James Cameron Wants to Direct "Prometheus" Sequel
Posted: April 1st, 2012 by WorstPreviews.com Staff
During the premiere of "Titanic 3D," director James Cameron was asked about Ridley Scott returning to the "Alien" franchise and whether he plans to see "Prometheus."
"I'll be first in line for Ridley's new film," he said. "The idea of Ridley coming back and doing another 'Alien' film is every fan's dream. And I was a fan of the first film so much that I wanted to do the second film just as a kind of a fanboy."
Since Cameron directed the "Alien" follow-up, called "Aliens," he was asked if he has any interest in helming a sequel to "Prometheus." "It's funny because when Fox first approached Ridley to make another 'Alien,' he was more interested in working on something original rather than returning to his old work," he explained. "At the time I was still working on 'Avatar.' Ridley came to me and he saw what I was doing and the ideas I was exploring. We sat down and talked about 'Alien' and saw that there's big ideas hidden in these stories. Where do we come from? What does it mean to be human? This was something that Ridley saw as original and something he wanted to be a part of."
Cameron continued: "I'm not sure if Ridley changed his mind, because the movie turned out fantastic, but it was during those early talks when he brought up the idea of me stepping in to direct a follow-up. This is why there's a gap of a few years between 'Prometheus' and the original 'Alien.' That gap is meant for me to answer all the questions raised in 'Prometheus.'"
When asked if that means he would want to direct 'Prometheus 2,' Cameron replied: "We'll see. Right now I'm working on 'Avatar 2,' so if Fox wants to wait... we'll see what happens."

MemberOvomorphApr-01-2012 9:22 AMCan't find this other article, but it's already a done deal. Cameron is directing the sequel, it's called Prometheus's.

MemberOvomorphApr-01-2012 9:30 AMI dont think he wrecked it.
It pretty massive to say he did, since the best part of the Alien Franchise and extended universe is based off that movie and not the original. you can tie both films into each other very well if you think about it enough. There's nothing to say that Aliens wasn't the logical evolution of the first film, with the influx of human DNA to the Xeno gene pool, as i have stated else where on the forums.
The first Alien movie just the first stage in what came out to be amazing set of stories (apart from resurrection - step to far in my eyes) and who is to say what happens to a Xeno when its mixed with different DNA. look at the AvP games and the comics, Colonial Marines comic (and the the new game which is freaking AWESOME btw) and the novels from the universe
If anything, Prometheus has the potential to completely destroy everything that has been written, which you could take as a reboot to SRS original vision of the movies. so before you go planning on-line petitions etc against Cameron, let this movie play out, and see where it takes us, because no one know for sure that this is going to be about the Alien we all know and hide under our covers at night from.

MemberOvomorphApr-01-2012 1:27 PMWhy does everyone here feel Cameron ruined the franchise? What were they going to do, make 4 movies about 1 Alien hiding in a corner hunting everyone down?
Aliens was one of the best sequels ever made and really spawned the mythology of the Alien life cycle. The only thing that ruined the franchise was Fox with the debacle that occurred around Alien 3 and the subsequent poor movies and money making platforms that followed.

MemberOvomorphApr-01-2012 3:09 PMFolks, please stop with the April Fools jokes. Once is enough. James Cameron is a god among directors. He gave the Alien franchise new life! If anybody wrecked the franchise, it would have to be the guy who directed Alien: Resurrection.

MemberOvomorphApr-01-2012 9:19 PMI agree with the anti-Cameron's here!!
Aliens is a well made & entertaining action movie but it's no "Alien".
If there's a Pt2, let Scott do it!!

MemberOvomorphApr-01-2012 9:48 PM@hicksandhudson......."What were they going to do, make 4 movies about 1 Alien hiding in a corner hunting everyone down?" ...Obviously not or else we wouldn't be anticipating 'Prometheus' which Scott always seems to have had some bits and pieces of rattling around in his brain. For example:
This is Ridley in Filmophobia about how he's always looked back at 'Alien'...
"Yeah, so there you have that. I was always amazed that, I mean, I’ve only done two science-fictions, but I was always amazed that no one asked who the hell the Space Jockey was. He wasn’t even called the Space Jockey. During the film they started to call it the Space Jockey. I don’t know who started that one off. I always thought it was amazing that no one ever asked who he was, and why was he there? What was all that about? I sat thinking about this for a while and thought, well, there’s a story! And the other four [films] missed it! So, here it is....I think one of the reasons why I’ve never gone back to science-fiction, even though I’ve often noodled around, thought about it, looked for story, looked for material, is that there’s a nice purity to the original Alien. It’s fairly pure. And this one does actually raise all kinds of other questions, because if someone could, a being, could be as monstrously clever to create something like we experienced in the very first one – I always figured it’s a weapon, and I always figured that [the ship in the first Alien] was a carrier of weapons. Therefore, who is that, inside that suit? That wasn’t a skeleton, that was a suit. And if you open up the suit, what do you get inside it? And why were they going, where were they going?"
The recent article in EMPIRE:
"[I've wanted to revisit it for] years! Years, years, years," he stresses, of Alien's space traveller subplot. "I always wondered when they did [Aliens] 2,3 and 4 why they hadn't touched upon that, instead of evolving into some other fantastic story. They missed the biggest question of them all: who's the big guy? And where were they going? And with what? Why that cargo? There's all kinds of questions."
There are always other possibilities for a good storyteller to take things in a direction no one expects....and like so many have said....Cameron's film comes off as an OBVIOUS next step as opposed to what it could have been and is likely to be in June. Well...we had one alien in 'Alien', so.....let's just throw a couple dozen more at the audience and call it 'Aliens'......and considering that 'Aliens' follows the same basic plot structure as 'Alien', RIGHT DOWN TO ITS CLIMAX. then maybe we can all step back and accept that maybe...MAYBE...Cameron could have approached it differently......
