Good post neurion, your closing comments are interesting regarding Prometheus explaining the great mystery of alien it could just be that your left with more questions than direct answers.

FOUND PROOF TODAY THAT SCOTT HIMSELF AS EARLY AS 1984 SAID THE HOME WORLD OF THE XENOMORPH WAS MARS, THAT HE WAS THE LAST SURVIVOR OF THAT PLANET, AND THEN IN 1999 CHANGED HIS MIND AND SAID MARS WAS TOO CLOSE TO EARTH BUT THAT NEVER THE LESS THEY WERE DESIGNED AND CREATED FOR THE SOLE PORPOSES OF BREEDING AND WAR.
"The sequel should explain what the alien is and where it comes from. That will be tough because it will require dealing with other planets, worlds, civilizations. Because obviously the alien did come from some sort of civilization. The alien was presented, really, as one of the last survivors of Mars- a planet named after the god of war. The alien may be one of the last descendants of some long-lost self-destructed group of beings". –1984 Interview with Danny Peary
"I always wanted to go back and make an Alien 5 or 6, where we find out where they came from and go there and answer the question, who are they. Mars is too close so they can’t be, they can’t be gods of war, but the theory was, in my head was, this was an aircraft carrier, a battlewagon of a civilisation, and the eggs were a cargo which were essentially weapons. -1999 Commentary from Alien 20th Anniversary DVD

As far as "canon" goes, I daresay Scott was free to do whatever the hell he wanted in that regard and would discount anything and everything from the AVP spinoffs. I agree with others in the hope that this story will ask more questions than it answers.

Thanks Sparky (may I call you sparky?) You have totally sold it to me. Now which version do I go for? There are 3 that I am aware of, the one with the egg, the one with the alien head or bog standard? Gonna start saving up for a Blu ray player now. OT, will also have to get the Star Wars Blu ray box set.

IGN has the scoop on the release date and details for the Alien Anthology, This six-disc set contains about 60 hours of special features and over 12,000 images, including material from the legendary early 1990s LaserDisc release, the "Legacy" release and the Quadrilogy DVDs. 20th Century Fox claims that the four Alien films have been "reinvigorated for an intense Blu-ray high-definition viewing experience."

The Anthology offers nearly five hours of additional video Enhancement Pods created exclusively for this collection, presenting behind-the-scenes footage, raw dailies and interview outtakes from all four films. The new extras are extensive and excellent. Within the first couple minutes of sampling the new enhancement pods on disc 5, I learned a couple of tidbits I had been unaware of before. These are a wonderful extension of the already superb making-of documentaries. The MU-TH-UR interactive mode is easy to use and will probably prove helpful to those who are only interested in seeing certain parts of the behind-the-scenes material, but I haven't used it much. I've only sampled a couple minutes of the trivia track portion of this feature (titled "Datastream"), but so far it appears as though it will mostly be a re-hash of material you can find in disc 5's documentaries. The set also includes ALL of the extras from EVERY previous release of these films, as promised (at least as far as I can tell), in addition to the extended Alien Evolution and Alien 3 documentaries.
[UPDATE: The extended Alien 3 documentary includes significantly more footage of Fincher directing on the set (lenghtier character discussions with the actors, etc.) and more detail on the schism between him and the studio that I don't remember seeing on the Quadrilogy DVD. At one point during filming you see Fincher get on a microphone and say, "I can't believe Fox is the number one studio because they're all such a bunch of morons." Interestingly, while some of the new footage does reflect poorly on the studio, I think it also makes it easier to understand why some people had trouble working with Fincher. I personally find this longer cut much more interesting, but it hardly feels like an entirely new, revelatory version. Still, if you love a good behind-the-scenes documentary, the extended cut of "Wreckage and Rage: The Making of Alien 3" may help justify the upgrade to bluray.
By my estimate, disc 5 contains around 17 hours of documentaries, including an hour to an hour-and-a-half of new enhancement pods for each individual film (these are mostly extended interviews and production footage). I couldn't even tell you how many hours of content are on disc 6. So it's understandable, due to space limitations, that some of this material still appears to be in standard def. Although it's in SD, most of it has been enhanced so your bluray player will upconvert it (sometimes beautifully so) to fill a widescreen TV. I find the text slides on the still galleries of concept art on disc 6 (which ARE in FULL HD) much easier to read now. In disc 5's docs, most film clips, production artwork and photos, and many interviews will now fill the screen, while other interview clips appear pillarboxed with new imagery to the right and left instead of black bars (similar to the "Disneyview" feature on the Snow White and Pinocchio blurays, though mostly much less distracting than those were). It all looks good enough that I don't think many people will be too disappointed that some of these extras are still in SD.
BOTTOM LINE: The extras, both new and old, are a substantial improvement over the Quadrilogy DVD set (at least IMHO, your mileage may vary). I doubt many people will feel shortchanged here.]
[UPDATE 6: I've found more new extras on disc 6. There are some deleted scenes from Aliens, at least one of which - featuring Burke in a cocoon - I don't think I've seen before. The Patch and Logos image gallery will be appreciated by folks who love all the costuming/set dressing details. There's a video reproduction of a ride called "Aliens: Ride At The Speed of Fright" which is notable for two things: it's REALLY cheesy, and it features a very young Jeffrey Combs (I think this part is new - I don't remember seeing it on the DVD). The Parodies section is just some Alien-related clips from Spaceballs and Family Guy. You'll also want to keep an eye out for Easter Eggs on this disc.]
The set has a couple of impressive surprises that weren't mentioned in any of the studio press releases I've seen. Disc Unbound is an automatic feature: when you eject any disc from this set, the Weyland-Yutani logo will pop up on screen. You can then insert any other disc from the set and you'll go straight to the main menu - it will skip over all the studio logos and FBI Warning screens, making an Alien marathon slightly faster and less annoying.
I was aware that this set would include isolated score tracks for all four films (as well as alternate score tracks for the first two), but was unaware that you can also access each piece of music in any order from an index which includes even more unused music. I'm not certain, but I think I may have even spotted a couple of Bonus alternate tracks for Aliens that weren't even on the Deluxe Edition soundtrack CD.
For those who are hard of hearing, all 4 films and even the extras on discs 5 and 6 include subtitles in around 15 languages, including English and Spanish. Even the audio commentaries have subtitles in multiple languages! Each film also has multiple language audio tracks, though it appears that only the English receives a lossless one.
The packaging is the most elegantly beautiful I've ever seen for a bluray set. Inside the slipcase is a hardcover book with each disc held securely within its own page. These pages include photos from each film, as well as some basic info like plot synopses and director's credits. There's also a booklet and insert tucked in the back which explain how MU-TH-UR mode and Disc Unbound work, and list the content on each disc. It also has a note from Ridley Scott filled with tantalizing hints about what to expect in his upcoming prequel. Everyone will be happy to know that the package is very compact and will fit perfectly next to your other blurays. It's the same size as the Close Encounters of the Third Kind bluray, except that the spine is a little thicker since it holds more discs.

The new anthology is the absolute best film boxed set ever unleashed. I owned the Legacy and Quadrilogy sets and neither even compare to the quality, love and attention that this set has been given.
Not to mention that every frame of the original Alien has been cleaned, optimized and restored for HD. This alone makes the purchase (now going rate of $40 all region version or the US which retails now for about $60) amazing.

The Alien Anthology is AMAZING. The quality is well worth the price and the artwork and design of the Anthology boxset is well worth it. Blu-ray players are MUCH MUCH cheaper now then they were back then. You can easily get a blu ray player nowadays anywhere from 50-100 bucks and new blu-ray movies are about 20 to 25 bucks brand new. I have a 55 inch LED Samsung tv with a Samsung blu ray player. My GOD the Anthology is fucking awesome on blu-ray and especially on a 55 inch LED Samsung tv.
If you can. Save up and get a blu-ray player if you don't already have one but you can't leave out a good quality tv like Samsung if you are going to get one. Also I have a Subwoofer which really adds that extra BOOM and BASE. If you truly want the hi-def experience your going to have to be willing to spend the money. Good quality doesn't come cheap and for the Alien Anthology..its DEFINITELY worth it!!

Cheers guys, I think i will get the Anthology box set, just seen the prices for the one with the egg and i cant really justify paying over £100 for it, considering a blu ray player is going to cost me about £70 and surround sound kit will be about £30. I have a 32" full HD tv and a gold plated HDMI cable that I use for my xbox 360 so I wont need to buy another. I'm also moving in may and will be upgrading to a 50 or 60" 3dtv when I get into my new place, doing an Alien marathon with that kinda set up will be 'effin awesome.
ReplyRipley Clone 8Alien Movies ForumBlu Ray vs DVDJan 1, 2012
Its truly amazing. Yes, HDMI is the only cable input you should be using to achieve the greatest amount of High Definition. There's still a majority of people out there who will say, "But blu-ray is too expensive...oh and you can't even tell." Honestly thats just uneducated bull. You need the right equipment for blu-ray and one of the BIGGEST factors in getting your blu-ray quality to stand out is the quality of your tv set. 32" is not bad at all. Brand can also be a factor. As of right now Samsung offers the best quality televisions out there as far as durability, picture quality, sound quality and every other option above. I'm surrounded by friends and family who STILL don't own a blu ray player or even buy blu-ray movies. They are really missing out. And its funny because when we watch blu ray films on my 55" Samsung LED tv there just blown away by it. And so far i've convinced some of my friends to get a good tv and blu-ray going for themselves and they didn't regret the decision.
Overall, Blu-ray is MUCH better than DVD. I own the Quadrilogy and the Anthology is by far the winner in every race. Not too far from now DVD's won't even be an option and the rest of this ignorant society will HAVE TO make the decision of buying blu-ray instead. Thank GOD!!

You do have to be careful though. Older films on Blu Ray tend to just be upscaled dvds. You have to look on the back and do a bit of reading to see if the film is just upscaled or fully in HD. A good way of finding this out is if you go to Best Buy and Wal-Mart and you see those cheap bins...like BDs for 7.99-10.99....9 times out of ten they are just glorified dvds in which case it is best not to replace what you may already have. No matter what anybody says, these glorified DVds do not match the quality of a true HD Blu Ray. They will look exactly the same as if you were playing the DVD in the player.
So pretty much any film that was released in theaters since BDs were introduced will be fine. Anything older than say....2007, you want to make sure it is full HD. You will learn all about this after delving deeper into the format once you have it.

I guess it depends on how much disposable income you have but a decent tv and blu ray player is a lot more affordable than it was and prices are coming down all the time .

I've posted this on another part of the board. This is my analysis of the Alien Lifecycle that was used as part of the background material to the Colonial Marines Technical Manual
Alien Life cycle chart
I tried to rationalise the seemingly disparate versions of the lifecycle based on the first 3 films. I posited in associated notes that there was the possibility of an Alien Queen corpse somewhere in the hold of the derelict laying undiscovered

I'm wondering if Ridley Scott is going back to the original Alien film concepts and story, as has been speculated. Remember in the Alien 'special' edition there is the cut scene reinstated where Ripley comes across Dallas cocooned and also what looks like Brett sticking out the top of an egg. I'm guessing that originally the Alien could start some kind of reaction that would transform people into eggs/facehuggers. Brett would have been turned into the egg/facehugger and Dallas would have been the host for the resulting facehugger. The eggs in the cave in the original could be the transformed crew of the derelict. All the crew were changed to the egg state waiting for someone to come to the planet and be infected, then possibly leaving for other planets on whatever spaceship had come to the planet. This would account for no Queen Alien as Scott has stated that the Queen was not his original idea for the Alien lifecycle.

archetech, i couldn't agree more. the brief synopsis provided on the home page states that ridley is going deeper with this movie. i sure hope so. alien 1 was just totally out there for the time. alien 2 was shallow but entertaining. 3 was a nice broody twist on the theme but with nothing much new. 4 contains the seeds of something much bigger that hasn't been explored to my full satisfaction yet. so i hope that prometheus will do that and more, kinda go all metaphysical on us. ;-)

Replyroy battyPrometheus ForumI hope Prometheus is as disturbing....Dec 31, 2011
ArchEtech, you have perfectly identified and articulated my precise same concern. As much of a science fiction fantasy "Alien" was, the brilliance in the story, performances and art direction (as well as the Hitchcock-ian efficiency/editing) was that the combination somehow translated as plausible, and this left an unsettled, disturbing and cold pyschological footprint.
I know there are mixed feelings on "Aliens", but for comparison sake, and while a good and intense movie and entertaining in its own right, that was an example of how the elements I mentioned could be, well, neutered in favor of more linear action, comedy relief, etc. (not an intentional slight on Cameron, I know he was trying to do a different film and story.)
I'm hoping for, at minimum, a balance between those two films, in terms of overall tone. I suspect, for better or worse, with Lindelof involved, there may be more emphasis on character development on this one, which could have unpredictable resonance on whether tone will still be disturbing and unsettling. It could acheive that if we become more vested in the characters as a result, or it could be distracting if excess storylines/dialogue compromises the efficiency that came into play in something like the first "Alien" movie.
ReplySpartacusPrometheus ForumI hope Prometheus is as disturbing....Dec 31, 2011
I hope so too.
At the same time I feel there is NO need to worry and any comparing this project with "crystal skull" is completely, with all due respect to you, unnecessary .
ReplyFrantzPrometheus ForumI hope Prometheus is as disturbing....Dec 31, 2011
I think that we can have a quite precise idea in which category this movie will fall ( from the trailers and from what scott said )
the word "epic" i very important and both good and bad
The Gladiator was "epic" , Star WArs was "epic" ...so a big story , like a narrative book , with alot of interesting characters , many "adventures" and twists , moral decisions and so on ... So will not be "alien" because he know perfectly that is not possibile to recreate that feeling , that innovation ( alien 3 tried hard and partially failed ) and of course cannot be Aliens because that is Cameron's territory .
So will be something "broad" that cannot totally miss ( ridley scott and the cast are too good ) but can miss our "souls " ...but if everything suceed we will have a Classic sci fi movie for the next 50 years (but that almost surely will always be after Alien in our hearts )
ReplySpartacusPrometheus ForumI hope Prometheus is as disturbing....Dec 31, 2011
That's exactly it IMO Frantz, you are dead bang on there, this film will be unique and true unto itself before any and all other things.
Ridley is not some guy you just lightly say, well, he did this and it was crap or he did that and it was crap, of if he does this or that, it's gonna be crap, and for one reason before all others...
To anyone that would even infer such things, please POST FOR ME A LINK TO WATCH THE FILMS THAT YOU MADE THAT WERE BETTER THAN HIS !!!
This guy is in the Top Ten Directors ALIVE on this planet right now !!!
If he says EPIC believe me it's Epic in a Good Way !!!
After what we've seen, IMO you'd have to be "Slow on the uptake" or just plain "Nutz" not to bank on Ridley having a massive hit here!!!
ReplyArchEtechPrometheus ForumI hope Prometheus is as disturbing....Dec 31, 2011
Spartacus - seeing the discussion as an attack on Ridley is rather... Shallow
Of course there is need to worry. Filmaking is not what it was in 1979. Unless Ridley is personally producing the film, there is no telling what outside influence will hinder his vision. My point is, I hope that does not happen. A PG-13 rating would clearly symbolize a sellout, unless our projections of what the film will be ate way off. Although, Ridley is older maybe he's softened up a bit on the twisted sexual, disturbing grossness that is Alien.
Lots of movies that are "hits" simply suck. Fact.
Scott has been involved in some of my favorite movies though, no question.
ReplyFrantzPrometheus ForumI hope Prometheus is as disturbing....Dec 31, 2011
IF Ridley Scott is free to do what he want ...he will do a PG13 ....
To be honest i dont see Alien to be neither gross ( really calling today alien a "gross" movie is out of place ) nether sexual ( but i accept that someone see there many sexual elements ) ANYWAY no any other Scott movies have disturbing ( hannibal felt quite flat ) or Sexual elements ..just watch the entire list .... so who was carryng the disturbing and sexual elements into alien is ...
GIGER !!!!!!!
and since ridley scott is a genius he understood the innovation of the biomechanic , slimy , sensual ( more than sexual to me ) thing ...Without Giger you dont see that elements anymore in any of the other Scott movies .
Hes a raffinate , romantic , emotional , visual teller .
ReplySpartacusPrometheus ForumI hope Prometheus is as disturbing....Dec 31, 2011
I do not see any of this as an "attack on Ridley" at all, but what I truly think since you invited me say what I think of it now, is that the very idea of even thinking to compare this film in any way to Crystal Skull is completely unnecessary and dumb.
Also, from what we have seen so far this film will make "crystal skull" look like a Joke.
Also, I find that so many people out there have these seemingly all knowingly like opinions on the art of film making and then when you confront them on their experience and knowledge of film and where they get half the stuff they are saying from and even they themselves do not know!!!
I did not mean to seem angry or mean, I am just extremely emphatic that we are talking about One of the greatest visionaries in science fiction film making history here who worked with a budget that German Magazine "Blick" still maintains is between 200 and 250 million dollars...and he brought Giger on board to help create the visuals, so I have just one question left to everyone who is worried at all....
Knowing these things in advance f the films release and having seen that trailer...
What exactly is it that is so worrisome about this production now that makes you think it is going to morph into a film of some type that you should be AFRAID of?
Do you really not have any faith after what you have read seen and hear here?
ReplyNachoFleischmanPrometheus ForumI hope Prometheus is as disturbing....Dec 31, 2011
One point to Ridley Scott is that in Quadrilogy Edition Interviews, he said clearly that he would get back to direct a science fiction movie when he found a good story, because that is all: the story to tell. He has waited for more than 20 years, so... go on Sir Ridley Scott!

modern technology just channels fossil-fuels - It isnt really more advanced than nature - it only functions because it can use Oil about 1,000,000 times faster than it forms (e.g. 100's of millions of years of oil formation to power modern technology for 100 years).
The biological weapon might, joule for joule, simply be more efficient than any mechanical tech.
Read up on peak oil - many think all our modern technology won't be viable once this "energy lottery win" runs out. Some say we are literally going back to the stone age, we'll be unable to use metals etc.
biotech - working the way nature does, recycling materials, could outperform mechanical oil fueled tech.
you're right that something at the cellular level would make more sense, but i'll allow them some artistic license for such an amazingly effective film :)

I Just like it
I understand what you mean too, there's no worries at all, I was just confused how I gave the impression I was speculating, but I see that when I wrote "Please" It gives the impression that I want a mix between both the Alien Film and something new, but all I meant was I wanted to see the video of this again !!!
I'm just having fun today given the New Year is upon us and all man.
My apologies if my wording of things caused you any annoyance in any way at all.

Nope, I was the one that caused confusion. The link didn't register with me the first several times I looked at the thread some reason. Sorry! :P ;)
And I agree, it is a pretty cool video.

Well unless the SJ is a renegade - then the warning would make sense. maybe the SJ stole the weapon/bio-tech to destroy it and make sure it was never used? He got infected, and programmed a warning to stay away after either crashing the ship on purpose or because a bug was burrowing out of his stomach.

I may be wrong, but the xeno that laid all those eggs in the derelict had to be what burst out of SJ chest. They weren't already there. Something went wrong. And SJ got a taste of his own medicine either by a screw up or by Prometheus crew sabotage.
This is why the xenos from alien on look the way they do- biomechanical. The question of what came first, the face hugger or the queen is going to be answered. Probably neither, that goo in the ampules must have properties that make it programmable by the SJ race.

i think the crux of the story should transcend all the bio-mechanical/bio-tech weapon theme and explore what the hell is really going in the farthest reaches of space. whether it was cargo or not, is irrelevant. what would be more interesting is finding out that not only within this galaxy, but across multiple galaxies there is a hierarchy of space faring species and survival of the fittest is still in full swing as they all engage in the worst predatory practices you can think of... and they are headed this way again. i posit that the previous extinction event was due to one of their pods crash landing on earth maybe.

"i posit that the previous extinction event was due to one of their pods crash landing on earth maybe."
-They would have to come up with evidence for this in the movie.

I do NOT. I say This EVENT you speak of IS...One of The Prometheus Crew Stealing some of the Ampules, the Engineer's loaded up the Derelict with Ampules programmed with the genetic code of the Xenomorph and sent it on a coarse for earth for the sole purpose of destroying it. It somehow gets intercepted, perhaps IMO by The Company before it reaches earth and crashes on LV-426. The signal was tripped intentionally by the "Jockey"and intended for The Engineer's so that they would know he was unsuccessful and that something had gone wrong with the Ampules, thus the burn on the hull and nest of eggs on LV-426. One of the programmed Ampules at least, was for a Queen...and we will probably not SEE any of this, it will be inferred! The stuff after it crashes that is!
I am well aware this theory of mine does not take time travel into account and I reason that the company has a way to instantly communicate with it's fleet and perhaps this is done through the use of the whichever Androids capabilities they have planted on each of this fleets ships.
