There are no 'ampules' in the Prometheus trailer

MemberOvomorphApril 14, 20124269 Views49 RepliesI don't know who on this forum started using the word "ampule" to describe the urn-like canisters (or any other containment vessel seen in the movie Prometheus), but it's got to stop because it's as annoying as it is ignorant. Clearly this has gone viral because many are following the lead lemming off the cliff.
The word "ampule' has a very specific meaning. An ampule is a small, hermetically-sealed vial having a rubber lid through which a hypodermic needle is inserted for the purpose of drawing up liquid contents for subsequent injection. It is not a general term to describe any container.
There are no ampules shown anywhere at anytime during the Prometheus trailer. The canisters seen in the temple are very, very far away in size, structure, and function from what an "ampule" actually is.

Technically, an ampule is a completely closed glass container.
What you're describing--with the rubber seal on the top--is a "vial."

This is an ampule:

The key feature is that the top is actually part of the bottom. That is, the top is actually broken off before you can access the contents.
If the term originated with Ridley Scott and we assume that he knows what an ampule is, perhaps these vessels share this feature--perhaps they are hermetically sealed and must be broken to access their contents. But an ampule is typically only big enough to hold about 1-3 mLs of volume so it's rather odd to refer to something orders magnitude larger using this term.
People who are taking this personally are way off base. I mean no offense to anyone.

@Jacques Strappe ...
Mate ... it's Science 'bloody' Fiction ... it's NOT based on FACT ... it doesn't have to be ... plus this is an ALIEN world we're dealing with ... what's to say their AMPULES are not different? ...
You're not offending anyone ... and we're not taking it personally ... you're just rubbing some up the wrong way ... that's all ...

I admire your attention to rational precision.
However, as a result of that self-same quality, you may find it is part of your destiny to be misunderstood - if you haven't found it the case, already.
@Gem]n[
Without prejudice to you, you have moved me to point out that, on the contrary, good Science Fiction is, very much, based in Fact - and it is, from that basis, that it looks toward Fantasy.
It is that firm basis, in Fact, that informs our acceptance of it's overall plausibility.

2,734,568 Silent Hill fans know what an ampoule is. Ridley Scott never played Silent Hill.

The "Ampule" are probably contained IN the protective canisters/urns, in any case Ridley was the one who started calling the place "the ampule room".
"An ampoule (also ampul or ampulla) is a small sealed vial which is used to contain and preserve a sample, usually a solid or liquid. Ampoules are commonly made of glass, although plastic ampoules do exist.
Modern ampoules are most commonly used to contain pharmaceuticals and chemicals that must be protected from air and contaminants. They are hermetically sealed by melting the thin top with an open flame, and usually opened by snapping off the neck."
Here is a real ampoule, filled with a substance called Cesium:
Here is David8, pulling what looks like 4 connected "ampoule" out of the protective urn:
As far as size goes here is another one containing Cesium and it is huge:

Hopefully this will lay this argument to rest.

As you can see from the picture's caption, it was TWENTIETH CENTURY FOX who started using the word "ampule" in one of the very first official promo pics they released for Prometheus.
If you want to quibble over semantics, maybe you should write the studio a letter. Besides, we still don't know that the urns in the "ampule room" aren't full of, you know ... ampules.
Here's the URL if you want to check out a bigger, more easily readable version of the picture.

@Jacques Strappe:
The term "ampule" was first used by Ridley/Fox when describing the early stills from the film which were released late last year (referring to the one particular interior shot as the "Ampule Room."
It did not originate on this forum.
(EDIT: Whoops, didn't see the post right above mine - nvm)

@allinamberclad ...
I do agree with you on that ... it also works the other way around too, as in science fiction can become fact ... that's the stuff I like ... I don't mind being told I'm wrong ... that's how I learn ;) ... anyhow ... no real harm done here ...

Words change meaning over time! We can call them Alien condoms,because it just might mean that a century from know,

Just saying this again for fun...and I think it applies...again...
The World Famous Merriam Webster Company and it's Dictionary division define the word as follows...
Ampule
Variants of AMPULE
am·pule or am·poule also am·pul
1: a hermetically sealed small bulbous glass vessel that is used to hold a solution for especially hypodermic injection
2: a vial resembling an ampule

@Gem]n[
Yes. Without question: you are correct in your second statement.
From their very beginnings, Fiction has influenced Science.
As a direct result, Fantasy, given time, shows the strong tendency to become Fact.

Well these things look like Urns.
They do not look like Eggs, or Ampules if we are being specific.
But a Urn is usually used to contain the ashes or dead remains of a Person/Organism.
A Egg is basically a Organism that becomes a embryo when it is fertilised.
A Ampule is used to contain a Liquid Sample of some kind.
They could all tie in together.
These Urns/Canisters contain the building blocks to create/start life and not contain the remains of what was once life.
They may contain a Sample of a Substance like a Ampule, but a Substance that when fertilised or bonded with DNA will then go on to create life.
So they indeed cary elements of all 3.

@Dave ...
Urns proper description & use makes sense ...
Ok then ... say they are urns contain lots of different DEAD species? ... but Weyland has Cloning technology and so re-produces those dead species? ... hence an already killed of Xeno type as one possibility? ... Jurasic Park if you will? ... their universe would once again rock with their versions of 'Dinosaurs' (used loosley), so to speak? ... that I could handle ... :) ...

While it appears to be troll fire..I guess i'll feed it with a little fact and picture.
Maybe RS notated them as ampules because they are like other contaminant ampules or containers

When the Jar part is opened there is a ampule type object that is removed from the jar.
You can see the tips that almost resemble a classic single-dose ampule.

I think we can all agree to disagree here.. So i am taking the reigns and officially changing the name to JIZZ JAR.
All hail JIZZ JAR
Please excuse my grammar .. for that is the way I use it
