DAVID's NUMBER 8 LINKED TO CREATION

Could represent the noble eight fold path of Buddha, where each element of the path is symbolized by the 8 spokes of the Dharma wheel, lol damn it Lindelof!!!

What about it just being a coincidence? The only way to confirm that would be through an interview from someone; it would bring the movie to a halt to have to explain that one.

I doubt this is a coincidence, and doubt it would be explained (in the film). I think/hope there might be a lot of symbolism and references left to further analyze after this movie comes out. And even though there may not even be a reference to Davids model # in the film, I still think is is intentional.

Also I was thinking 8 might represent infinity, as in an infinite cycle of new life creating new life...

After watching David's ad just now, i can really imagin him changing into a biomechanical nightmare. It has been suggested here before, i didn't think much of it then. Now I do.

I'm still a little tempted by the time travel idea - The SJ ship can transport it's pilot through time. David is the SJ & the waterfall scene is David becoming the first proto-Human after being transported back to prime ordeal Earth. The paradox is the David, an android, is actually responsible for the creation of Human kind on Earth!! Crazy, I know. But with Lindelof on writing duties I think ANYTHING is possible :-(

There are other siginificant meanings for the number 8 that may be the reason for David having that number. I've had a look on the www and here are what I believe are the best ones: in Revelations, the Anti Christ is the 8th King. In Chinese mythology there are 8 immortals whose power can bestow life. In Egyptian mythology, there were 8 deities collectively known as the Ogdoad, who were responsible for creation. In Numerology, 8 can be both the number of building and destruction. The 8th sign of the zodiac is Scorpio. In Greek mythology, Scorpio is associated with Orion. Orion boasted to Atermis that he would kill every animal on earth, so Atermis sent a scorpion to battle Orion, and the scorpion won. All have some relevance to what we think may happen in the film and David's role...it's whether he's benevolent or malevolent!

I found the "unethical" bit along with the "unecessary suffering" line in respone to the question what whats you sad, very telling in the matter of fact way the words were delivered.

I think it's only 8 because that's what comes after 7.

Don't forget that his name (David) is very Biblical as well. In the viral video, he says that he ''can carry out orders that his human counterparts may find distressing...or unethical'' (the camera zooms in significantly on the ''unethical''). In the background, we see two mechanical skulls, at the same time symbolizing death and referring to the head of the Space Jokey, which he presumably takes in for examination. David is also queer - not gay, but ambisexual, like the David Bowie character in ''The Man Who Fell on Earth'''. And it's all shot in very symmetrical compositions reminiscent of Kubrick; so that it seems like David is in between, at the cross-section of polar extremes. This would all suggest that at some point he crosses the line between life and death, morality and immorality, human and alien... etc If it doesn't literally mean that he is the proverbial Prometheus, then it certainly means (I think) that he sets humanity in motion as regards the next step in evolution or devolution. I doubt it will be only good or only bad: more like a mix of the two, which is at once more disturbing, and more interesting.

8 does come after 7, but then why could the movie not have him based on David 5, David 6 why David 8? Someone who i have spoken too, who also posted a few links to concept work that he said is what the Prometheus Creatures will be based on. Had told me that David gets transformed, he also said he saw Fassbender with no Hair. Now the guy could be talking BS! But David in the Viral Video does have a shaved head at the begining. And the one Jockey Scene the Shaw one (or as we assume) certainly does not look 9ft tall. Maybe the Bald Guy in the Water Fall scene could indeed be David as he becomes a new lifeform, maybe the qoute from Big Things come from Small Beginings? We just dont know for sure, Ridley hinted at two synthetic life forms, maybe he does not mean Two Seperate Andriods and thus Vickers is the Red Herring. Maybe it could mean that David becoming some other life form? It would fit in with David having to shave his head just for the begining of the Viral Video, maybe it was shaved fore more than that reason?

@dejan The androids are also named alphabetically Ash, Bishop, Cal and now David. Following this pattern E would be next.

yeah its strange that ridley would not commit to a definite there are 2 androids and would only say at the comic con web link there could be two . Was he deliberately being vague to keep the movies plot hidden or was there a play on the notion and there may be two of the same models or possibly as Big Dave suggests some kind of transformation going on. ?

Speaking of the Buddha, in the "Happy Birthday David" viral video we do see David8 sitting with his shoes off in a meditative position at the end. Also, wasn't it said that God's 8th creation was man, in his likeness??

Alreredstate, you already see 2 Davids in the viral video (he's a serial product). But I think the doubling/splitting is very important as it points to the possibility of David's ''Doppelganger'' (dark double), which we're seeing I think on the Giger mural as well. I would be very disappointed if PROMETHEUS made some banal point like ''we mustn't tinker with technology''. We're already tinkering with technology, there's no way back. The question is how can we use technology to better ourelves, not how we can get rid of technology and go back to some primitive state. It would also be disappointing if the standard Christian narrative was reinstated through the story. But I think Scott is too forward-thinking a director, to take such a conventional turn. You can tell in the brilliant way he handles the intricate production design.

I have seen no confirmation the mural is david and i was following Big Daves notion Of transformation . Yes there are hundreds of david's in theory as there are ash, bishops, and cal's but apart from multiple versions of david's model we were speculating if there would be a reveal of an unknown android model.

@alteredstate.; I think, though not 100% sure, that there is no other replica of Annalee Call, she is unique as were all the autons. (Autons were "second generation" synthetics (machines manufactured by machines) created to revitalize the faltering synthetics industry of the 24th century. The plan backfired when the autons rebelled against their human masters in a bloody event known as "The Recall".) I always thought it odd no one noticed Ash was a robot, given the serial nature of the line, must have been that he was new. Thanks for that svanya thats news to me then that would also suggest that the android names are not in alphabetical order i presume if analee is the androids name.? i have little knowledge of what is and isn't canon i'm afraid i just know the films .

It strikes to me as odd, why is the Davids model number 8 displayed upside down in both viral videos about him?
