Are we being too Literal

I enjoy all the plot ideas here but think we are being too literal with some of the things we see in the trailers. For example, a king has his reign and then he dies doesn’t mean we’ll encounter a king. It could be a referral to a species being dominant one day and history the next. The phrase is like saying every dog has his day, or 15 minutes of fame. Because the movie is called Prometheus doesn’t mean that it’s based on ancient Greek mythology any more than Red Dwarf features small red people. Also, RS has gone to great lengths to distance himself from Aliens 3 and 4 because of their silly plot lines, even so far as to have them ruled non cannon. I would be surprised if after declaring a movie about alien cloning (ie resurrection) as fan fiction if he goes down the route of time travel, ancient atlanteans, Weyland being an SJ, androids evolving in to xenos etc. I’m not dissing the theories that are posted as they make great reading but I think they are wide of the mark. I think the movie will be set within believable realistic parameters that all audiences, particular the older generation like me who grew up with the film will believe and not on a way out there sci-fi premise. Having said that, with my luck the I will be completely wrong and the film will be about an ancient time travelling xenomorph from Atlantis called Prometheus who becomes lost in time following a time travel experiment, temporarily taking the places of other people to put right what once went wrong and hoping that each leap will be the leap home.

This is the same Derelict and planet (Archeron/LV-426) from Alien/Aliens, why confuse matters by having the ship crash, take-off and then crash again on the next planet. That's bad narrative.

FreezeHim, The elements in the cave they explore are dangerous to us, right? The SJs have to be aware they are a danger to other life forms. Why not spread them all over the planet from the sky. It's like an airstrike before sending in the soldiers to round up the survivors and take over the territory. The Xenos being their troops. The only thing is, how are the SJs are going to deal with all those xenos running loose on the planet once their mission is accomplished?

Has anyone thought about Prometheus as being a special homage to the great late Dan O'Bannon? He died recently after battling Crohn's disease for thirty years, anyone brave enough to look it up, I only warn you it will be more frightening than anything you've seen in the Alien movies...let's say he suffered something resembling the fate of Prometheus in a bitterly ironic way: substitute guts for liver, remove the eagle, and you're almost there. I have long been asking myself if it was Crohn's that inspired Dan for the chestburster idea, in addition to Giger's art. Now there's something truly frightening. Although totally irrational (and maybe also too literal),this has been one of chief reasons why I think mythology will play a key role in the movie. And I want a Dan O'Bannon homage movie to be nothing short of a masterpiece! If anyone deserves it, he does.

@ Want to see - Yeah, I thought the same thing too about the running loose xenos once the mission is accomplished. Think about it though, I remember reading that Giger said the xenos had a very short life span...like 3 days? So that would be perfect. They do their job(kill the humans) and die shortly after.

Freeze, "They do their job(kill the humans) and die shortly after." Okay, man. Well then there you go. We got a working theory. Then I guess I'll have to assume that in 'Aliens' Ripley and the marines didn't know their life span was so short. They could have just waited until they all died?....

@ Wirrn - I have a friend whom has Crohns disease, he's had it all his life, as did O'Bannon. While it isn't curable it is treatable with medication. @ WTSPN - Once all suitable host have been used up the Xenomorphs will die leaving behind their eggs. SJ's come down, collect the eggs, eliminate the skeletons and hives of the Xenomorphs (think blue liquid in AVPR or War of the Worlds (Book not films) black fog). The Derelict in Prometheus/Alien is filled with said cargo of eggs.

Well, then maybe if the colonial marines had waited, all they would have had left to wrestle with are a bunch of eggs....

If the short life span thing is true, it has never been stated in the films. The Xenomorph's would eventually die out, after how long we simply don't know.

Cameron sort of threw a monkey wrench into Gigers 4 day life cycle theory in that by the time Ripley and the marines arrive at LV426 after their FTL cryosleep, NEWT has been surviving virtually alone for something like 2 weeks.

@CanadaPhil Damn did I ever love that idea with the Xeno anthill, found it terrifying when I first read it, also....This IMO is one of the single most fun and "hardly ever seen" openings to any film I have ever. AuntieXeno @whydon't: Just FYI, it was "4 days". @Wirm: Both Snorky & I are Huge O'Bannon Fans/Respecters. IF not for DAN more than anybody else...None of us are even here right now!!!

Agreed CanadaPhil, I always thought that 4 day's was too short. I imagine the Xenomorphs probably have a decent lifespan to give them time to do their thing.

Exactly Sparky... Dan O'Bannon and H R Giger are the Sci-Fi Horror equivalent of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, or James Cameron and Stan Winston.

Spart... They might just yet pull the wool over everyones eyes!! Afterall, the scan of the "mountain" sure as hell looks like a HIVE to me!! What is wrong with that idea anyway? That the "REAL Xeno" were meant as nothing more than WORKER ANTS!! a simple means to an end. They dig, chew the natural local minerals, and adapt the terrain to something new via their secretions and apriation..droppings even!!... But, something unforseen happens making them into NOT what the "overlords" intended. Personally, I find the tarantuala sized ant idea way more pallatable. The idea of something evolving into something entirely different and terrifying is what this is supposed to be all about isnt it?

There's still something in 'Aliens' that could give us an angle on this life cycle deal and keep Cameron's movie sound. You remember that when they flamed that women who had a baby xeno burst from her chest, the noise woke the adults up. Perhaps by going into some sort of hybernation sleep, they can extend their own lives.

Like in Blazing Saddles, we would say at that point someone could have been giving a Pep Talk To The Xenomorph's Before they would go out on a Xenomorph Terra-Forming Run and maybe even Harvey Korman himself...ending with that age old inspirational and now world famous movie quote phrase... The "temple" is based upon Harkonnen Castle (spotted by your truly back in November/December) and Gigers description of the workings of Harkonnen Castle (originally intended for Dune) is not too dis-similar to how the Xenomorph's construct their hives, which co-incidently, probably look like what Giger designed for the Pyramid in Alien (essentially a large egg).

In fiction, canon is the conceptual material accepted as "official" in a fictional universe's fan base. It is often contrasted with, or used as the basis for, works of fan fiction, which are not considered canonical. Wikipedia Without a proper name for the creature, fans adopted the name the crew had used for it during production, ‘Space Jockey’. It was only later, in canon books and video games, that we learn the race is called ‘Pilot’ - or ‘Mala’kak’ in their own language. None of them appeared in any other films from the series http://www.tgdaily.com/entertainment/60322-ridley-scott-talks-alien-prometheus Mala'kaks, also known as "Space Jockeys" or "Pilots" (Latin: Mundus gubernavi, meaning "Universal Pilot"), are an elusive race of large, sapient, extraterrestrial lifeforms

@CanadaPhil fanbloddytastic post man, I agree with everything you said @Snorky, I wish there was some small way we could pay homage t that man? I Imagine he would have been so happy, no...ABSOLUTELY THRILLED with what is happening now. @EVERYBODYELSE SOME KIND OF TIE IN TO THE "MURDEROUS THEIF" however small, has t be part of this film IMO...because for no other reason than Ridley Scott would Not give up the One chance he may have before he is gone to bring that thing back into the fold. His and O'Bannon's and Gigers most magnificent creation. Maybe the greatest Movie Monster of all time, which never would have occurred if not for that Damn Beach Ball of O'Bannon's and Ridley Scott's Love of Giger's Book Of paintings... "Necronomicon!!!

@ Snorky ohhhhhhhhh k.... as much as I'm obsessed with ALIEN and like Dan O'Bannon, Dan (rest in peace) is not the equivalent of Stan Lee. Stan Lee is credited with the creation of much of Marvel's current super heroes including Spidey, X-Men, and the Fantastic Four just to name a few. Stan has also written countless stories over the years and has helped produced shows and movies. Dan wrote the original screenplay for ALIEN which was then altered by the producers and by Ridley making it significantly better. The only other significant credits he has according to IMDB are partial credits for the screen plays of Total Recall and Screamers. (Both movies based on Phillip K Dick stories). Dan helped to start a world-renown movie franchise which is an incredible accomplishment. But as a comparison...I think Stan has done a bit more.

@snorkelbottom Have you seen the new stills? One appears to show a 3D scan of one of the "Harkonnen Castle" structures (btw, great spotting - I must have pored over Giger's Harkonnen castle designs hunderds of times, yet totally failed to see them in the trailer before u pointed it out), on the Prometheus bridge. It appears to show that most of the structure is filled in, with several dome-like chambers in the lower part, and what appears to be a staircase or corridor spiralling upward while getting narrower (or so it seems). This seems to sufggest a tomb, and one vaguely similar in internal structure to the insides of Egyptian pyramids. Do look it up - you may detect more stuff there than I did, and I'd like to hear it!

Thanks Sparty. By the way, wasn't trying to be argumentative, just giving some credit to Lee. I got the chance to meet him in person last year. Such a nice guy! Wish i could have met Dan too :( ... And I gotta give credit to Snorky on the Harkonnen Castle. When he first mentioned it last year I saw what he was referring to in the trailer...but I thought he was reaching at best. Glad he proved me wrong on that one! Its good to see more Giger-inspired work on film.

@draekus We're not running a marathon here. I myself would always prefer Dan O'Bannon to Stan Lee - I did not like the Spidey movies all that much, X-Men were good only because of Singer and Ratner, and the Fantastic Four was simply lame, apart from the naked (Yeah!) yet invisible (Ach!) Jessica Alba. But my opinion is just my opinion, I am neither more or less right or wrong than you are in your claims. I don't think this kind of thing is quantifiable, let alone comparable. Is Stan or Dan better? Who cares? As the Robin Williams character says in Dead Poets' Society after having presented then riduculed a way of presumable measuring the quality of poems quantitatively. "I like Byron, I'd give him a forty-two, but I can't dance to him". My point exactly.

Thank you TheNextLV426. I really enjoy reading all the theories, even the ones I don't agree with. But you spoke my mind. I was thinking that after watching the film it will be interesting to read back on these posts. Then again, there will probably be so much more new stuff to discuss and speculate about.

I agree, DUNE is AWFUL.. I mean, even for a die-hard sci-fi fan, it is very difficult to follow along. It is very poorly edited. The problem with Dune is that the theatrical release (which is probably the only version most have seen) is butchered. Many may not remember, but there was a special TV version (YES! TV version!!) Dune in 88/89ish?? that was 189 minutes!! and that one made so much more sense. I saw that once back in the day.. I remember it be advertised as a major TV event. I also saw it 1 other time since then as a Sci-Fi channel (I think?) repeat several years ago. That version I think is quite good and fills in many things which cause headscratcher moments in the THEATRICAL verison which is only a PG rated 137 minute movie. The trouble is, I believe the 137 minute release is the ONLY one regarded as "official" and thats what you get when you want to buy Dune on DVD.

I have that version Phil, here in the US a couple years ago they released a dual sided disc, one side was the theatrical cut and the other was the TV version which I prefer.
