I catch your drift
It isn't all about gore.Look at some of the movies on that list.
Think of Alien and Brett and Lambert's death. There is only a small bit of gore in both of the killings, but they are still both horrific for different reasons, Lambert's more so to me because it is hinted at what is happening.

MemberOvomorph02/23/2012I think when the Directors Cut of Alien was released in cinemas in the UK it was only a 12 and when it was released on DVD an 18 again. I think sometimes the BBFC will vary their ratings dependent on how much money can be made, "do I hear a bribe sir, surely not...."

I was wrong it was a 15, but my copy on DVD is definately an 18.......

wheresbasky?
MemberOvomorph02/23/2012Well,if we knew what the criteria was to warrant an 18 cert, and more about prometheus,we could make an educated guess about the rating!!?
Found these guidelines on the BBFC website
*where the material is in breach of the criminal law, or has been created through the commission of a criminal offence
*where material or treatment appears to the BBFC to risk harm to individuals or, through their behaviour, to society – for example, any detailed portrayal of violent or dangerous acts, or of illegal drug use, which may cause harm to public health or morals. This may include portrayals of sexual or sexualised violence which might, for example, eroticise or endorse sexual assault
*where there are more explicit images of sexual activity which cannot be justified by context. Such images may be appropriate in ‘R18’ works, and in ‘sex works’ (see below) would normally be confined to that category.
So if Prometheus falls into these guide lines!!! 18 it is......My money is on a 15
and NO !!! I don't want it to be full of gorenography or sex!!!
I know this will be a fantastic movie whatever the rating

The PG rating in Ontario I think is wrong. I thought it was "AA" [14 or above without an adult]. If it truly got a PG rating, getting a rating of a true "R" for nearly anything would be impossible.
This entire PG-13 ruining Prometheus is kinda crap. If Alien can pass a PG-13 in most parts of the world, Prometheus can be on the same gore/idea level and still get a PG-13. Plus, the average episode of supernatural is gorier then Alien was.

MemberOvomorphFeb-23-2012 1:44 PM.I'm starting to relax about the idea of Prometheus being a pg13/12. Although I think an 18/R would probably be better for the hardcore/old school fans.

MemberOvomorphFeb-23-2012 6:28 PMI'm coming round to the same conclusion engineer prototype, and i'm convinced that ridley has the integrity to make a serious gritty drama from this and will not compromise his vision into popcorn fodder its just not his style so whatever the rating i think it will be a fine film regardless.

MemberOvomorphFeb-23-2012 8:27 PMI too am not very concerned with a PG-13 rating....what made 'Alien' great wasn't so much the gore and violence but the surreal and tense atmosphere Scott provides and by leaving holes in the story to allow the audience's imagination to run wild..(i.e. derelict ship/space jockey origin)

MemberXenomorphFeb-23-2012 8:35 PMNot to mention he left more to the imagination by not showing certain things....that your imagination filled the gaps with.....and that is much scarier than actually seeing the "act." That I think is key to being scary these days.

Shane
MemberOvomorphFeb-23-2012 11:04 PMThat is something I have argued a lot elsewhere. Most things imagined are far far worse then what is seen in film. Showing too much risks falling into the trap that a lot of modern "horror" falls into....worthless gorefests with few redeeming points[see the entire torture gore subgenre of horror that has become so popular]. It's not the key these days, it has always been the key to great horror in my mind with a few exceptions.
I think the "R" rating would more appeal to the "AvP" crowd. Personally I hate that shit. AvP:R is still the worst film I have ever seen, and man, if you saw my movie collection 10 years ago, I have endured a lot of shitty films.

MemberFacehuggerFeb-24-2012 1:58 PMCould you imagine if it turns out to be PG-13, but is so horrific and nightmarish that the kiddies going to see it become so frightened and scarred by it that their parents start complaining to the studio?
Headline... "Millions of teenagers found sleeping in their parents' bedrooms." :-)

MemberOvomorphFeb-24-2012 2:04 PMI would love that...Fox's reasoning on this issue is absolutely rediculous and makes ZERO sense...Once again, consider the TARGET AUDIENCE for movies like this according to FOX themselves...12-19 year old Teen Angst Filled Adolescent Males. Now let's say I am one of them...am I going to be more attraced to a film that is 14 or even 18 and over or one that is PG-13? I mean FOX has to be so asleep at the switch to think that making something PG-13 guarentees income that its' a Blue Ball Wonder that Rupurt Murdock or whoever it is that owns FOX hasn't been over thrown or had his business taken over or even bloddy realized this by themselves yet after all of these years. I mean they have got to be the single worst Media related company on Earth!!!

MemberFacehuggerFeb-24-2012 2:32 PMJust look at the restrictions of PG-13 vs. R and I think you'll have your answer on Fox's reasoning.
R - under 17 restricted unless accompanied by a parent
PG-13 - anyone 13+ does not need a parent to enter
How many kids over 12 want to be seen hanging out with their uncool parents? :-) So, more butts in the seats.
I just hope Fox doesn't do what it did with Kingdom of Heaven and make Scott cut out parts of the film to shorten it and get more screenings per day in a hope to make more money. Give me Scott's "director's cut" of 'Prometheus' out of the gate, regardless of running time or rating consideration.

MemberOvomorphFeb-24-2012 2:33 PMthat's my fear as well, you make it pG-13 it gets cut to all hell.

MemberOvomorphFeb-24-2012 2:34 PMYep i got to say their news coverage leaves a lot to be desired they seem to pay the stupidest people out there to present their organisation's media.

MemberFacehuggerFeb-24-2012 2:47 PMNo news coverage is good. All outlets are slanted. True journalism is dead.
I had to share this... every time I see the title of this thread, I think of The Lord Marshals lines in 'Chronicles of Riddick' which are featured in Destroid's song, As the World Turns.

MemberOvomorphFeb-24-2012 6:37 PMI don't think PG-13 means "cut to hell" unique and a lot more implied violence yes. Which could be a good thing. the length cutting thing honestly concerns me more then the rating. I think people put too much power in a simple rating. Lots of films from the 70's I still consider creepy as hell would be rated like "PG" now.
And in Canada, R mean NO ONE UNDER 18 gets in. Parent or not. So a lot of stuff gets pressured in an AA rating here. AvP:R was rated "R". That did NOTHING to improve it as a movie and honestly, a lot of the "R" rated scenes should have been left on the floor.
Honestly, I get the rating fear. Teenagers are the market for movies now. Hell even when I waes a kid they were the market. I used to go see a ton of movies when I was a kid. I turned 19 and pretty much stopped going to movies as more interesting things opened up [and I always seem to be working will at last 9pm so getting to a movie where I live is impossible].

CrazyDave55811
MemberOvomorphFeb-26-2012 8:26 PMI'm hoping Prometheus gets rated R. If it's PG-13, then we can expect a lot of things to be cut out.....but of course Twentieth Century Fox will make a pleasant profit off of this movie since a non-R-rating will attract a bigger audience. And I know they can release an R-rated cut to video....
....but, what's the point? Prometheus seems like such a movie that an R-rating fits perfectly.
