Do we really need another annoying 'Archaeology' guy

the coming
MemberOvomorphMarch 26, 20121145 Views28 Repliesthis is a bit of a rant, but I have taken an instant dislike to Archaeology boy from the trailer...to me he looks very much like the guy from AVP...the mediterranean looking expert on inca symbols etc.....I just hope he doesnt utter a cliche line like 'in my village they call it the chupacabra'
Second thing I don't like is the way he is doing the minority report thing, and his motions are just completely over the top and annoying, more so than Tom Cruise..I just find this guy is going to be an irritation akin to a child actor...
the silly scarf just tops it off he reminds me of one of those snobby Londoners who think they are graphic designers because they bought an Apple MAC

The archealogy comparison to AVP bothered me as well.....I'm trying to reserve judgement until after I see the film.....trying VERY hard....
March 26, 2012
The archaeology thing seems to be Lindelof style.
I just hope the Prometheus big human face and the four toed huge stone leg from the "Lost" are not connected.
The proportions seems to be suspiciously similar :-)
March 26, 2012
thankfully I haven't seen any of the AVP's..but, he hasn't annoyed me yet, as he seems a somewhat decent actor. lol on the display gizmo lifted straight out of Minority Report. Is this tech supposed to be the right around the bend, cause I don't see it happening quite yet!
at least there wasn't classical music playing in the background as he was "conducting"

Yeah I felt the same way when I saw the trailer. But when I watched the UK trailer it made me feel better about it, seemed more realistic. Hopefully they will go more in depth with explaining things instead of the super revealing one-liners. They probably spent so much time figuring out how to make you feel like you know what is going to happen from watching the trailers to help market it to the masses, so that everyone will be completely unprepared when they go into the theatre.

I don't like sexy people in movies..there are too many calvin klein models in this movie..There wasn't anyone attractive in 'Alien' except for maybe Ripley a little bit, but that's what made it realistic....sexy people=marketing for teens=bad movie
March 26, 2012
maybe the idea of having these "sexy" characters is to throw us off and surprise us. the beautiful characters will eventually turn to something else or die horribly. remember, it's suppose to be a NASTY movie.
March 26, 2012
I find these actors "sexy" in a different way. Yes, almost everyone of them is pretty, they have interesting faces IMO, but their beauty isn't that typical or doll-look like lots of actors/models in these days. For example, Megan Fox and so on. If saw her in such movie I'd start laughing my ass off. And I agree with @royal-jelly, this movie will have to shock us in some way. So none of the actors annoy me.
March 26, 2012
@the coming
You are exactly right, my friend. Actually, none of the first three movies had GQ types in them. And now, we have the most beautiful people on the universe going to find the mysteries of our beginning in a (possible) PG-13 movie.
No, I think they are cast simply because they are sexy. They may be good actors too but they just have to be sexy. It is just the time we live in. The 60s and 70s rebelled against that type of casting but it returned in the 80s (thankfully, Cameron still cast believable faces in Aliens); that is that. Rapace is Weaver-like in having an original look, but where are the Skerritts and Kottos and Paxtons and Durnings?
Where the hell is my Harry Dean Stanton!!!???
March 26, 2012
@dallas!dallas! PG-13? I don't think so. To the whole sexy people comment... again I don't think so. Take another look.
March 26, 2012
@dallas I'm glad we agree...we are 80s men (I think)...this new age 'formulaic' marketing approach to everything just stinks. It insults my intelligence, and the transformers mainstream lap it up...I will definitely see this movie but it is treading on very thin ice with me...
The sexy people from GQ I can accept, Fassbender has an arthouse quality, but if it is a PG, then Ridley better have that unrated version on the ready or I will turn Mark David Chapman on his ass...
March 26, 2012
Yes...yes we do. I like the greasy haired, snobby Euro-trash crew-member angle. They generally serve as the "red shirt" cast members of any franchise.
March 26, 2012
Archaeologists and good looking people? Are you seriously nitpicking this stuff?
Relax a little. Look at the entire cast. Enjoy the film.
I don't see the issue at all, but if you want to get crazy about analyzing it, recall that the life expectancy is 95. With advances in health technology, people are going to be better looking, and for a longer span of time.
March 26, 2012
Microsis, I hope you are right. I truly do.
the coming, yes, an 80s man and again we agree. I think the actors cast do have that arthouse quality (I think you put into words what I was trying to say about Rapace).
Ahhh Mark David Chapman, I hope Prometheus is not Scott's Double Fantasy.
I wonder if Lennon would have liked Alien? I saw an old interview where he stated his love for EC comics/Tales from the Crypt. A fact that gave him much higher stature in my eyes.
March 26, 2012
I thought Lennon was shot in 1980, so he might have seen it no? need to check the dates..although I'm sure he was too busy to goto the movies, probably lived a completely different life
@famished..yes these things bother me...The last person I need going Michael Bay on my ass is Ridley Scott...but like I said in another thread it is definitely a brave and original film, I just hope he goes all out, but I can sense the suits are killing his raw creativity with their marketing formulas
March 26, 2012
Michael Bay? I don't think what you have here is even close to that extreme example.
Every indication from every interview Scott has done, would imply that he chose who to cast, and was very selective about it. This wasn't some casting by a committee of producers. It's Scott wishing to achieve exactly what he hoped to. Nothing more, nothing less, and if both Theron and Fassbender turn out to be synthetic, the argument falls completely flat. Rapace, maybe, but she's definitely not mainstream sex appeal.
Again, if you look at the cast, pretty typical to films over many decades.
Michael Biehn? Harrison Ford? Daryl Hannah, Sean Young? etc.
You are welcome to your opinion, but it sounds like comic shop cynicism to me.
March 26, 2012
ok it's just scarf boy then...he has that Justin Long quality that is irritating me before I've even seen the movie..as I said before too close to the AVP guy...please take off that bloody scarf this is the Alien universe not some Jean Paul Gaultier parade
yes I am cynical but only because it is important to criticise art for it to be good...Otherwise you are one of those mothers on X-Factor who think their fat ginger overweight kids can become superstars..
I don't appreciate blind positivity, you don't appreciate cynicism...we have balance in the force

Ha! This cracked me up, and yeah, definitely agree with that. I guess there is a possibility that the character gets a lot of grief from some of the others, but it's hard to define the character and relationships of this crew from what we have seen.
Mostly, I guess, I'm excited by the quality and thought put into everything we have seen so far, with my biggest hurdle always being the composites and movement of anything CGI. With that pretty much settled in my mind, I'm optimistic, and can manage through a lot of the small stuff.
With story, it's always character motivation that pulls me out of a film. I don't care where a story goes as long as it has a reason to go there, as long as the characters have reason to do what they do. Just want a thoughtful film, and I'm thinking that may be the case.
Hope so. Can't wait. Feel like I've been waiting forever for this type of SF film.

HAHAHA
I know, right? Benedict Wong should be an interesting benchmark too because in Sunshine he was a crater-face. In fact, that's what I loved about that movie, all the actors had very little makeup. You could see people with their pale skin and droopy eyes. Y'know like real astronauts.
I fear Ridley is neglecting this immersive aspect. I HATE that Bold and the Beautiful look. It's impossible to associate with these people. Especially the scarf-wearers!
