MemberOvomorphMar-13-2012 9:05 PMAs much as I WANT to believe 3D adds to the movie, I don't. Avatar had nice special effects but the story was junk. Here we are about to see a great movie and to me its a difficult decision. Do I go see the film in 3D like Ridley Scott suggests, or do I go see it in 2D, which is what I feel would be the pure experience.
Some of you might go see it two times... What will you choose for opening night?

I will spend the extra couple bux and see it in imax 3d as that is what the closest theatre to me is showing (1.3 miles :) ). I have only seen a few 3d titles ( Alice / Avatar / Tron) while these might have been the best examples of the this "new" tech, I came away unimpressed. I will however see this in 3d as to give more $ to Ridley and the stealio in hopes of getting a new one greenlit.

MemberOvomorphMar-13-2012 9:37 PMMy first show will be 3D. The remaining shows will be fine in 2D, I think, but it depends on how good the 3D is. I'll definitely see it BOTH ways.
(I'm someone who's taking 6/8 off from work so that I can see the 6/7 midnight show and then as many shows as I can on 6/8... and maybe 6/9 and 6/10.)

MemberOvomorphMar-13-2012 10:49 PMOpening night? 2-D only for me. I plan on seeing it at the Arclight Cinerama Dome in Hollywood, but if it's 3-D then i'll have to see it in another theater. If I do enjoy the movie and I hear good things about the 3-D then I will see it again. I have heard even if it is filmed with 3-D cameras dark scenes don't come across that well.

MemberOvomorphMar-13-2012 11:10 PM3D is very much still a gamble IMHO. There have been numerous stories of theaters not adjusting the lenses properly and the movies being so dark as a result that they are barely watchable. I am curious to see how the new 3D cameras look, though, especially given the upcoming Hobbit movie which uses similar technology during filming.
I'm probably going to just roll the dice and try to catch it in 3D when it opens. Then in a few weeks I'll download the 2D version.

MemberOvomorphMar-14-2012 12:09 AMproblem with 3D is that the illumination of the screen takes such a hit - some crazy percentage, like 25% I think. I guess it's worth checking out on the first showing - but after that..nah. I forget I'm watching 3d half-way into the movie most times anyway

MemberOvomorphMar-14-2012 12:21 AMJim, your last sentence sums up my experience perfectly. It takes something great to get me to the theater (Tron 3D, Up 3D, Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Rolling Stones Live in Texas 78) but the past few times after my eyes get adjusted I forget I'm seeing '3D'. I guess if you are truly immersed in something, then you should forget you are watching. That is certainly the feeling I got watching Alien for the first time. I felt like I was on that ship. Forgot to breathe for 2 hours!
I guess it boils down to the TYPE of movie as well. Fantasy stuff like Tron, Up, so forth, you can have fun with the visuals. Prometheus, to me, doesn't need a visual gimmick. If Ridley comes out and says "you'll miss something seeing it in 2D" then I'll go see it in 3D. I also don't want to mess with the glasses for the first 10 minutes of the movie...

MemberOvomorphMar-14-2012 12:58 PM3D first go round - opening night :)
2D after that, with a few return 3D viewings.
I'm sure I'll be impressed enough by it ;-)
