Who is to say that there are not civilizations out there that are not billions of years old. They could be the size of insects on earth or the size of a building...The variance in size and intelligence of living things on this planet is broad. What would it be like on other worlds......

If it is true that life came for some other place, then it is possible all life in space came from one place at some point, that if of course life can just spontanesly exist due to certain conditions magically arising or not . If there is any life at all most of it would probably be fungus..Making it more likely that Intelligent fungus beings building a space ship to visit earth and hang out on holiday but we wouldn't know it. But if the earths and the heavens were at one point together it might be impossible to know what that was like with out a time machine cause the physics of the universes at that point would have been not so aged and vibrantly not so physical.

frantz, the brutality of the roman empire reflected the moral and scientific understanding of the times. you are right in saying that the penchant for bloodthirst is a fundamental human condition not exclusive to the romans. and in post enlightenment, post modern times, these violent impulses manifests itself in the huge audience for violent sports like boxing, mma or wrestling. these have become the new bread and circus.

As i have said before...How does one deliver a thriller/horror/sci-fi in a convincing way and make it successful in that scare you shitless way that Ridley wants...I dont think it can be done...I mean Texas chainsaw has two scenes..maybe 3 of blood in it..the rest is suggestion..and yet it was banned !! Now we live in a world where PG-13rs are a bit more desensitized to violence but could you imagine Texas chainsaw getting a pg-13 rating? I mean the original Psycho has a rating of 15 !!! and that was the classification in 2003! The rating if there is only one cut is a worry..but to be honest I just wanna see this Mofo ASAP

The problem with the films you mention is their reputation. IMO Texas Chainsaw Massacre was a badly shot, badly scripted and badly acted shockfest. IMO Psycho is a tame and conservative story that never delves into the sick, depravity of the main character. IMO The Exorcist is a slowly paced, methodical showcase of middle class family life with 20-30 minutes of chills. Because these films recieved bad reputations at the time of their release they are viewed as nasties, when in reality they were pathetic and shameless attempts at controversy. You don't need blood, guts, profanities, sex and nudity to scare, unedge, chill and horrify. Look at films such as Arachnophobia (people scratch), Carrie (that hand still makes me jump), The Shining (the paranoia and loneliness), hell the infamous radio broadcasts of War Of The Worlds. Intrigue - suspense - wonder/horrify/scare. Its a simple equation that all storytellers have been using for centuries - Pull the audience in, get them on the edge of their seats and then hit 'em, or maybe not hit 'em but play with them, and then hit 'em.

Blood and guts were used to amazing effect in the original "Alien" kitchen scene, and there wasn't anything subtle about that sequence, in terms of how it was presented. After that, Scott didn't really need to show us the after-effects of the retractable alien jaw, punching through skulls. The audience filled in those blanks for itself. Judicious use of graphic gore can be effective, though more often than not, it's over used to the point that it becomes desensitizing. Carpenter's remake of "The Thing" is a notable, rare exception to that rule, IMO.

as I said earlier somewhere follow me here please... Let's assume I am not 49 Let's assume I am in that particular demographic that FOX loves so much and seems to make the Bible of their very existence...let's assume I am a bright eyed angst filled 13-19 year old Male in Europe or America !!! Am I going to be more attracted to a movie rated 14+ or one rated PG13 ...? Food For Thought !

If you're a fan, the DVD or Blu-ray is a no-brainer. These days, studios know that both they and their audience can have their cake and eat it too. As a single example, Prometheus will look and sound better in my dedicated HT, than any commercial theater in my area. I'll probably go see the first midnight showing just for an audience experience, but watching all alone will probably be much scarier.

@Snorkelbottom..I hear what your saying dude...But carrie..didnt simply use suspense..nor did the shining...there were quite graphic scenes of blood in those too. Not to mention psychological terror you couldnt put those in front of a 13 yr old.. I will agree that suspense can be delivered without an R cut but its to what degree it is efffective. i Guess its relative to the times we live in..War of the worlds was a success because it relied soley on voices to paint a picture...I mean if there were visuals you would have known it was bullshit. Which I guess is a good argument for a good story teller...if you can tell it in the rght way you will deliver? I just dont think it will on the Scary front..Dont get me wrong...I like the rest on here have been waiting so long for this..I dont think there is much to be disapointed with..tis my fave film...But in terms of thriller and being scared..I doubt it..but i will stand corrected..I just dont think it can deliever on a pg-13 thriller... IMO Texas chainsaw aint shot or cut badly...and the whole violence/guts/shock value...well it works for me...Look at switchblade romance..In my opinion the finest horrors ever so far..and the opening 20 minutes is total gore....but so well put together and a great story..

The most terrifying scene for me in Carrie, wasn't the hand at the end although it was fun and my popcorn ended up in the lap of the old lady behind me...or even the scene in the kitchen where she telepathically kills her Mom...it was the scene in the gymnasium, when she starts to use her powers by locking all the doors and windows...you hear this hum in the background score that I Loved...made the whole thing much more dramatic and more importantly, scary for me than had it not been there. Imagine that, the background effect music made a difference in how scared by the film I was.

I would think 20th CF would haven given Ridley a lot of lattitude to make the film he wants. Look at the runs on the board the guy has. He would have filmed exactly what he wanted to film and then decided how far to go during the editing which would be happening with CGI production as we speak. I would also guess he would have been given quite amount of creative control for the upcoming editing process as a condition of him taking the helm to direct. Regardless I think the movie will make a shed load of money.

Personally I don't think you have much to worry about when it comes to the rating the film will get. Like in Alien there was only one really gore filled scene in the whole move, and the rest of the thrills was psychological. And as some have said Ridley has a tremendous track record with his films, and the studios will I am sure not overlook that and give him leeway that they would not give someone else. Given the standards in which films are rated in the North America I am certain we will see all the thrills we can handle in this film. I say this as I have watched this documentary called "This Film Is Not Yet Rated". And in it the people that rate the film seem to be far more concerned with sex and depicted sex over gore and thrills. So get ready people for a amazing scare fest!! I hope I am not being overly optimistic lol!!

I have to say this is no surprise and I am quite happy there is no real connection with the Alien movies. The Alien franchise is long since dead I have been harking on about this for the past month on this site. No money in xenos so Fox wont touch it. Scott want go there either because it would ruin his name. Think about it as a big new venture where there is lots more to explore going in new directions. So long as some answers come in relation to Alien how and why etc I'll be more than happy. I too am really looking forward to it.

@ MCAID - I have been stating from the off that IMO this is exactly what Prometheus will be, which is the impression given to us by Ridley and "that LOST guy" Damon Hasslehoff (or something) - That Prometheus is set within the same universe but the events depicted within not only preceed Alien but head in a direction completely different to Alien, inspired by the ideas and notions that were the original driving forces of Alien (sex, life, death, ancient aliens etc.), that were later abandoned by the sequels for a more mainstream franchise. Think of it this way - The Alien franchise stems from Prometheus, as will a new, original and more epic franchise dealing with the issues of gods and engineers. Prometheus is the trunk of the tree, the Alien franchise was/is but one of the branches, Prometheus will give the choice of many other branches... if you follow my meaning.

First post here- Been a lurker for a long time now. The "top" of the map room looks quite a bit like the hole in the floor from the previous pics. Maybe one of the crew entering into it was what set the off the hologram? guessing this is the map to the SJ planet? Makes me wonder just which of the pics are from what is found on earth as well as what is found on the SJ planet...

The scenes of people flying about are most likely 2 things. 1 - the planet they land on has a) low gravity b) high winds 2 - the burned man being levitated in front of the green screen is most likely someone being picked up or grabbed by something (with the thing picking him up to be added in post)

Yeah, I was talking about what people keep referring to, as the "derelict." If it was under power, it should be moving much more quickly, relative to the human figures in space-suits trying to get out of its' way. If it's simply falling from a holding/docking cradle due to the effects of ( lower?) gravity, what we see in that clip might make sense, but not if it's had time to build up any ( ramming? ) speed from some distance in the atmosphere or beyond.
Reply
GavinPrometheus ForumLevitation ???
@ artyoh - No offense, but this whole point you have raised is nitpicking, especially when no-one outside the films crew knows the details of why it is "seemingly" moving slowly. There could be a whole bunch of reasons for this, that we will not find out about for six months.
Reply
artyohPrometheus ForumLevitation ???
I was responding to folks who said they think it's the "derelict" or the "prometheus" being deliberately crashed into lv426. We're actually in agreement. No one really knows for sure what it is, why it's falling/moving, or if it's under any kind of control. All we have is speculation.
