@ Bigbirdjimmy - the escape pod thing kinda goes with the nature of the crew. I remember hearing somewhere, being such a bunch of 'space truckers' they only bought an escape pod because of regulations, so they got the cheapest one they could get, thinking they'd never use it.
@ Artyoh - the molting thing would stand for each and every film, thus it seems that it is a thing the Alien can do - I have even imagined what it would look like, and it isn't pleasant.
My gripe is with the Alien itself - in some scenes it looks cool as hell, but in others it looks lame, such as...
- the peek-a-boo with Dallas in the tunnels (give me a cuddle)
- the lame-o sexy dance it does to Lambert
- falling away from the Narcissus, and the engine effect (yawn)
- the scuffle with Parker, it looks like Yaphet actually rips off some of the suit
Another gripe is the first scene where we see the Nostromo complete with refinery floating towards camera with the description at the bottom of the screen, I think that needs to be re-shot it doesn't even look like its from the same film its that degraded.

Sorry, Snorky...I have to disagree with you on the alien itself...nothing about it ever bothered me, none of the scene's you mentioned, any of it. In fact, the peculiarities you mention always served to make it the mysterious, foreign and alien creature that it is for me. It shouldn't feel quite right to us.....because it wasn't meant to. And also, we have to remember that human beings are as alien to this creature as it is to us. The way it approaches Lambert and the slow, methodical approach it takes in killing each of its victims is as much a reflection of its curiosity with its prey.
As to the molting....I always liked that the one phase metamorphosis occured out of site of the audience and is that unbelievable...it adds to the mystery and the validity of the unknownable with this alien thing stalking them in the corriders. The more unimagineable and shockingly different it is to the characters in the situation, the more it affects us as the audience, especially when that alien nature is a function of the film's purpose, execution and delivery.

The rubbery facehugger never bothered me, I can't imagine how else it's meant to fall when it's dead. I just didn't notice it.
Argh, but that damn shrunken Ash-head was such a shame. I saw what the real one was meant to look like from a bonus DVD and it was so convincing compared to Mr. Smiley face.
And Snorkelbottom, you're opening a whole can of worms now! LOL

I personally think that the alien/Lambert sequence works extremely well. She's frozen in abject terror, as the beast casually glides up to her, its' barbed tail rising slowly up to.....?.... then the cut to Ripley, as she hears some very disturbing sounds coming from somewhere inside Lambert .....uh yeah, I thought that was very psychosexually creepy. In fact, I thought that was the creepiest moment in the entire movie. The kitchen scene is obviously more viscerally shocking, but the sounds coming over that intercom just aren't right.
ReplyHukerloverAlien Movies ForumAlien 3 Directors CutFeb 5, 2012
Yer I think this cut is much better, born from an ox not a dog the scene where they trap the Alien only for Golic to let it out again and you dont see the queen born at the end oh yes much better
ReplyCinefanAlien Movies ForumAlien 3 Directors CutFeb 5, 2012
I should probably give it a rewatch. I have heard Directors Cut is better. I love Fincher, but I hated 3. I must be in the minority because except for the design of the hybrid creature I did like Ressurection. I do have the Anthology so I'll check it out definently.

i enjoyed the extra footage in alien 3 quadrilogy. however the score was poor in the end scenes, it looses its rythm with the action and is rehashed for the changes in the scene.
i still think this is one of the best soundtracks of all, epic! - a personal favourite of mine.
ReplycentrosphereAlien Movies ForumAlien 3 Directors CutFeb 5, 2012
I have seen it just three days ago. I have the quadrilogy for some time now, but choose to see "Alien" again and again and again, only now developing the curiosity to see the others (that I saw, of course, at their theatrical premieres _ "Alien" included).
I also never disliked the "3". For me the really better change in the "cut" was the erasing of the queen´s birth in the end, that was somewhat appelative. But the ox-born xenomorph is not a so good idea in my humble opinion; first, because the resulting xeno is actually more dog-like than ox-like; and second because it put at a loss the very first attack, because the inmate was looking for the already dead dog, after all.

So, I could not find my Alien DVD, because I was do for a Alien fix. So, I requested that whoever went to the store to get me another copy of Alien, director cut in Blue ray. What walks in the door? Alien Anthology in Blue Ray with two extra discs. The Scifi gods have smiled upon me. Oh, and I watched Alien last evening in Blue Ray. AWESOME!!

ReplyCBT1979Alien Movies ForumAlien 3 Directors CutFeb 5, 2012
While i think the directors cut was overall
Better, i must admit that the alien
Coming from the ox is not really believable
As the aliem boen from.an ox should be a
larger and bulker alien. But the result was
a man sized alien which was sprinting fast like
A dog.
ReplyEGR101Alien Movies ForumAlien 3 Directors CutFeb 5, 2012
I love Fincher (SE7EN, ZODIAC, PANIC ROOM, DRAGON TATTOO), but ALIEN3 is beset with so many conflicts between the Money People & the Artisan People that the behind-the-scene would probably make a better movie than the movie itself.

Though this Giger mural is quite old this could give some new hints on the film..Am I the only one that sees that the pictured ´person´ to be impreganted clearly looks like the JS with the helmet and trunk? Looks as if they were designed to be impregnated..
ReplyGuestPrometheus ForumThe DuellistsFeb 4, 2012
I saw the Duelists for the first time about a week ago, excellent movie. The cinematography is really nice. I was surprised that Harvey Keitel plays on it, he does a very good job of the bad guy on this one.
ReplyNephilim_LV426Prometheus ForumWhat if David is the SJ?Feb 4, 2012
At 0:36 in the trailer, David extracts packets of green 'goo' from an ampule. Why is he not wearing protective gear? (No gloves / face gear). Because as an android he is programmed to 'believe' his components cannot be contaminated. What if the green 'goo' is way beyond Weyland's current level of understanding and an 'accident' happens with David? I can very well see this as the start of a bio-mech monstrosity. ...just a thought...

ReplyXenophobePrometheus ForumXenomorph-Space Jockey, connections. . .Feb 4, 2012
@JC - Yeah I was thinking along similar lines, as mentioned, the Xenomorph is basically a perfect creature. Aside from it's intelligence perhaps, even though Queens are shown to be alot more intelligent then lower caste Xeno's. But yeah, the Xeno's do seem a bit TOO perfect to have evolved naturally me thinks. . . A defense mechanism would be interesting! Also, I think the SJ's are either extinct after the events of Prometheus, or that "time dilation" I've heard about means they now exist in the distant future. As they've not come and destroyed Earth anytime soon in the Alien movies. . .
ReplycentrospherePrometheus ForumXenomorph-Space Jockey, connections. . .Feb 4, 2012
On the other hand I ever preferred to see the Alien as an advanced parasite naturally evolved. Like the rats or cockroaches of very advanced civilizations. The concept of the Alien as an weapon is fancifull, but not very clever. As I have already noted here at the forum, even our miserable civilization is quickly advancing past the stage where something like the Alien would not be a huge problem for us. Think only about a fleet of flying minidrones, weaponized, and capable of doing a thoroughly inspection of any kind of structure (like a spaceship). Poor Aliens.
ReplyJCPrometheus ForumXenomorph-Space Jockey, connections. . .Feb 4, 2012
The Aliens are a perfect fit for weapons, terraforming, or defense. The Jocks decide to terraform a planet, but it's already inhabited. They simply drop a few morphs on the planet, wait a few months, then go in an clean up after they are done. No need to get into a protracted war just to take over the planet, and the morphs die off when their breeding stock is gone. An analogy would be if we could bio-engineer a few Velociraptors (um, more likely Utahraptors), tweak their personalities to make them a bit more hostile, then release them in Afghanistan.
I don't quite agree that our miserable civilization could handle an infestation of Acheronus Terribilus. We thought with our superior technology we would go in an kick some communist arse in Vietnam, and we got our butts handed to us by an inferior force that relied more on stealth than the latest and greatest in weaponry. Same thing happened in Iraq, where we thought the war would be quickly won by modern warfare. Both us and the Soviets have learned that the dirt-farmers in Afghanistan are more formidable than their simple lives would suggest. A quickly multiplying parasite like the Alien may not bring civilization to an end, but it would cause a lot of chaos and panic.
ReplyXenophobePrometheus ForumXenomorph-Space Jockey, connections. . .Feb 4, 2012
But how exactly could the SJ's "clean up" the Xeno's once they've reproduced god knows how many times?? As we've seen, more advanced races then them can't handle em i.e Predators. I doubt their feeding stocks would die out in months, given the amount of life a whole planet would have. I think that the SJ's wouldn't be able to handle a creature such as that, even with their higher intelligence. As evidenced by the Derelict ship being "derelict" with a dead SJ in a chair.
ReplyArchEtechPrometheus ForumXenomorph-Space Jockey, connections. . .Feb 4, 2012
1) Its been sort of confirmed that there is a weapon associated with the use of the Xeno life form. What we dont know is if it's what created them or wage creature we've seen already. In my opinion they aren't smart enough to be a perfect weapon but then again smart bombs aren't really that smart either. Modern earth would easily defeat Xeno as we know it. There is probably something worse we haven't seen.
2) The creature in Alien is considerably smarter than what is demonstrated in all later movies. The actually seem to get progressively dumber as do the movies themselves.
3) We could have easily won The Vietnam war, and we did win the Iraq war. Politics and sensitivity to collateral damage complicates things.... I dont see the world playing captain sensitive through a Xeno invasion, nor politics being used to save infected humans.
