The David8 as a

MemberOvomorphApril 18, 20121070 Views25 RepliesThe concept Weyland Corp is like Apple and makes "androids to deliver" is stupid. It always felt like Weyland Corp was a defence contractor like Lockheed or BAE not a company selling "consumer androids." Just very very stupid and I hate to say it; AVP-like in delivery.
And is anyone else totally unconvinced by the stupid, over dramatic TED talk? In a studium of people? Weyland Corp is meant to be an unforgiving, nasty military contractor who operates behind the scences not Apple or Microsoft selling products to people like me and you.
It felt like Ash and Bishop were expensive peices of military hardware not talking ipads
Anyone else feeling this silly vibe?
And for the record I love alien 1-3 and I love science fiction although other than 2001, alien(s) and Solaris almost EVERYTHING that is released falls so short of the bar of realistic sci-fi that it's painful to watch. I AM DESPERATE FOR PROMETHEUS TO BE GOOD.
Anyway any thoughts on the above?

I do see what you're saying - if you watch the old General Electric cartoon promos from the 1940s you would never know they are the same company that makes parts for warheads in 2012. So yes I can agree with that, but for me, and I just wondered if there were any like minded fans out there, its a bit disappointing David is an ipad and not the latest peice of top secret miltary hardware.
And thats what I mean about it being silly, (i do struggle to articulate myself), its just a bit silly that one of us with enough money in this universe, can buy a David or an Ash or a Bishop - I like to think that Bishop costs the price of a dropship or a warhead and is something you would only see in inner circles of the miltary or the company if you like. If you see what I mean, its a bit "silly" and childish that "in the future we can buy robots" and that people will go to a stadium to watch a company CEO give a speech. Its just a bit silly to me.

I'm not sure it's tailored to consumers directly, the viral video of David 8, is tailored more to other corporations. It's more of a video type portfolio that gives an insight to the new and improved David 8 model. Something on a professional level. Perhaps, you might see it on business type channel, say CNN or Fox News. Example, compare those commercials to other stations(mainstream), say ABC or KTLA, that being in Southern California. Again, I view it as business to business promo commercialvideo and seems to fit that business model, to me anyway.

@40mercuy - I own 2 business' and I dont think I should be able to afford an android even if i could.
I just thought the synthetics were something that was known about but not something you would see in the shops.
April 18, 2012
"you didnt tell me there was a synthetic on board"
But the prometheus universe is setting up the idea that synthetics are every where. I dunno, I want to LOVE this film, but it just feels childish like a computer game with every passing viral or press release.

Ok, you know Johnson & Johnson right? Sweet, family oriented company?? Well dig deeper and after you sift through all that baby powder you will find some disturbing stuff, like them doing experimental vaccines. My point is, money makes the world go round and every buisness eventually gets up something military based.
~Look at the Johnson & Johnson official site, so happy and sweet:

~Now look at some stuff they are doing with the military:

I don't think it's stupid. I think it's perfectly rational, given the point in the Weyland history that we're discussing - ie: long before the era you are discussing.
I don't see what is so hard about imagining a time before Weyland became what you describe, even if your description is correct?
For someone who claims to appreciate Science Fiction, your comments seem to come from a place of quite rigid preconception and, in that context, I'm finding what you've said very, very hard to understand.
Your point on the TED is affected by the same, apparently, rigid preconception that affects your first...
Personally, I don't find anything "silly" about it..it seems a fairly reasonable - and plausible - backward projection: Weyland Industries is not yet Weyland-Yutani.
Corporations change.
It's actually quite simple.

You own two businesses, but of what magnitude? Are you dealing with multi millions, billions? Are you a multi-national? That's the kind of clientele this product is aimed at. Toyota, Waltons, Microsoft, etc.

i dont agree ...now we feel a connection with david , i think the first time we will see him in the movie we will smile ...like someone we already know , an old friend ...and you are right the david viral is not cold ..is super cold !!!
And peter weyland ?? How one cant love this bag full of arrogance ?? Ive watched both videos many times and never get bored ...
i think you are overreacting a bit ... ( Peter Weyland TM )

@xFTx
I think I understand you a little bit better. You seem to have exactly understood what is being done, yet it still bothers you, somehow - I wonder why?
It may be disappointing to you that he is not, “top secret”, nor, “military” - but that really does not make him an, “iPad”?
He is an artificial human being, indistinguishable, from an actual human being?
Just think of it.
That is a step change in human ingenuity – and, by that token, a step change in our own evolution - and he is the first of his kind.
I would expect that to be played on, very heavily, in this Story...
And the Synthetics were never, de facto, “militarized” – this may something I am just not familiar with. If I am correct, why would you have that expectation?
I have a feeling you, in particular, will really enjoy this movie a lot - if you only set one or two of the things you have decided should be the case, aside.

For me the David8 Viral could have been maybe in more of a documentary style (and I dont mean shaky camera!!) about the technology tat goes into a David robot or something like that.
"Real" is a word in movies that carries an awful lot of hex BUT in the case of Prometheus I was hoping for that cold, reality done so well in alien. The virals to me just come across as very very silly.
April 18, 2012
I complety agree about General Electric - that is the sort of all encompassing company I imaged Weyland to be BUT just not doing adverts for artifical people. That Viral just kills it for me. Personally. To me they just shouldnt have a front that sells to the end user - and especially not in such a camp video.
PSlock - any thoughts on the TED talk? I just felt it was awful.

Weyland Yutani is not a military contractor, they are a large corporate entity with fingers in many different pies, so to speak. It is established in the Alien canon that the company is involved with many different things, from consumer electronics, all the way to mining and military development. It is implied that androids are now sort of part of how humanity does business and work, they are not military hardware in a strict sense.
Clearly, at some point, the company decides it is best to do extremely unethical things like sending people to be purposefully infected and killed by xenomorphs simply to acquire them or learn about them, but I think it is very strongly implied they not solely a military company. I mean, for example, look at General Electrics. They manufacture parts and hardware that show up in almost everything electronic in our homes, but at the same time they help develop nuclear weapons and high-grade military hardware.

of course you have all the rights to have your opinion ..,, i can just say that i couldnt stop to giggle and smile watching the two viral videos ...and to me that is a total good sensation .

The commercial is intentional. It has that "Corporate" feel to it. Made to make the suits and the bean counters feel happy. If the reactions of David unnerved you they should. When the androids become so human you can't tell them from real humans, that's when they revolt.
The A2's always were a bit twitchy.
I showed my wife the commercial and the range of David's emotional expressions. She laughed and said you could barely tell which was which.
I told her wait till the upgrades.

I'm going to go waay out on a limb here, and predict that "Prometheus" is going to be very good.....possibly even another Ridley Scott sci-fi classic. This movie has an amazing cast, and a director who's proven that he "gets" sci-fi. We've seen how visually stunning it will be: the sets, costumes, art direction and production design are clearly top-shelf.........the only unknown quantity is the writing, and I have a hunch it's going to be a scary, creepy, disquieting squirm-in-your-seat rollercoaster ride, once things head south.
One of the reasons I have so few doubts left, is the quality of the marketing campaign, because it clearly illustrates that these characters have been fully thought through.
