Alien series showrunner Noah Hawley recently sat down to chat about all things Alien with Deadline Hollywood on their podcast and during their conversation Hawley touches on some of the big ideas he's tackled for the series and confirms Hulu wants the first and second season to release in close proximity to each other. Read on for some highlights from the conversation!
What I said to Ridley is ‘I’m adapting your movie.’ I had to make a decision — retro futurism or Prometheus? And I chose retro-futurism. When I close my eyes and you say Alien to me, I see that green Ascii text. You know, I hear that sound. I see that keyboard with the weird Egyptian runes on it. I see those hallways.
Deadline confirms the series takes place a few years before the events of Prometheus, which explains why the series won't reference the Alien prequel or share its visual aesthetic.
Hawley also touched on the expanse of the Alien lore, noting that in every instance of Alien interactions, the settings have always been a "trapped" environment. Noah plans to open things up:
The alien stories are always trapped… Trapped in a prison, trapped in a space ship. I thought it would be interesting to open it up a little bit so that the stakes of ‘What happens if you can’t contain it?’ are more immediate.

The Alien series has not yet been given an official release date, but Hulu is aiming to launch the first season in 2025. The series will also be separate to Fede Alvarez's Alien: Romulus movie which hits theaters this August!
