A spanking new ship that will see it's first and last voyage, kind of like Titanic. We all know that the Chinese made the Prometheus..probably, Nissan or Toyota, just have to look for the emblem somewhere on the ship...

Actually Nissan and Toyota are Japanese Companies...but it would probably be manufactured by Yutani...the fictional Japanese company. Probably not going to be built by Ford, Ferrari, or White Star Line...who built TITANIC.

In my travels in the internet I came across an odd picture of Michael Fassbender with the all white helmet from the Nostromo on. They are conveniently large and glassy to see the actors face and it sure looked like him. I have since mysteriously lost the link: perhaps there is someone else out there who can identify this. ReplyJuggernautPrometheus ForumFace Huggers and UrnsDec 16, 2011
Hi, all. This is my first post, I am shedding my status as a lurker. There is something in the alien lifecycle which is nonsensical.... What relation, in a genetic sense, does the facehugger bear towards its "offspring" ? In all observable parasitic lifecycles , The parent injects its eggs into the corpus of the host. since the facehugger is the parent of the imago, or "chestburster", and the Queen, or Alien "warrior" is the parent of the egg, why the facehugger? It dies upon "inseminatinion" of the host. It appears to be a necessary stage in reproduction. It would make sense if the faechugger itself became the chestburster, but this is not the case. Instead, it acts as a motile "sperm". It is in fact the parent of the chestburster,. The queen or warrior is not. It becomes more confusing when you consider that the "cocooning" process was the original vector for turning the host into an egg, but how is the facehugger created via this process? Why wouldn't the alien directly deposit its genetic material into to the host to replicate itself? The lifecycle seems contrived, and energy inefficient. What am I missing here?
Reply BiomechanicPrometheus ForumFace Huggers and UrnsDec 16, 2011
lol, juggernaut you are not missing anything because the life cycle is contrived. We must remember this is just a movie.
What I am hoping is that the alien itself tinkers with the genetic material adding a little bit of itself to it's victims and transforming them into facehuggers and the seed sac that contains it. A mixing of three species and a totally alien concept? This would mean either the facehugger that attached itself to Cain was either once human or some other alien species. If it was a 3rd species like spaejockeys the genetic mixing could be exponential. I am thinking Prometheus will clear that up a bit. I have my suspicion those eggs were made from a large group of people in hypersleep on one of the ships in Prometheus but could have a very diverse history of genetic mixing that could go back eons.
ReplyAgent MothmanPrometheus ForumFace Huggers and UrnsDec 16, 2011
Well, the facehugger does look more like a space jockey in terms of color and texture. Perhaps you are on to something.

Hi Snorklebottom,
Seems to me that the word “canon” gets thrown around quite a bit, in regard to film franchises…let’s explore that for a moment.
can•on
1. an ecclesiastical rule or law enacted by a council or other competent authority and, in the Roman Catholic Church, approved by the pope.
2. the body of ecclesiastical law.
3. the body of rules, principles, or standards accepted as axiomatic and universally binding in a field of study or art: the neoclassical canon.
4. a fundamental principle or general rule: the canons of good behavior.
5. a standard; criterion: the canons of taste.
Origin:
before 900; Middle English, Old English < Latin < Greek kanṓn measuring rod, rule, akin to kánna cane
Canon - definition:
This word is derived from a Hebrew and Greek word denoting a reed or cane. Hence it means something straight, or something to keep straight; and hence also a rule, or something ruled or measured. It came to be applied to the Scriptures, to denote that they contained the authoritative rule of faith and practice, the standard of doctrine and duty. A book is said to be of canonical authority when it has a right to take a place with the other books which contain a revelation of the Divine will. Such a right does not arise from any ecclesiastical authority, but from the evidence of the inspired authorship of the book. The canonical (i.e., the inspired) books of the Old and New Testaments, are a complete rule, and the only rule, of faith and practice…
OKAY THEN…WHEW!
Thing is…people choose their film allegiances similarly to the way the choose their faith or religion…or lack of religion. Come to think of it…it’s a very analogous paradigm. Some cling to the old, some reach for the new, while others are somewhere in between. It’s like the ancient debate, between Judaism and Christianity…or Catholicism and Protestantism. Both believe that they’re right. But those are religions…involving past history…and super natural “All Powerful” beings. There my be an actual right and wrong.
So, as far as applying the word “canon” to fictional media, movies, books, video games, etc. is concerned…it’s kind of a leap or a stretch…in MY humble opinion. I know it used often…but I think used abusively and inappropriately.
In the end…it’s art. And, like any other art…the beauty is in the eye of the beholder. FOX and the filmmakers are making this stuff up as they go. Behold, FOX ALMIGHTY said: “Let there be PROMETHEUS”…and so it is. If this was something like the Lord of the Rings films…then I think…maybe one could apply the word Canon. Those were previously written works being developed into films. With the ALIEN films…each one is its own creation…a child born of different parents.
As for me, I enjoy the films with ALIEN being excellent, and the subsequent films decreasing in quality in release order, with AVPR being the least quality. Now, because I tend to love all things ALIEN related, I can’t help but be attracted to all the films, even the weakest ones. But, “Mentos”…in a previous post, pretty much stated my exact feelings in regard to the ALIEN and AVP franchizes. However, I'm glad that there are a lot of fans who totally enjoy some of the more recent films and ideas...even if I was seriously disappointed.
Ya know…I’m probably gonna be pissed that PROMETHEUS is gonna explain away TOO much of the ALIEN mystery, that I’ve enjoyed since I was 12 years old. Oh well…C'est la vie.

Personally, I am a bit tired of the hatred towards ALien3 (and Resurrection, for that matter).
Aliens was great upon release but to me it has not aged well. The humor is too sophomoric and the entire "tough guy" aspect of it is tiresome. I am not saying I dislike it by any means but I do actually prefer Alien 3 over Aliens and here is why.
Ridley Scott created an uncompromisingly bleak and terrifying film that was based on tension and incredible designs. The movie moved at a snails pace (compared to todays ADD inflicted jump cuts and edits) and when the payoff scenes came, they were really effective. You saw very little of the Alien and it was extremely hard to kill.
Flash forward to Aliens. The tension was replaced with action. The character development was replaced with humor and one liners. The aliens themselves were reduced to ants and easily done away with using a few rounds of bullets. It also ended with what has become a somewhat boring standard of Cameron films.
Then Alien 3 comes along and goes back to the single Alien format. They kill the remaining characters from Aliens...why? because this series as it was, is about Ripley. Not about her becoming a mother to some annoying kid. Not about her being a girlfriend to some Marine, but it is about the link and story of her and this alien race. Alien 3 introduced a prison planet that seems like it fits right in with Scotts bleak universe. You get to know enough about the characters to almost like a few (just like the original......the only completely likable character to me was Dallas and then Ripley). I may not agree with how the cgi looks and some of the set-ups but I enjoy the film. Especially the extended version with the re-inserted effects as opposed to all of the cgi stuff. The film is bleak, sad, depressing and claustrophobic . It also has an incredibly understated, yet perfectly dramatic score.
Anyway, I ranted long enough. I like all four films in this series a great deal. I am excited beyond words for Prometheus. I just get tired of people acting like it is an automatic thing to hate Alien 3 and Resurrection. I haven't touched on the 4th film but I do enjoy it as well.
ReplyMicro changes in air densityAlien Movies ForumAlien3 "reboot"?Dec 16, 2011
For me Alien3 was disappointing but not rubbish. I believe the script was rewritten about 100 times and directors came and went like bees to a hive. By the time it got started it was doomed. Apparently during the production it was also ravaged by changes. I read several of the original screen plays and they were quite different to the film. It also came after one of the best action films of all time Aliens. The director was a rookie and the CGI was not convincing. Some good characters in it though.
ReplyEnderAlien Movies ForumAlien3 "reboot"?Dec 16, 2011
Miser!!!! Did you just say Aliens has not aged well???? Are you insane? The film is nearly 30 years old and still looks amazing. The DESIGN alone in this film is monumental. Its every prop and model makers bible and that’s just one tiny aspect. The cast and script have sent shock waves through every sci-fi medium from video games to comics. The film is arguably THE defining sci-fi film of the 20th century and easily Cameron’s magnum opus. It cannot be compared to Alien 3 and btw I actually like A3 and loved Resurrection but they simply to not operate at the same level as the first 2 films.
You say the franchise theme isn’t about Ripley becoming a mother - it's ALL about her being a mother. You say it shouldn't be about her having a marine bf - what about Clemmens?? You're seriously mixed up man and you've actually upset me a little bit, I'm blowing into a paper bag as I type ;-)
Point is - Yes I agree A3 and Resurrection get a bad rap when they shouldn’t but this is no reason to elevate them to comparison with the greatest movies off all time Alien and Aliens.

Ender:
Get a grip buddy. I was just stating my own opinion as to how I felt about the films and why it is annoying that people just toss aside the last two films. It is how I see it. So take your upset and irritation elsewhere. I will be honest here. I know way more people who feel the same as I about Aliens than don't. Once again, it is the thought that everybody automatically agrees with these sentiments that is bothersome. You do not have to agree with me....such is the object of free thinking but you cannot criticize my feelings for these movies either.
You are missing the point though, I love all of these films but in order of liking for me it goes Alien (above and beyond all of the sequels), Alien 3, Aliens and the Resurrection. See? the key words used here are "for me".
BTW, Aliens is not really sci-fi. It is more action/adventure since there is very little science involved in the film. I wont disagree that some of the work in it was groundbreaking.....but so was work on Avatar..and THAT is a pitiful excuse for a film. AT least Aliens has substance and characters (albeit thinly developed).

I would go even further and say Alien 3 is in fact considering the GARBAGE that Fincher was put through by the suits at FOX, an Incredible accomplishment.
It bothers ME to no end that people knock the last 2 films simply because they didn't like the plot...too bad...fact is, they're BOTH very well made movies and unique in their place in the Alien Franchise.
Please Do not lose site of the fact that this is a Franchise of 4 Films we are discussing here. Not 4 Stand Alone Films, I mean come on, how many Franchise Films do you know of where there are 4 Academy Award quality Films made out of 4? And in all cases, isn't it true that the first one was always the one we say was the best? The other 3 just couldn't have been made without it right?
How many of these groups of films do you know of that people FLOCK to go see like we all did for ALL 4 OF THESE !!!
Alien Resurrection was a whopping success financially speaking!!!
I have personally always accepted the 4 films for what they are on their own.
I also am being serious when I say that 3 and Resurrection added some very unique ideas and even more so, some things were done with camera work in both films that was both ground breaking at the time, and still quite remarkable to see today, and even more so on the Special Extended Editions on the Quadrilogy Box Set !!!
You cannot really be a true Alien fan if you haven't, by now, found some really cool things to like about Alien 3 and Resurrection, at the very least they gave us all something, more of this universe Ridley and Giger created and that we all love so much to this day !!!
ReplyGuestAlien Movies ForumAlien3 "reboot"?Dec 16, 2011
I really like what Spartacus says, that you have to just value each of the 4 movies on their own ways. All of them have different styles, because the director puts them into their own atmosphere; its like four different painters put on canvas the same theme, each will have their own values. And Alien 3 is painted with David Fincher's style, and it is unique, and fresh.

ReplyRbrown_0202Prometheus ForumLambert answered?Dec 15, 2011
I personally think it was to add suspense "will Ripley be able to save her before she is killed" type of thing . I think it killed her by a stab through the lower back, in all the books I have read they have never hinted to anything that would suggest that a Alien would Sexually violate someone. Heck according to the books most of the time the Queens are able to reproduce without mating but in one of the books it does state that their are such things as male Aliens and they compete for the Queens affections then she "courts" them which involves throwing him around a bit and if he survives they mate if not he dies and she impregnantes herself so yeah, I don't see any stock in the whole the Alien raped her ideas.
ReplyRbrown_0202Prometheus ForumLambert answered?Dec 15, 2011
I have to admit my post int his just a bit ago is based on books and what not, I have not seen the extras on the Quadrilogy and based on what Sparticus has said I think it is possible but one question I admit I have read a lot tonight in this and the other threads but could it the Alien did need to regenerate as someone said and that is why it had to violate her to get a enzyme or something. I also find it interesting what the commentary says because during the time this movie came out there is no way the movie would have been released if it featured homosexual scenes or inter species sex, at least not in theaters and such heck that movie would probably never have been allowed to be released I the US with that in it. I maybe rambling now though lol.
Thank you for your transcipting of the commentary it has given me a lot to think about.
ReplyRbrown_0202Prometheus ForumLambert answered?Dec 15, 2011
Also it is my belief that the gout of flame that almost got Ripley is the result of her shutting down the coolant system. It would be my guess that some of the hoses carries flammable gasses in them and one burst due to pressure and was ignited by a off screen source or maybe even by Ripleys own flamethrower.

I think the spider wasp is probably the closest to the Alien life cycle. The female injects the egg into the abdominal area and when it grows it eventually kills the spider and is born. I am unaware of any creatures in the animal kingdom that has a living egg barer that the only purpose of it is to find a host.

ReplyGuestPrometheus ForumPrometheus/Alien Tie In... Possibly!?Dec 15, 2011
That's a cool find, one I'd thought about as well. However, if you read a bit later in the book, when Kane has descended into the lower levels of the ship (or beneath the ship), he equates the "fresh" eggs found there with the empty urn found by Dallas. I think the intent from the book was that Dallas had found what was ultimately an opened egg.
It's still interesting though, and I wonder if the novel provided any of the ideas and concepts ultimately showing up in Prometheus. Since the Space Jockey isn't in the book either, there's a better chance of finding clues in some of the discarded ideas presented in "The Book of Alien" or discussed in the featurettes on the Blu-Ray set.

I don't think this is as much a prequel as it is a side-story that takes place before Alien.
You can have new movies with different plots, different characters, and different creatures and have it based in the Alien universe.
A good example of this would be the movies Blade Runner and Soldier. Both movies take place in the same universe. Ridley Scott will probably do a much better job than Paul Anderson and I think Prometheus and Alien will be similar.

I think that Prometheus may enlighten some people to the Alien franchise. More exposure to the xenomorph legacy. And to Dark Horse Comics...
This installment of the Alien legacy is very interesting... a "new insight" to what was given to us in the first Alien comic Book from Dark Horse. Actually, maybe it was the second.
I was hoping there would be some connection to "Aliens : Earth War" comics when I initially heard about this movie. However, I think that AVP took that and ruined it. Well, not ruined it, rather made it impossible to bring another installment of the xenomorph on Earth. Hmmm....

Good poster. I like it. Just like Scott and Rothman said this is not an Alien movie merely in the same universe as Alien. So it will be liked to Alien. I reckon the less it's tied to Alien the better it will be because Scott wont be chained with past movies. mind you I'm disappointed too as I need to know how it all started. You can see more man detail and it looks like a construct like Frankinstein. So if this is real and I bet it is, the core of the movie is about our creation.
