Come Visit So We Can Destroy You?

I find that it doesn't make much sense for a race, whoever they are, the Engineers/Space Jockeys to come to earth and leave all the evidence for various civilizations on earth to find, including the Egyptians, who by the way were very smart themselves, just so a few years later in the scheme of things to destroy us at some point in time. If they have the technology to be there in the past, then I'm sure they pretty much have the technology to wipe us out then if they want. The race visited our planet more than once by the evidence of what Shaw found, at different periods of time, otherwise how would the Egyptians know about it. I really think we are missing something entirely, something we don't know about yet. The Engineers/Space Jockeys have the ability to come to earth at anytime apparently, they did it in the past, more than once. So there has to be something new. I think the race is all but dead and the crew stumbles upon an old experiment gone wrong, and perhaps the old Engineers/SJ's had some type of safe guards that would remain in place in the event some outside source stumbled in. Or perhaps, by getting infected, the crew has a new mindset of infecting others, including earth. What does everyone think?

SJs probably not dead ENTIRELY yet, just very few left. I don't think they Wanted us to go to that planet at all, it was a warning, just like Ripley said in Alien and Aliens, about the transmission. Also, another reason the SJs aren't dead is baecause the one in the chair probably was the only one left after hishersit's friends were killed by the xeno that escaped.

There was 1 storyline that they were welcomed by the sj and it was only for a member of the crew stealing something that relations were destroyed so maybe this is why. Also i haven't studied the trailers in great detail but maybe at the clip when they are talking about all the different past human civilisations showing the same symbol, maybe the reason for their decline was the sj! If it isn't the case it does sound strange though that a race would go to all that trouble terraforming a planet then creating a race in their own likeness to then going and wiping them out.

I was thinking along the same line with experiment gone wrong. Maybe survivors land on earth help growing civilizations map is really a warning. I think its Shaw in the trailer saying "we were wrong" probably about the map being an invitation.

i think just one of them came to earth,or crashed or was sent away with the capability to create life, which he did..( being the human race) in his own image or at least the ability to pro-create or the like. after coming into contact with the tribes of earth he is treated like a god and reigns as a king (as per the trailer) then dies. he knows the space jockey race wouldnt tollerate his creations,as they might see human kind as a threat so he tells them to stay the fuck away from a certain star system (home of the space jockey/bio-engineers and shows them where abouts the system is via drawings on caves and temples etc. thousands of years later and with the ability of space travel, some bright sparks correlate the drawings and mistake it as an invitation to come find out ( this is where you hear miss Rapace saying ` we were so wrong`) as its not an invitation but indeed a warning. when the humans arrive on the planet they create havoc with the engineers experiments and release the strain of tiny aliens ( you can see one in that blokes eye in the trailer if your quick enough or pause at the right moment) the last remaining jockey makes a bid to get to earth to wipe out these human upstarts who have stolen their secrets but has already been infected with an alien and after his ship crashes he dies in the chair. i think ive actually sussed out the whole plot from all the threads ive read/seen and seived through all the mis-directors and came up with the real storyline. but lets wait and see.....

It seems to be using the same theme as the original Alien, a warning misconstrued as a plea for help or invitation. My guess is that the reason it is called Prometheus is because on of those giant alien guys went to Earth and brought technology (fire) and the warning that his race was a menace. The picture in the cave is him pointing at where the enemy lives. I have no doubt that David will be just as dangerous as any of the other androids in the series, probably implanting more of the aliens than removing them. I wish they didn't show the ship ramming the alien one to stop it, that gives away too much of the story in my opinion.

A good point they thought it was an invitation to discover the truth of our origins and instead its a warning to stay away from a means that could mean our end... Thing is, this makes me think the warning was from a good species (engineers), that gave us a helping hand, to stay away from the bad guys (Space Jockey's)... Furthermore, that makes me think this is a prison built by the Engineers to keep the Space Jockey's locked up, and we (as usual) fumble in and screw things up.

It is illogical for the map to be either a warning or a trap. Why create an elaborate trap for a race you could have exterminated at any point? Why leave a warning not to go to a planet that would, in the vastness of space, be a longshot to find and could easily be misinterpreted. Although, now that I think about it, why create a race and put them in a garden and leave but a simple commandment not to eat the fruit of one tree that you leave conspicuously in the middle? Gods aren't entirely logical in their execution. It could be part of elaborate life cycle for the SJ's. They engineer a race that 1000s of years later will follow their invitation to then become somehow merged with the SJ race and create a form of immortality for the SJ race, but that seems a bit far fetched. I think the pictogram is, in fact, an invitation. But the inviters are all dead, and human meddling causes them to open Pandora's Jar and all hell breaks loose.

Why would they warn cavedwellers not to go to a very very distant planet? It's like a parent telling this one month old baby not to list his volunteer work in his resume. We *know* that the journey to this place is very long, the crew are in cryo sleep for 5 years. You can call me out on that one, but I expect better from Scott than to reuse the invitation/warning thing that's been done a lot until now. Granted, it was kinda new in Alien, but it gets old even in Event Horizon. We all seen those movies, he must have saw them too (heck he saw the girl with the dragon tattoo).

How about... An unknown species (the ones with the disc shaped UFO - Engineers maybe) give us a helping hand in some way, but also give us a warning to stay away from a certain star system... ...Thousands of years later Shaw & Holloway uncover the message but misread it as an invitation. Upon arrival in said star system they unlock an ancient prison built to keep the Space Jockey race locked up, reawakening and unleashing the pent up fury of Space Jockey's whom view us as their prison guards because we were created in the Engineer's image.

A prison to hold the Titans, it makes sense. Good call.

So if the Space Jockey's are the Titans locked up in their prison, then who the hell are the gods in the saucer shaped UFO?!?

You are wrong. You are so wrong. It's not a warning. A warning would have a circle and a slash. This is the universal symbol for "don't do this". No circle and no slash= invitation

Now a pictogram showing a man going to a star system and getting shot with arrows.; that's a warning.

This idea reminds me of the film 'Species', where an alien civilization sends mankind DNA to create the perfect deadly organism.

I think its not so much come visit us so we can destroy you but who they visit. Because: "Scott theorized that it might have been the ship's pilot (in the original alien), and that the ship might have been a weapons carrier capable of dropping Alien eggs onto a planet so that the Aliens could use the local lifeforms as hosts" The ships crew encounter weapons carrier/laboratory rather than 'creators' ship but that imposes more questions.

they are waiting inside the ampoules and they need host organisms..in this case its humans...it does make sense..friendly invitation like a trojan horse do you think they would announce their plans to kill us in their invite..would we visit them then

Of course they would not invite us just to destroy us - or would they? 2 things. Remember the crew finds a civilization much different than what they expected. Mostly I've read that they are brutally savage. And also, Shaw is saying she is "so sorry" and "we were so wrong". Like Prometheus stole fire from Zeus, very likely her "sorry" refers to the theft of the Aliens sourse code or the like. I wonder what is in that case Shaw is carrying as she hurridly exits the rear dock of that ship. Oh by the way, I want trailers in 3D. I'll buy my own glasses.

it does seem like a lot of the jockeys are dead already, like in the pic thats been floating around of a pile of dead ones slumped up against the wall. that or they had to throw their suits off in a big ol' hurry.

Maybe it is a trap. Space travel proves we have resources that are worth plundering to them. Or that we have come to far technologically and they fear we may bump them off the top of the food chain in the galaxy so they engineered these to lead us to them when we are in the early days of FTL travel. And before we would become a true threat to their dominance.
