MemberOvomorphApr-16-2012 1:26 PMThis will probably be the last one of these for a while since our upcoming Summer Box Office preview should cover a lot of ground, but guess what, kids? This time, you get not one but two long distance box office projections in one as we look at the two movies opening on June 8, very different movies, both which have the potential to be huge blockbusters reaching different audiences.
Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa grossing just over $60 million over three days on its way to $180 million
What are your thoughts? Could this Affect Prometheus Talking about money ?

MemberOvomorphApr-16-2012 1:46 PMI know a lot of people who NEVER go to the theater that are showing up for Prometheus.
The last film I saw in a theater was "Scott Pilgram". before hat it was "Watchmen". My roommate hasn't seen a movie in a theater since the third harry potter and she is going. My girlfriend and I have been dating for a year and a half and we still haven't seen a movie. I was at a party after a gig on Saturday and everyone was discussing it. These are people who go see a mainstream movie every 5 years.
I've never even heard of the escape movies. i am the market that fox wants, the fan that comes out of the woodwork to go to a theater.
So yeah, I think the crowd for Prometheus will look pretty different. Lots more people going who are home body geeks or more involved in other art forms then cinema. And you can attribute all that to Ridley Scott. Anyone else directing and all these people wouldn't give a shit.

MemberOvomorphApr-16-2012 3:34 PMHonestly, I think Madagascar will win the box office. Probably by a significant amount. CGI kiddie movies are a huge box office draw. Followed by summer block busters based on teen books/comic books and rated PG-13.
That's not to say movies like Prometheus won't make a significant revenue. It just won't compare to Madagascar, TDKR, Hunger Games, ETC.
The truly sad/devastating part is...Prometheus would make significantly less if it was rated "R". Hence why it will likely be rated PG-13. (If you don't believe me look at the top grossing films of all time. I think there's only one on the list that was rated "R".)
While I'm on that topic...(and I'll try not to go on a rant for TOO long). I hate the fact that rated "R" movies always seem to do worse at the theater when compared to those rated PG-13/PG/G. In my circle of friends, (and this is only in my unique experience) I'm the only avid movie-goer. I've taken note of my friends' theater-attending habits and have noticed that they NEVER go see rated "R" movies in the actual theater/cinema. Of my friends that are married/have kids, all go to the theater ONLY to take their kids. (They NEVER have date nights to the movies to see films THEY want to watch.) My other friends (single/not married) only go to the theater to watch the epic block-busters, which all turn out to be rated PG-13.
For them, Movies/shows that contain what is considered rated "R" content is usually left for at-home viewing via rental or cable. (Again, this is just my experience....and sorry for the off-topic rant :)

MemberOvomorphApr-16-2012 4:01 PMI would say that Madagascar will almost definately beat out Prometheus - at the US box office anyway. It has Snow White And The Huntsmen for competition here in the UK for its opening on June 1st.
To respond to draekus, I am not sure it is that your friends dont want to see different kinds of movies, but with the world the way it is right now, going to the movies is an expensive proposition nowadays - most people stay home to watch a movie now - which is sad because you can never beat the full cinema experience!
If anything, when Prometheus opens, it will do well and that number one spot will be a close call - lets hope taste and quality win the day - I am sick of these Madagascar/Ice Age movies - but then they and Prometheus are made by FOX so its a win-win for them!!!

MemberOvomorphApr-16-2012 4:33 PMI hate to say it, but if Madagascar kills Prometheus at the box office in the US, it will be a disaster for Ridley Scott, knowing the way the US media is.
I dont know the inner workings of this thing, but something tells me one of the reasons they probably moved it to the first week of June from its original April-ish schedule was to try to slot it into a week or so with no other major national action type releases.
Now another problem (hopefully minor one) is that the week before ANOTHER Charlize Theron movie will premiere (SNOW WHITE & THE HUNTSMAN).. now that could be a negative for Scott in 2 ways.. That its a smash and its box office will spill over into the week of the Prometheus premiere, or it could completely flop with people then dissing Prometheus ahead of time as another Summer flop with Charlize Theron.
Who knows...
But Prometheus will be getting a HUGE North America wide release on THOUSANDS OF SCREENS and if it cant generate at least 100 million gross in its first few days like so called "SUMMER BLOCKBUSTERS" are now EXPECTED to achieve by the "mainstream media", it could be very bad for this film.
I think it needs to hit $200,000,000 gross JUST TO BARELY HIT BREAK EVEN statis and studios dont spend $150million plus on films just to barely break even.

MemberOvomorphApr-16-2012 4:46 PMI saw Moon at an art theater, and a Jodorowsky marathon. Oh, and I watched "The Beyond" at a midnight viewing. I don't include those because they don't belong with prometheus. Which is mainstream as it gets. You have to compare it to other mainstream films and well, there hasn't been a good mainstream scifi movie in 15 years.
yes that includes inception. Such a bloated piece of shit. Hell, I can't remember the last good big budget scifi movie. I really can't....
I've said it a few time, I think Prometheus will tank. I think internationally it will barely make back it's money, and if we include ad costs it will probably lose till it is on video.

MemberOvomorphApr-16-2012 5:08 PMI don't think Prometheus will break the 100 million mark it's first weekend. In my opinion we'll be lucky if it hits 70 million.
@RobG
I understand the "situation" of the world right now when it comes to finances. But in the case of my friends, trust me that doesn't factor in. They just choose alternate luxuries over going to the theater to watch a movie they (not their kids) like. They just rent the movies they're interested in.

MemberOvomorphApr-16-2012 8:08 PMshane, I'm one of those...
I have a FULL private theater...and I mean FULL. I don't go see anything, because the BEST theaters around aren't even close to what I can provide...
That said, I'm going to Prometheus, in addition to our entire clan, and we'll probably go over and over...
This is the most anticipated film I can remember since the Star Wars/Alien era...

MemberOvomorphApr-17-2012 2:47 AMI'll see it as soon as I can. I'll probably dump some major cash to get in on this ride.
Madagascar 3 will be a fun movie. However, I remember at the age of 11, we kids "knew" that the adult Alien movie would be cool, and we worked hard to convince the parents that it was a nice alien movie. We didn't care about seeing a kiddie movie. If our parents were more up to speed, we would have been left to the Madagascar equivalent.
Based on my experience, kids will be getting all creative to get in to see this movie. I am hoping the adults and creative kids push Prometheus to the top.
