sort of confirmation of loss on LV-223 by the insurance company to pay that much, that quick.

There is another potential inconsistency with the old Weyland site is the "Expected Launch Date" which was a decade later in 2091 but that can be explained because nothing leaves on time and this projection was made in 2073. So, most of a policy payout, that could be near a trillion $ or more, was put into Walter before 2104.

chliAlien: Covenant ForumEarly draft of, "The Crossing" reveals more about David and Shaw

Michelle Johnston

But don’t you think that the ending of Prometheus, where David and Shaw set off in the juggernaut “still searching”, was intended to perhaps continue the saga (if Prometheus was successful enough)? After having decided to make a sequel, it would have been interesting to know what the idea had been from the beginning. We don’t know what Harper and Green had in mind for us in the original scripts. Perhaps the idea from the beginning was to continue where Prometheus ended and we were supposed to follow the adventures of David and Shaw but then the fans’ reaction made them turn to a more alien-like movie and the story of David and Shaw had to be cut?

I think there is a real problem with genre and expectations. Alien was, in fact, a B horror and gore movie which had been turned into an A horror and gore movie (Scott). The problem with Prometheus was that many fans expected the same kind of movie as Alien. But Prometheus is more of sci-fi drama rather than horror and gore. As we have discussed many times before Fox and Scott then turned back to an Alien horror and gore movie and lots of action to satisfy both the fans of Alien and the fans of Aliens.

Contact is very good, by the way. John Hurt experiences a different kind of contact in Alien.  :)

Not at all for me. I loved the behind-the-scenes of Alien: Covenant.

The only change I would prefer would be that the special effects engineering not be released before the film.

So I vote the eggs aboard the derelict are recent(2120 ish).....And NOT placed by David..this would be very cliche'!! The queen or something else....

What do the Engineers fear? Who/what is their sworn enemy? Are they the top of the food chain?

I have no problem if the Engineers are just modified humans who were removed from Earth tens of thousands of years ago....Altered by some alien race.

@chli

To answer your various questions.

The supporting caste in BR2049 operate in an entirely different way to AC they are their to support one theme K's journey. We know a young actor was considered for Prom 2 and there were multiple David's. I believe like "Contact' and Ellie's father and 2010 and the messages from the machine more characters could be introduced to mediate on behalf of the Engineers and Hierarchy.

I also think if you go to the Engineers Homeworld and find out there story you finally need to meet one used sparingly it would have been the epicentre of the movie rather like the Doctor in BR2049.

Is the film action horror et etc no thats the whole point of Prometheus is to steer away from ALIEN.

The irony is Prom did much better than A.C.

Finally we should remember Prometheus was not intended to start a series of prequels but inhabit the same universe and go off tangentially.

A slow egg morph would be interesting to see- start to finish- while seeing the victims lose their humanity. The black goo in Prometheus sort of did that in its own way. However, this would seem to be an admission by RS that the scene in Alien should not have been cut.

I Moon GirlAlien: Covenant ForumAre the eggs on LV-426 the result of the colonists embryos?

I just don't know if I can assume that the eggs in Alien are the colonists on the Covenant.  Yes, I do see the pushing of the story for us to connect the dots and assume that, yet I just don't think Ridley Scott would do something THAT predictable.  I mean, that would basically give us the story.  What's the point of watching the movie then, except for the nice CGI and finding out the details of the story.  I'm not disagreeing or agreeing, I'm just not jumping to conclusions here.

As Starlogger said above, I really don't think David created those exact eggs we see in Alien.  I think David took ideas from the Engineers.  I mean, there is that mural in Prometheus with a Xeno-like creature.  I know there is debate over that in how canon it is though.  I guess all the dots aren't easy to connect in this particular case.

Ridley Scott's best option is to create something original while everyone is wondering how this ties into Alien.  Then, at the last scene, everything makes sense and everyone is just applauding the originality and uniqueness with creativity because the finale of the prequels wasn't bogged down with what the original set in place story wise.  THAT is what Ridley needs to do.  He did it with Prometheus and Alien: Covenant, yet I didn't like Alien: Covenant near as much as Prometheus.  Of course, Fox may be to blame with that.  The basis for Alien: Covenant's story was VERY creative and captivating.  Sadly the movie got twisted while in Ridley Scott's control.

The Alien franchise is NOT about predictability.  Well, at least under Ridley Scott's control.  That is why we got H.R. Giger for the monster.  Ridley wanted something original.  So far the whole prequels have been original.  Prometheus is HANDS DOWN.  Alien: Covenant was too and I think it would be hard to make Alien: Covenant original because it was a sequel, period.  So, I think A:C needs some credit there.  I'm just giving credit where credit is due.

Of course, I could be wrong about Ridley Scott's plans, yet I hope I am right.  I don't want to see the prequel finale explaining Alien with some disgruntled Engineers killing David with a swipe of their hand.  I'm sure David is no match for multiple Space Jockeys.  Plus, if we do want to connect the dots here, then if those eggs are the colonists, then what would David use to fight the Engineers with?  The Covenant could be destroyed easily by the Engineers.  Sure, I'm sure something could be written to explain how David could outsmart them, yet I don't think it would be on the level of Ridley Scott's quality.

So, to answer the question about if the eggs are the colonists,  I think we need to look at how Ridley Scott has treated the Alien franchise as a whole.  The prequels as a general idea are loaded with originality.  I expect the same for the finale.  If not, it could hurt the original Alien movies story and it would just bog down the finale with the fact that it directly ties into Alien.  I mean we could get a 20 min scene showing how that juggernaut crashed!  Both prequels have been right at 2 hours.  I just hope there isn't going to be room in the film for a crash scene and a dying scene for the pilot.

Still, in the end, I'm going to go see it in theaters, so Disney will get my money in addition to me buying the box set of the prequels, so maybe it just won't matter to them anyways?  Ridley Scott gets his prequels that he's pushing for and BOOM! the franchise goes in hibernation for 10 years while Disney decides what to do with an R film that is intended to scare the $h!t out of people (as Ridley Scott says).

We've all read Ridley Scott will get free reigns on Alien: Awakening.  I expect him to use it to his fullest extent even if Disney is in control.  I wouldn't be surprised if there is some sort of agreement between Fox and Disney to ensure the rights Fox gave Ridley now that the franchise is under Disney.

I have to agree that she would be perfect androida Ati. She has very sharp features and perfect symmetry. And they seem to make most of the robots very attractive so I think she would do ok there in casting too. I'm sorry...my Davina was a screen shot edited from something I had already built yet to launch. Yes, I could have done better with a little eye makeup.

A few believe Vickers was an android V I N E T I C U M. Yes, make many androids that look like her. Very many.

"But we have to consider that Alien Covenant has Re-wrote the Weyland Timeline as far as Prometheus, and if this is the FIRST David then its safe to assume that David was first created around the year 2035-40 and NOT 2025."

That seems reasonable BigDave. I believe Ridley Scott feels that way too (timeline defined by him) and the Peter Weyland in Alien: Covenant looked around 17 years older than he was in his TED speech.

The original Alien was really frightening because we knew virtually nothing about it. Remember the look on Brett's face when he encountered it?

As audience members we had that exact same experience. No idea what in the hell it was, no time to process exactly what we were looking at, yet instantly realising that it was super deadly!

No other portrayal of the Alien has been able to recreate that.

That's why Ridley wanted to move things in another direction. The Engineers, The Black Pathogen, The Baby Deacon, (shoot me, I liked it!) The Hammerpede, even the incredibly large, cuddly, vagina monster- Cuddles, what an awesome trip that was! All successful, Proto-Morb family members it seemed to me. Plus, Prometheus opened the door to other permutations of deadly Morb offspring.

There were so many possibilities, so many routes for this story to follow. Prometheus was the right way to go. It's never too late....

Ps I still long to see some creepy, horrifying, egg-morphing!!

about the tailor-made female android as David approaches very much according to my taste at Vickers.

David and Shaw “solving a riddle together” (life/creation/the universe and our place in it), focusing on the dynamic between them and the development of character (Beauty and the Beast) in an engineer setting would be very interesting indeed! But, it would be more of sci-fi drama than sci-fi horror? So again we have the question of target groups?

Also, David probably isn’t interested in Shaw’s riddles? He has already met his creator - and is disappointed (just as Shaw ought to be after the meeting with an engineer)? Would David change through Shaw’s compassion? That would, of course, be an interesting dilemma and tension throughout this kind of film (Beauty and the Beast)?

2001 was a great movie and I agree with you that making David the creator of “denture features” “has backfired” and that the outbreak on LV-223 was quite sufficient and a “respectable beginning for penis head”.  :)

Would Shaw (not being able to create children) be tempted to accomplish this with the help of the mutagen? Well, she wasn’t particularly fond of it the first time, was she (the trilobite)?  :)

The idea that the engineer world is a barren one because of their “fall” would imply that their makers have punished them? Who are they and have they, in turn, someone who has created them in infinite regression?

Finally, the idea of following Shaw in the prequels to Alien would be appealingly symmetrical to following Ripley in the sequels?  :)

Yes, there is a big difference between getting critical acclaim and earning a lot of money. Star Wars didn't get particularly good criticism for example.

I don't know if BR49 is more of a failure than AC, as Covenant had brand recognition (with the first 2 being global successes) and the original Blade Runner was a cult classic. Sure it was insane to spend 150 mil but it did make 15 mil more than Covenant world-wide with 20 mil made less in China. It is Villeneueve's highest grossing film today worldwide (making 55 mil more than Arrival), earned 2 Oscars and critical and public acclaim.

Covenant received mixed critical (slightly less then Prometheus), worse public reception and made less money then it''s predecessor, even thou it had Alien in it's title and was clearly marketed as a prequel.

All in all, I don't know how a direct continuation of Prometheus would have went down but it is clear that money was more important than making something interesting/new.

I agree with you that Bladerunner 2049 is a very good movie with the same atmosphere as the original Bladerunner (neo-noir). The genre might be called sci-fi drama (with lots of action as well)? The movie wouldn’t attract people who prefer (kitchen sink) realism, but otherwise, both women and men, as well as intellectuals and more plain action seekers, would be sufficiently satisfied? But still, it wasn’t a great success economically (worse than AC) and the original BR wasn’t either.

We have roughly the same questions in BR49 as in Prometheus/AC and (apart from religious and philosophical reflexions about our place in the universe, about life and death, creation etc) the main focus has come to be AI (synthetics/replicants - David/K) and questions about a soul, free will etc and about moral/ethical questions. As I see it, they are focused very much on the development of the main character (although David technically speaking is the antagonist he has in a way become the protagonist. There isn’t so much of character development in either Shaw nor Daniels, is there?)? K develops from bad to good whereas David goes the other way?

In both films, we have the love drama between humans and synthetics/AI (with implanted memories) - K/Joi and David/Shaw. But as I see it, in BR49 you have many characters around the main characters who serve different purposes: good/bad, helping/obstructing, sacrifice/victims, funny/irritating and if we compare this to a sequel with only David and Shaw (and an antagonist probably in the form of engineers) there would be no supporting characters filling up different needs in order to make a dynamic, exciting movie? There are, of course, interesting, good movies/books with (almost) only one character like “Robinson Crusoe” and “Castaway” (although in the latter you also get to follow the main character’s wife struggling with her life and his disappearance).

So, could a sequel to Prometheus which served as a continuation of the relationship between David and Shaw which could develop either into love or hate (or both), Shaw seeking the answers to her religious questions and David seeking himself, become interesting? Well, of course it could, but would it give the production company its money back? Probably not?
