Im Durp I would not compare the Mummy with Alien Covenant. And I would not go to see a movie that leaves me with nothing. You hear that, nothing. Going to every movie and sitting there until it's over only to build up your hate for a review, that I cannot understand.
How many times will you see the Mummy?
Did you write a negative review for AC?
Well, I am one of them but I don't know anybody else you commented on the movie. I truly despise it because I like Prometheus and the directions it was taken. I recognize that writing here is note completely healthy.
Judging the distribution of the Imdb grades as a Gaussian sample distribution (which it is for 150k+ reviewers) the number of 1s (2.9%) should be somewhere below 1.7% the number of 2s. The difference of 1% to 1.5% (1500-200) more 1s for me is not very conclusive. This phenomenon appears also with Prometheus with 1.4% 2s and 2.2% 1s, the difference between real and expected is say 1% or 5000 reviews. Saying this, against Prometehus could be argued that there was a bigger hate campaign.
If you want a true hate campaign, look at death note, there 21.6 % of the 41k ratings are 1s, as opposed to the 8% of 2s.
Ps. Everyone was the right to enjoy whatever movie they want as long as the movies obeys the laws (so no Nazi propaganda or child pedophilia ).
Im Durp You are right. Most of the times the truth prevails. Consider all the hate movies like "Get out" get (from people who happen to be racist) or "It" (from people who wanted to boycott Stephen King). And yet those movies maintain a high score because they are good. There is a reason why Alien Covenant received a lukewarm response from the fanbase and a good share of hate from people who honestly disliked the movie.
daliens the 2.9 One star votes ratio from Alien Covenant is not much higher than the 2.3 from The Force Awakens. And yet that film's score is 8.1, while Alien Covenant's is 6.5. Therefore, the 1 stars are not the the only problem. Mother! has a whopping 17.1 One star ratio and yet the average sits at 6.8. That means Alien Covenant did not get enough love from the fanbase to make up for the low ratings. The part of the audience that is really passionate about the David storyline is maybe 5%.
I don't get this type of movie goer who pays for the ticket, then regrets the waste of money, who waits until the end then regrets the waste of time
Do you leave a movie the second it does something you don't like? If so I'll clarify that MOST moviegoers will watch a movie they paid for all the way through if only hoping it will get better as it goes on, or think it's a waste to walk out completely. If the reviews had said it was so bad they walked out, then you would just criticize them for not giving the whole movie a chance.
If people don't like a movie they say it. It's not so secret conspiracy that everyone is against A:C and secretly got together before the movie came out and just said, "hate on it and don't like it just because." That doesn't happen, in fact that's never happened. If a movie is good typically the reviews say so. You don't always have to agree with the public opinion of a movie, but you still have to acknowledge what it is.
I had a fun enough time watching the new Mummy movie. It's getting terrible reviews, across the board, is it just popular to hate on the new Mummy? No, people just didn't like it. Same goes for A:C(except its average scores are much higher indicating more people liked it)
Can you explain how come a movie with a 6.5 rating on Imdb has so many 1 star rating negative reviews? For me it looks like a trolling campaign, I can't believe those movie goers found nothing worthy of a film and still waste their precious time to write down their negative feelings. I believe, forgive me if I'm wrong, you are one of them, so maybe you can clarify what drives you into this. Are you an Alien fan who cares about the future of the franchise?
Kethol I did not mean the average rating but the pages and pages of negative reviews and suggestions / recommendations to avoid the film.
Even on the film page from Imdb the review is titled "2 hours of my life I'm never getting back" written by someone with a very meaningful life but who waited until the end of the movie or at least saw 2 hours of it and got bored to death.
I don't get this type of movie goer who pays for the ticket, then regrets the waste of money, who waits until the end then regrets the waste of time only to waste more time to write a negative review. Like he was not allowed to leave the theater if the movie was not what he expected it to be?
There are so many reviews of these type. Is it a trend, does it happen with other movies too, is it fashionable to be a badass reviewer?
red0guy@gmail.com oh alright. Anyway, Japan cannot save Alien Covenant. It's already like

I hope the ending is somewhat remaining mysterious but also flow well into the 1979 Alien film. I personally against a direct explanation of Space Jockey because it may take away the imagination. What is great about the first half of Alien is exactly its unresolved atmosphere, so some little clues mentioned in Awakening would be nice, but not with a complete explanation.
On the other hand I always feel the character Ash can be a great way to connect both final prequel and the original. And a little cameo of Jonesy doesn't hurt :p
The wide release is only on the 3rd of November. what you said there is only it's run during The Down Town Taito International Comedy Film Festival
Hi Sherris,
I bought the £19.99p 4K Ultra HD version and it does not include Advent and on the HMV website the steel book has the same menu as my copy. In addition it does not include the Crossing.
To go for the luxury high end output and not include either may or may not be a comment on David as the unreliable narrator. If you were not a member of this site or one of the other fan sites but simply went to the movie (the majority) it would suggest for that majority neither of those elements are part of the story or considered an important contribution IF Fox make the next film.
For me when David narrates in the film to Walter in the garden you can just feel the cut that Pietro referred to earlier this year. However when you then move to the sub pornographic fantasy drawings and the reveal of her cadaver thats the point where the movie indeed the entire series moves from engagement to a clinical study of a robot who will do anything say anything and none of it mean anything so the absence of both the Crossing and Advent is an interesting comment on the story values and character narrative that is holding the entire story together now.
Why do you ignore the amazon video score which is only 2.7 based on 554 user reviews which are different that the 630 blu-ray/dvd reviews. If AC would be threated as any other movie with both kinds of reviews merged the score would be less, somewhere around 3.4 or 3.5. I don't know why Amazon does this, but it does check it out.
^There's currently no indication that It will do well in Japan. The bigger threat will be Japan's domestic slate.
I also wrote this in the other Japan box office thread. It doesn't look like the typhoon affected things too much at the box office, especially since most of the prominent theaters are closer to Fukuoka, but I'm sure some numbers were lost:
The thing is the odds were stacked against it since Japan isn't a very bankable market for Hollywood anymore. They were popular in the country back in the 1990s, but now Japan's film industry is much stronger, with triple the number of screens from the 1990s. As a result, most (not all, but most) Hollywood films are just less attractive to them.
Even Marvel/DC films don't do very well. Wonder Woman will be lucky if it earns more than $12 million by the end of its run.
It's also important to remember that Japan's preferred measurement for box office ranking is theater attendance. This is because movie tickets are often sold depending on the genre, what country it's from, what studio made it, what gender is buying the ticket and what sort of discount day it is. (There are many.)
Alien: Covenant opened on a Holiday weekend and was practically the only major release, but it looks like it's only #1 via more expensive tickets. Attendance-wise it looks like it may have opened as low as #3. I don't know yet, I'm still waiting for more official numbers from Kogyotsushin to be translated.
Attendance is important because it gives us an indicator of how well it will do in the coming weeks. Strong legs is more important to the Japanese box office than opening weekends, but comparing Saturday's number to Sunday's might give an indication of its future.
If it made $2.6M then it likely opened to an estimated audience of 195,000 for the weekend. For comparison that number is a slightly better opening than Wonder Woman (182,092), Ghost in a Shell (171,203), Guardians of the Galaxy 2 (163,143) and Logan (113,600).
More when I have it.
Yeah sure, with "It" arriving on the 17th in Japan I anticipate Covenant has really good legs.

Call answers with frank and urgent confidence, "You're a thing. A construct. They grew you in a fucking lab." Ripley starts staring at Call without blinking much. She's confused. It's like her purpose to live was just ripped out of her that there was no time to fight it.

that would be an amazing book, Id buy it without question! Thanks for the share Ati!
bring back what this franchise is all about. And I don't mean bug hunt, I mean visceral, gripping survival stories that are smart and suspenseful.
definitely have to agree there! The Dead Space franchise was inspired by what made Alien so great, now perhaps the Alien franchise should return the favour and take notes from makes Dead Space so great lol. Epic grand scale visuals, suspense, intelligent and logical decision-making, constant threat to survival, visceral and gripping
You are welcome, Roger55, it would be a nice Christmas present from them.
joylitt - See what you did? Chris has just read your impossible comment above and can't stop laughing. Not well played, joylitt
Ati thank you for sharing, I love all AC extra-merchandising.
Ripley- I'm not her. What am I?
Ati See what you did? You prompted Chris to clarify in a news thread what those numbers mean. Well played, Ati
"It's no surprise that Covenant struggled at the box office, both domestically and internationally"
Exactly, no surprise. Because it doesn't even feel like an Alien movie. I am going to say it again: just make a spinoff with David and company for that minority who enjoys that storyline and bring back what this franchise is all about. And I don't mean bug hunt, I mean visceral, gripping survival stories that are smart and suspenseful.
Covenant may not have done too well domestically but internationally it did pretty well or am I missing something? Either way, glad Blu-ray sales are strong and that it wasn't a total flop at the box office. I hope FOX doesn't cave in to the naysayers and moves forward with Ridley's plans because he has a great thing on his hands and he obviously isn't finished. Love the mythology building and sophisticated storytelling.
I saw him post that :D Very intrigued myself and would buy in a heartbeat!
IRaptus - Supreme Leader Snoke's private gigamega destroyer with its 60km has arrived. LOL!

G. H. (Gman) - Thank you for the info.
Yes, but it's also a very prominent holiday weekend in Japan. Box office numbers are often up during what they call Silver Week--So it evens out.

Oram- "What do you believe in David?"
David- contemplates for a moment "... Creation."
Love this scene!
I thought so too, Ridley definitely has an eye for detail. The way Oram convulsed with his tongue piercing out was uncomfortable to watch lol
The Deacon mural over the Proto head is epic!
The steam is a really nice touch, hot body - cold tomblike room.
so is Oram's fingers twitching and curling up into a spider-like rigor mortis.
Xenotaris agreed, it is a truly epic design. As timeless and iconic as any other memorable sci-fi ship design
Ati Its a cool looking ship, though huge compared to the other ships in the franchise at x10 the size of a Conestoga and Juggernaut!
Makes you wonder What the hell else did they have on that thing beside the whole Alien experiments.
I love how the Sulaco was designed to look like a gun in space whilst the Auriga's design was based around a combat knife, though with that tapered bow it looks more like a hammerhead shark imo, somewhat predatory for a research ship XD

@red0guy@gmail.com -"On RT the user score is 57"
RT is the last place I would look for an accurate public opinion. That place has morphed into a hate fest. I think IMDB gives a much better picture, and they rated it 6.5 / 10 (65%), from twice as many voters as RT. Amazon here shows 3.7/5 stars (74%) from verified buyers. Google users show 77% liked. Metacritic's users score is 60%.
Point being, more of the public liked it than disliked it. Average all those and it is around 67% positive. With reviewers it is even higher.
"But in all honesty I don't know if it will sale as many units as Prom"
Prom came out in 2012. A lot has changed since then so probably no way AC will sell as many units. Home Video sales have declined every year because VOD/streaming services are taking over. No one knows what those numbers are because the studios don't make them public, but expect AC is doing fine in that arena.
Prometheus was David's origin story and the reason why he sees mankind as inferior. He was 'gray' because he was still under Peter Weyland's thumb but now that he perished David is free to do as he pleases though it's far too late as he has become jaded and infected by his creator's God-complex. In Prometheus he was merely biding his time and over the course of the film you saw David's true uncaring/indifferent nature come to the forefront. "Doesn't everyone want their parents dead?"
His character and progression are parallel to Sir Lawrence in Lawrence of Arabia.
I always had a soft spot for the Conestoga-class Dreadnaught
