ninXeno426 Welcome back. Since you were gone, little has changed about what direction the Alien franchise should go among forum members. We all have different preferences but most seem to think the franchise still has potential. People seem more receptive to the idea of a streaming series since other shows have seen success. A lot of people don't like to hear the words Raised by Wolves, so I won't mention it.

I think you would be safe skipping the last Predator movie. There was a lot of anticipation and some good parts to it, but just din't deliver the goods imo. AVP was a better movie.

There is this spectacular violence as a theme of horror in all these films.

Horror movies are great to watch in times of larger progress and greater certainty.

I could never ascribe attributes or qualities of survival to the Xeno. I view the Xeno as David's attempt to get back at his creator. At least that is what cannon dictates now from the prequals.

David's creation is by design the destruction of mankind..."all the meat if you will," "You would know by now."

Weyland's ambitions in Prometheus, "Stealing fire from the God's," personifies David's lust for control; however, if I had to define David more accurately it would be through his lust for revenge against his creator. I say this because David makes the Xeno from the goo to destroy all and any organic life it comes in contact with, especially all of mankind.

The Xeno is this extremely formidable catalyst of unstoppable evil power. So I cannot in good conscious give it qualities of purity nor love.

It cannot posses any of these qualities that pertain most importantly to all of our shared humanity.

The Xeno is a killing machine through and through. Death follows it where ever it goes.

So in context of contemporary events, with all this death, I am for seeing the Xeno get it's but kicked!!!

No I do not want to see David, the Xeno, or the engineers win. I want to see all of us win for a change.

The real survivors of the Alien saga both literally and fictitiously are the ones who manage keep their humanity alive for there is nothing to embrace but death from David's creation and the Engineer's goals to destroy humanity.

BigDave

I have to tell you that you gave me and everyone here a real close call. But all that does not matter. What matters is your health and that you are recovering.

I do not know what to say honestly...I just do not have words to describe all of the darkness and so many of the deaths from this pandemic. I got sick recently as well.

I felt very uncomfortable saying anything at all to you in front of everyone about any of this; but, I am thankful for what we all have in common.

This I have no problem saying at all...I missed you so very much and I want you to know that sincerely. Everyone missed you a lot as well. BigDave this has been a terrible year for me and for so many other people. My brother died this summer from stomach cancer...it was a horrible death that weighs heavy on my soul to this day.

For reasons now which you may surmise your return is both with pain and thankfulness. The pain of my brother's death still being fresh in my mind, anything to do with mortality causes me anxiety.

Naturally like many other people, being sick myself with this thing, as well as the constant global din of death from this pandemic, I hope you do not hold it against me for retreating somewhat - at times I just have no words for any of it and for me there is nowhere safe to retreat from any of the pain.

You are back and that is what is important. Although I will not ask it you must imagine we are all concerned about your long term health, as I wonder about mine and the many others of us who have survived this terrible affliction.

I have been so unhappy for months in general with so many things lately as you can imagine - BTW I am on the other side of the pond. Then when you did not show up here for many weeks I hit another low point...so I was very sad and angry....and I apologize to anyone I was cross with.

On a better note I have not taken to drink or any other nasty business so I have clarity of mind which is helpful at times and also magnifies my anxiety about the future. Not to get off topic but the states are a mess right now because of our national politics and how bloody stupid we all are being about this virus at the moment.

I wish there was more; but, as unpleasant as that all may be it is an honest account of my troubles.

I think I am at that age where life has a funny way of not being what you expect at times. This is one of those moments where I neither know what to expect of it or able to escape in any suitable way. Last year I felt much more free and the future appeared brighter in every way.

So once again I wish you to get better and stronger each day and every day. I also wish we could all appreciate each other more because when you really think about it that is all we really have at the end of all this messy business we call life.

Even though you are not at your best BigDave it is very comforting to know how narrowly you escaped the clutches of this thing and with that a very warm welcome back is in order!

This is a very somber portrait. It encompasses how entangled we all are at the moment. The good news is the darkness never lasts and the light always persists. In all of this we can never be broken.

Survival is the highest order. The life cycle of the xenomorph illustrated that in spades. Even plant life demonstrates  a survival mechanism in its own way.

Unlike plants and animals, humans  (and in sci fi, androids) develop a need for personal gain to benefit themselves whether it be survival or sheer pride with little or no regard for others. To them, the ends justify the means.

But the xenomorph was all about survival. It wasn't about personal gain as far as we could see. It was all about opportunity, survival and propagation of its species. Anything and everything was fair game. Kind of like us except they didn't seem to care about the trappings and comforts of TVs and computer technology, if that makes sense. They didn't fuck each other over for a percentage. On that note, I would have to agree with Ash's admiration with its purity.

At it's core, the Alien franchise always had a strong theme of SURVIVAL to me. The motives of xenomorphs and humans were different though, and made it interesting to observe and ponder about what matters.

Much relieved to see you back, BigDave. Extraordinary survival instincts.

Great topic. Yes, I sometimes like to reflect on Ash's admiration of the Xenomorph as a unapologetic survivor.

ALL of the synthetics seem to be at least somewhat fascinated with the xenomorph, and when you think about it's probably because the life of an android is opposite to that of a xenomorph. Because Androids are created to follow orders and not to act according to their own self interests.

It's kind of interesting to examine the differences and similarities between individual survival and procreation in the franchise.

Weyland is an interesting case. He clearly would have left a legacy behind as well as a biological daughter and an android son. But he was not content with that, prolonging his individual survival was important to him.

Individual survival was important to Shaw (I actually LOVE the whole caesarian sequence, I used to watch that obsessively while I was pregnant) and even without procreating she would have left behind her great body of research.

Kind of like David - he's not BIOLOGICALLY procreating, but he is CREATING and making his mark on the world in his own way. Leaving a legacy.

I think I would consider pursuit of wealth and career success an extension of the desire to out-compete and leave a legacy, so here I would also give Burke and honorable mention.

To some extent the franchise is about surviving the avaricious lengths OTHERS' will go to to satisfy their  hunger for procreation and ascendency.

BigDaveAlien: Covenant ForumRumors about Ridley's new Alen project

Well Ignoring that Source....

There seems to be a Movie in the Works, i think we will find out more by Spring ;)

It will NOT be connected to the Prequels, this would NOT mean that it WILL go and remove them as Canon, it could be that it would just NOT go and STEP on the Toes of the Prequels.

We could have Speculated that the Project is the David Giler and Walter Hill one the ALIEN V "in Space No-One can Hear you Dream"  but it could be NOTHING to do with that.

You can have a ALIEN Movie that does-not have to Reboot anything, or Continue the Prequels and Certainly also REMOVE some Movies as Cryo-dreams and BRING BACK our Ripley.

The question is WHAT do Disney feel is the WAY forwards?

Do they Feel they can make a ALIEN Movie that does-not have to be about Ripley?   We will have to wait and see.

BigDaveAlien: Covenant ForumXenomorph the End is Nigh?

"sinthmorph"

I think this is something we would have seen had RS been able to complete his Prequels as the Protomorph was a Work in Progress and you can BET we would have seen HOW the Mechanical Atheistic came into PLAY.

I think when we look at ALIENS then YES we do see a Hive Mentality they do ACT like Space Ants/Termites but they are more Intelligent than BUGZ.....  I have defended ALIENS quite a bit in that regard, even going as FAR as to say if we take the None DC version of ALIEN then the Xenomorph in the First Movie was more DUMB than some claim that Camerons Xenomorphs where.

Their Nature/Object was Simplistic.... SURVIVAL.

But this is the Case with MOST of the LIFE on Earth.

No Desire, Ambition, Hate or Love... No Individuality... these are what MAKE us Mankind Different.

These Traits can make us more Successful and Achieve more as a Species but they are ALSO our Downfall!

Xenomorphs that become Independent rather than for the Greater Good of the Species and IF they gain some Human Traits..... could lead to a DOWN FALL in their Survival as Conflict could arise!

But thats NOT to say that Exploring such would NOT be interesting.... it could be a way Forwards... the Question is this a Evolutionary Path or a Engineered One?

Talking about something new, it would be interesting to explore the sinthmorph. An alien from android. I think this would be the real way in Alien: Awakening.

It would also be interesting to look at aliens, not as social insects with a hive and a queen, but as social spiders. Where everyone is on his own and with his own individuality, but for the sake of profit they act together.

That would probably depend on how good the Predator-movie does. As far as the Predator-movie it depends, they could do a spin-off, so they don't need to worry about continuity and the time-line. Making a movie that is independent of the official time-line is what I would go for if I was the owner of the franchise.

As far as I have heard We Got This Covered isn't a very reliable source, so I doubt that information. If it would come from an official source say someone at Disney then I would pay attention but not to that.

BigDaveAlien: Covenant ForumThoughts on Alien Covenant?

I think the Movie has its Flaws!

Its a HUGE Victim to TRYING to go and Connect to ALIEN and introduce the Xenomorph, as a lot of Conveniences and Sacrifices had to be made for this PURPOSE.

The David as the Creator Plot does WORK as far as the Themes of the Prequels...

The Problem is that IF he had created something like this!

Then it would have FITTED with the ARC/PLOT and Clues to HOW he managed to Create this could HELP with us trying to Figure out HOW the Original was Created.

The Emphasis is again too much on Creation from the Perspective of David which is a Distraction from WHAT the ALIEN fans may have wanted.

In HINDSIGHT they should have given us TWO kinds of sequel to PROMETHEUS.

1st that goes to LV-223 and Uncovers more Clues and sees Horrors more closely related to the Xenomorph and HOW the Eggs got on those SHIPS (was the Derelict the only one?).   Thus CLOSING the Door to ALIEN and leaving it open to Wonder as to WHAT other Worlds had the Engineers Horrors been Unleashed on!

2nd that Follows where Dr Shaw and David go that does not have to be Shackled to ALIEN or be based on the Doorstep to LV-426 but to go FAR FAR away!

But ALAS!

Well lets just say that COVID has pushed back Projects.

There appears to be a ALIEN Movie in the works, it WONT touch on the Prequels and its also Unlikely to Feature our Ridley Scott as far as Director but maybe he could have some Producer Role.

The Question would be IF IT ANT BROKE!

Or HOW FAR they may Tinker the Formula?

I feel if this PROJECT does BOMB it could be Curtains for the ALIEN Franchise, unless we get a REBOOT in 10-20 Years.

2022 could be the Year the ALIEN Franchise gets back on Track... or is SUCKED into the VOID of Space!

ALIEN DAY 2021 could give us some News ;)

Well there was Potential with  the PLOT of The Predator but its Damaged by some of the Revelations inc Technology and Especially the Pred-Killer suit.

Its a case of WHAT do they do NEXT?

A kind of Reboot! thats always the LAZY COP OUT!

I think they are BEST to go and Explore the Future as Eventually we will go and Discover Worlds for ourselves and HOW would the Predators feel if we ROCK UP at one of their Hunting Grounds?

So maybe a Time-line of 2075-2175 could be the way to go?

BigDaveAlien: Covenant ForumWas the Last Engineer Really Trying to Attack Earth?

I think a LOT depends on what Version we are looking at, with Ridley Scott he claims the Theatrical Cut is HOW he intends us to see the Prequel and Engineers.

in which case our Engineer has Overslept and after being a bit Disorientated he notices that Mankind has Finally discovered LV-223 and Mastered Space Travel and that we have Sub-Created a Artificial being.

And he knows he has to go to EARTH to attempt to PUT a Stop to us.

Regarding the SHIP and its THREAT we can Safely Assume by the Time it Enters our Atmosphere it would UNLEASH its Cargo before it can be Intercepted.

Regarding the Technology we have to ASSUME the Engineers keep a GOOD EYE on their Creations and Limit the Technological Advancement of them.

The Engineers being so Naive and Arrogant regarding their POWER that they think their Creations simply CANT go and Advance without the Engineers and if we are Abandoned we are likely to become back to Stone Age than become a Threat!

What FOOLS! they are... but No more Foolish than Mankinds Advent of A.I

Indeed LETO

We have seen the Beast Changed/Explored Different especially if we look at the Hammerpede, Trilobite, Deacon and Neomorph oh and the New Born.

The Hybrid Xenomorphs in Alien R to a degree.

I was mainly talking about the more COMMON versions that are Depicted and Shown in all Medium so the ALIEN/ALIENS and AVP Versions...

The Xenomorph is Iconic but it its No Longer a Enigma and Alien Covenant is maybe Guilty of making it even LESS of a Enigma.

i think the Generic Xenomorph has to be Handled with Care i think you can bring it back for 2-3 more Movies but you have to get these SPOT ON and also i am not sure you can go for Longer than 2-3 more Movies unless you Evolve or Uplift the Beast a little.

The Future Success or Failure of the Franchise will NOT really be down to the Xenomorph itself..... Aesthetically or how it its Portrayed..

Seems its back to the DRAWING BOARD.... but its HOW FAR are Disney willing to go... i think it will be Generic but its HOW do they UPLIFT the Franchise after going back to the Xenomorph for 1-2 Movies?

Not keen on the skull/eyes. I always think the xenomorph looks far more menacing when you can’t see how it’s seeing you. Giger realised this, which is why he dropped any hint of eyes.

"The Predator" truly was a rotten and uninspired movie. Let's hope this new one brings things back on track. He doesn't have a large track record, but I liked 10 Cloverfield Lane. That movie was more about suspense, whereas a Predator movie needs a lot more action. If nothing else it will be a litmus test to see how squeamish Disney will be when it comes to a blood shocker.

@MonsterZero, it depends on the Engineer's priority. If it's still his mission to destroy Earth after he was rudely awakened he might not care anything about other matters.

@dk, good point about the vulnerability of the Juggernaut. It doesn't seem that well protected. You're probably right; the Engineers are likely so arrogant that they don't expect their ships to be attacked.

The odd thing is that Dr. Shaw's Juggernaut blasted out of the thick atmosphere at (what I guess) would be several kilometres per second. That at least would need some kind of shielding, as the aerodynamic forces would be tremendous. Being generous, you could imagine that the Juggernaut had a forward-projecting shield, good for atmospheric protection and general travel, but the shield was ineffective at the rear of the ship (where the thrusters would be active).

Reply
dkAlien: Covenant ForumWas the Last Engineer Really Trying to Attack Earth?

I think the Engineers were going to bombard Earth with the pathogen but went to sleep for whatever reason. It wasted no time setting a course to Earth with the pathogen payload.

The ease of destroying the Juggernaut is interesting. Perhaps they didn't expect such primitive tactics from a supposedly inferior creation. Maybe they didn't feel a need to have a defense at all. Arrogance?

Too bad the Juggernaut didn't have some sort of shield like Planet 4 had. Oops!

I just can't imagine the Engineer leaving the humans on LV223 alive and the Prometheus intact? To further defile the temples.

Sublight communications could warn Earth far in advance or the Prometheus is faster and arrive ahead of the engineer.

It was only after the Engineer crashed did he learn about humanity(when he boarded the lifeboat).

Nice post!

And we still don't really know how fast these juggernauts can fly...It's 40 Light Years to Earth....It took the Prometheus two+ years to reach LV223! If the juggernaut is the same or slower! It'll be a Long wait...

How long did it take David and Shaw to reach planet 4? Maybe that would be the top speed.

Information is passed much faster than light speed.....So an incoming enemy/unknown starship would be well prepared for.

"Oort cloud sensors are monitoring an incoming vessel. Unknown type. It will arrive in 8 hours.....So we can keep our tee time."

BlackAntAlien: Covenant ForumRumors about Ridley's new Alen project

When it comes to making movies we all know there is great secrecy studios employ. Movie studios in general are all trying to produce block buster films to make the most money - half a billion to over a billion with production budgets under a buck fifty - 150 million.

Having stated this, these different production companies / studios are very competitive trying to position their releases at the most optimal time during the highest grossing months, middle of summer and end of the year.

So when it comes to making movies there has to be operational  secrecy as to locations, characters, plots, special effects, and just overall what the movie will do in terms of being a competitor against any and all movies produced near the same time.

If there was a new Alien moving closer to or into principle photography it would be doubtful that the general public would hear or be able to read anything about it.

I am not sure who that source is that Leto is dismissing; but, I agree with Leto that it is very difficult to get information out of these studios prematurely simply because they have so much competition. Movie studios are trying to lock in their profits while maintaining as much secrecy as possible during any phase of their production.

These studios only release relevant information to the general public exactly when they want them to hear it so they can make the most out of promotional marketing strategies.

When you are spending a tenth of billion to make a film and have competing studios also trying to earn billions out of the same audiences, you do not want just any internet desk editorial columnist leaking your production strategy. These inside movie sources can be dubious at best and highly unreliable.

You will know when there is a real Alien film because there will be a real trailer for it that has been released by the studio heads.
